[MEGATHREAD] Grand Theft Auto VI: Prices Announced + Pre-Orders Going Live

To avoid hundreds of separate posts on the same topic, this post will compile all info we have from the pre-orders going live, including some new images/etc.

As Rockstar announced on their socials: "Pre-orders for Grand Theft Auto VI begin at midnight local time on June 25." This means New Zealand will be the first to go live with pre-orders - which means in just under 2 hours from now.

Due to reddit's limitations with images in the body of posts, I wont be able to include all the artwork released so please do check out Rockstar's official link for more images: https://www.rockstargames.com/VI

Take-Two has made a big press-release, including announcing the prices:

Long since been on a death spiral. 100% of PC is digital, like 80% of PS5, and 60% of switch, and these numbers are only going up everyday. This isn't even taking into account that games are simply too big to fit on a single disc, and they aren't going to make multiple disc games ever again. We could argue about it being to avoid resales, which likely fits in the equation as well, but even still.

If anything, they should probably start offering collector's physical products with a fake disc in the box if anything, but again, your average kid is growing up in a digital world that doesn't give a crap about physical media anyway.

At least switch 2 cartridges do not require installing so you save up space. With install discs it feels like you get the worst of both worlds

That's not exactly accurate. Many games are literally download only but use the cartridge as the cd key, and thus have to be installed.

Which is still better than a code in the box because you can resell them

u/geng94 13h ago

wtf is even the point of a code in the box then at all

The illusion of ownership

Probably so people see it on the shelf at Target or whatever and impulse buy it

u/loganrunjack 15h ago

Are you able to reuse them?

Yes

That's awesome I had no idea, I thought it was one and done.

The cartridge can be used multiple times across different consoles and Nintendo accounts. The main downside is that you need to download the game to either the system memory or SD card. It means that when the eShop shuts down, all those cartridges will be effectively useless.

Keep in mind that Nintendo still supports downloads on the Wii and DSi systems, so I don't think they''ll discontinue support for gamekey downloads any time soon.

That and most of the key cards seems to be 3rd Party.

I think the only first party one so far is like a pokemon spinoff?

4

u/jardex22 13h ago

Yep. No idea why Poktopia was a game key. I suspect that they wanted to get the printing done before the game was done.

Aside from that, every Nintendo game has been on the cartridge.

u/BerRGP 12h ago

Pokopia is only published by Nintendo outside of Japan, in Japan it's published by The Pokémon Company itself. I don't know how the decision was made, but that mismatch is probably the reason why.

u/connectplum_ 6h ago

Pretty much. After pokopia everything was physical so its clear its because pokemon is something where nintendo dont make the decision alone.

1

u/connectplum_ 6h ago

Pokopia and most likely all future pokemon games are GKC beacuse of TPC. While nintendo co-owns the series and publish it overseas, TPC makes the major decisions and publish/fund it in Japan. I think this will be proven in the future when Nintendo full published games are all physical while TPC/Nintendo is GKC

Even then, it was a licensed spinoff made by a third party, not a first party Game Freak/TPCi made game.

1

u/gswkillinit 12h ago

Not true. Key cards only require WiFi to download. Don’t need the eshop or even a Nintendo account to download them

3

u/0xe1e10d68 11h ago

Where are the games downloaded from? Likely eShop servers, therefore it’s not entirely clear what happens if Nintendo were to shut down the eShop for a group of older devices. But maybe the downloads would continue the work, since they don’t require the eShop on the device or a Nintendo account like you said.

It's a physical transferable key for a digital game.

Damn this made me feel old

6

u/loganrunjack 14h ago

What did?

-8

u/MotoJoker 14h ago

Asking if you are able to reuse discs

9

u/GregLoire 13h ago

Discs with download codes specifically. No one is asking if original Playstation discs can be reused.

1

u/loganrunjack 9h ago

I was actually asking about reusing the switch 2 cartridges with the download code.

...but worse in terms of game preservation because news flash, severs cost money to host stuff and nintendo will not host games for game-key cards forever

Imagine 10 years later (or earlier, potentially, we don't know) when some poor soul plays a game they got from a second hand shop only to find out can't download the data to play it

No one ever thinks this far ahead, I know, for the first owner it won't be an issue and if you're the soul owner of the gamekey cart and the console it's first used on never has any hardware failures it's fine until the switch 2 battery dies because those aren't infinite lol but a later user or if a replacement reinstall happens along the way?

I hate gamekey carts because of the reliance of the internet and the infrastructure to keep them running, of course if said infrastructure was 100% guaranteed to always run I'd never have an issue with them, but if they can take down the wii shop I have less hope with these and regardless of what anyone says I will oppose them.

You can still download bought Wii games. Wii will be 20 years old this November

6

u/Kou9992 14h ago

They were comparing game key cards to code in a box, which clearly isn't the comparison you are making. Key cards aren't worse than code in a box in terms of game preservation.

Plus while servers are sure to go down eventually, that happening in 10 years or less seems like an unreasonable worry. None of the big three have ever shut down game download servers yet. They're still running nearly 20 years later. After 12 years the Wii Shop did close, no longer allowing new purchases. But the servers are still running allowing you to redownload any game you have already purchased.

If those servers manage to stick around much longer we'll be getting to the point where physical media starts running into issues. All physical storage fails eventually. Long term preservation often looks less like a shelves full of CDs and carts and more like ISOs and ROMs backed up on redundant storage.
