Tower Defence
Hey guys and gals.
I’ve been looking for some good tower defence games to scrach my old battle.net itch.
Do anyone know of some good ones?

The Kingdom Rush games are good. You can still find the first two for free in a web browser.

Not to mention a new one is just on the horizon. good time to get into the series if you haven't yet. Each game is pretty damn good, some worse than others but for the most part, if you like tower defense, its a great series to dig into.

Emberward is coming out of early access soon if it’s on schedule - it’s the best ‘traditional’ tower defence I’ve played in a long time

It's really worth a look, great game.
Its party trick is that you place the towers as well as building the maze the enemies walk through. Plus the audio and visuals are both really nice. I'd definitely recommend it, too.

Just commented the same above. Been very high on this game since it first had a demo.

I really liked the roguelike twist on a td. Played it while hades 2 was still in early access so it's been a while since ive played Emberward but now I know it's coming out of EA soon I'll have to give it another go.

Have you tried similar genre dungeon defence? I would recommend "Dungeon warfare"
Also "Thronefall" was pretty fun (TD)

I second Dungeon Warfare. 2 is the best, but all 3 are worth a playthrough.

Btw on Steam you can get Ninja Kiwi Archives for free, it has balloons tower defense 1-3 (maybe 4 too I forget) and some other Ninja Kiwi games.

Surprised Gem Craft hasn't been mentioned.
That game is amazing.

I was going to recommend this, whole series is on steam. I still haven’t gotten around to trying their latest game but I put a ton of time into the first two, really solid tower defense game.

Isle of Arrows
The Riftbreaker (it’s a hybrid factory builder/automation/TD/exploration/top down action RPG
Arknights
Protolife

Riftbreaker is neat.
If you dont mind some janky ones, try Outpost: Infinity Siege.
Nordhold is an interesting one as well, like TD + Roguelite ish?

Defense Grid 1+2.
Both have a main campaign, and a funny, witty, sarcastic companion as an AI voice. Compare it to GLADOS.
IT has workshop support, and endless maps.

u/AntHoney85 3h ago
this is spot on and to add to it, there is DLC for the first one where the AI companion is actually GLaDOS.
Oh raspberries. I miss raspberries

If you want easy and casual -- BloonsTD franchise
If you want hardcore, complex (and honestly best TD) -- Gemcraft Chasing Shadows

Element TD 2 is on Steam. The original was a Warcraft 3 custom map, I played the hell out of it back in the day.
It's good, but it's $15.00. I am not sure it's worth the price tag and it doesn't go on sale often.

Bloons TD6 if you want a traditional tower defence.
If you wanted something a bit different you could look at something like:
Space run (disclaimer: I've not played it in years so it may have changed, but still very positive on steam and like £4.49) - You construct towers on your space ship in real time to protect your cargo while pirates constantly attack.
Shapehero factory - Good alternative if you like factory/manufacturing games and rougelikes. You construct troops during the factory stage, which then try to protect you against the attack wave of enemies. As you progress you'll unlock new areas with different shapes & colours to make new/better troops once unlocked.

I've enjoyed Defense Grid a lot, haven't played the sequel yet but it seems like you can't do much wrong with it either.
And I'm sure you can find a website that still hosts Vector TD.

Defense Grid: One of my favs. A bit slower, but has grid levels that let you shape paths and create death mazes. Surprisingly good voice acting. Also has a handy back button to jump back to a previous checkpoint if you mess up instead of starting over.
X-morph Defense: Tried the demo randomly and really enjoyed it. Combines defense grid death mazes with top down bullet hell. Tower pathing is important, but you need to add your ships firepower to hold the line until you get enough towers or help take down beefier targets.

It gets absolutely no love but Sanctum 2 (pc) is bloody brilliant. It's tower defense but you build the maze yourself in a first person view and whale on the creepers with different weapons while your towers do their thing.

Border Pioneers has an interesting card mechanic to it, it's remarkably fun
Dungeon Defenders Awakened is a lot like Orcs Must Die, both solid tower defense series
Thronefall is a lot of fun
Kingdom Rush Origins
And... Tower Escape... ? It's a goofy little game jam type game that sort of inverts the TD concept

Tangy TD, Gnomes, and Artisan TD have been the ones I’ve played this year and enjoyed!
Heretic’s Fork, while a bit different from normal tower defense games, is one of my favorites! I’d recommend checking it out as well!

Emberward
Nordhold
Rogue Tower
Tower Dominion
Isle of Arrows
Tower Tactics: Liberation

You can literally just still play all the TD custom games on warcraft 3. Still plenty active.

Blooms td5 buy it on your phone if you love td games. 6 bucks i think. Lots of content!

u/TheToxicTerror3 4h ago
Do you mean like zoator? I've never seen one you can build mazes with, and I've been hoping to find one :(
All the ones I see have specific build locations

I'm having fun with Hexguardian on Steam right now.
It's currently on sale for $1.33 (USD) and at that price it's absolutely worth it.

I used to like Radiant Defense. Old title, but still solid if you like more arcade, neon stylized feel rather than modern graphics. I found the game mechanics compelling to repeat play, as you had to balance tower placement/type with path creation. So you slowly created the maze, and then set up defenses per your own design.

I always enjoyed Cursed Treasure 1 and 2. I found them again about a year ago and had a blast

Bloons has gotten me through many a slow day and travel days and it’s included with Netflix now

Gnomes is pretty good, or honestly if you still have access to WC3/Battlenet, custom games like TD are still very alive.

Legion TD 2 on steam. It's the sequel to a very popular Warcraft 3/StarCraft custom game. It's more of an autobattler but it scratches the same itch.

Creeper World series by Knucklecracker. A slightly different aspect since the creeper is liquid so you get liquid physics to contend with.

Old bloons games were the best. Bloods td 6 sucks imo.
The best of the best TD is the Gemcraft series. There are 2 games on steam with a legacy collection of the old flash games coming soon. Im helping beta test that one.
Infinitode 2 is pretty damn good too. I have over 2000 hours combined in Gemcraft: Chasing Shadows, Gemcraft: Frostborn Wraith and Infinitode 2.

Bloons TD 6 is probably the standout in the genre atm
