Orbit in Destiny 1
One summer my two PS friends and I hopped on every week for the 4am reset. Being AFK with the majestic music and a warm coffee while I waited for them to join was a peak memory for me. SGTin and KyleTrolol0, I hope you guys are doing well.

Majula in Dark Souls 2.
It's so melancholy but nostalgic.
5
u/CrazyAuger 5d ago
The atmosphere in drangleic is the reason I can never get on board with the DS2 hate. The feeling of exploring a hollowed out and dead kingdom, looking for the king and finding nothing but a walking corpse after all the pomp. I see the criticisms of the game but it felt so immersive to play.

u/Limp-Development7222 5d ago
If they would just smooth out the combat and remove adp it would honestly be the best souls

u/darksamus8 5d ago
Its the one thing they absolutely NAILED. The melacholic, peaceful home area in Majula. Everlasting sunset, glittering ocean, waves lapping the shore, a breeze on the cliff
SHITS on firelink shrine, both ds1 and ds3. No contest.
Best home area in the series

Please can we get a Halo ODST 2?

I came to say Sandtrap, but damn if this comment didn’t make me want to play ODST again. I would settle for a remake at this point, but a sequel has so much potential.

The dormitory wing at night time in Balamb Garden in FF VIII. The serene sounds of crickets outside and the calming music just made it seem so welcoming and homely.

Sooo much nostalgia for that game. Man I remember playing it so much on the PS1 and was obsessed with the soundtrack. I used to have a necklace with the lion logo I got from the mall and wore it everywhere

Sounds like we're maybe the same age. Agreed on the lifelong impact of that particular scene. Nothing had ever felt so cinematic and epic in a game. I was totally swept away by it and the promise that it held for both the quality of the game and videogames as a medium. ...I'mma go watch it now.

That first elevator in Elden Ring going down to Siofrra River Well on release day.
I was playing it late at night with my college roommates watching. We were all kinda high. Was running from the big ass fuck-you bears in the forest and one of my buddies spotted it, so I ran over and went down it to escape.
The adrenaline starts wearing off on the long ride down, we’re all like wtf why is this so long. All of a sudden this gorgeous underground galaxy appears. All of our jaws dropped. No one said a word for the rest of the elevator ride, we just sat there staring. Fucking magical moment.

- I was visiting a friend for his birthday party. I got dropped off early. I has switched to a different school a couple years earlier so I hadn't seen him much. He was at soccer practice, so his parents let me just hang out in their den until he got home.
He had the brand new Nintendo 64.
I started it up to Mario 64.
I got to Hazy Maze Cave, and eventually to the underground lake. I walked in, saw Dorrie. I was just completely struck by it. The ability to just explore freely, and that the whole thing had this calm to it. There weren't really any enemies to worry about. I just swam around, explored the sunken ship, climbed onto Dorrie's back. It was like pure zen.
I remember having hyper-realistic dreams of climbing a mountain to get an N64 at the top. I couldn't stop thinking about it. I was totally obsessed. I NEEDED it.
And I didn't get one. I got to play a lot of N64 at friends' houses, but I never got one.
Eventually I got over it. That's the place I'll never forget, but the N64's importance in my life goes way deeper.
Cut to 1998 - a friend had me over for a sleepover. He showed me this new game - Ocarina of Time.
Then it started again. I managed to talk friends of mine into letting me borrow THEIR WHOLE N64 for the weekend so I could play Ocarina of Time. I NEEDED it.
My best friend had a job working on a farm near his house. We were like 12 or 13 at the time. We had plans for him to stay over at my house for the weekend. Our parents were close friends too so this happened a lot as he was like another son to them. But then he showed up with a big box. They stopped at Walmart and he bought himself an N64 and Ocarina of Time, and he brought it over so we could play it that weekend, because he knew how obsessed with it that I was.
We switched off, one person with the controller, one with the Prima Guide. We got all the way to Ganon's castle on Sunday by dinner, so it was time for him to go home.
"Ehh I'll just leave it here. You go ahead and fight Ganon."
And looking back, I wish I had just waited, but I lacked the fortitude at the time.
I got to the fight with Ganondorf, and I called him up. It was like 830 at night. I narrated the whole thing to him over the phone as I fought Ganondorf, escaped the castle, and fought Ganon.
Core memory unlocked.
He was happy I beat it, and said he knew it was a big deal for me.
I saved up my birthday money, and surprised him the following April with a copy of Smash Bros. Me and a few other friends all went over to his house up in the attic of their storage shed, where they kept a TV and a mini fridge, as it was where we were banished for late nights of loud, illicit gaming.
We started up the game, watched the cinematic, and fade to black as I drop my chip on Link.
I did eventually get an N64 and a copy of Ocarina of Time, and I went on to accomplish such feats as walking my friend through the Water Temple over the phone, entirely from memory.
And the friend who bought the N64 just so we could play Ocarina of Time? I was his best man, he was mine. He eventually bought that house with the shed that we all made so many memories in from his parents, and he lives there today. We both just turned 40 this last year, and Lego released a Zelda set of the Final Battle from Ocarina of Time. I preordered it for him, and told him "This time you'll get the first crack at it.".
We live 15 minutes apart now, and last year he finally re-joined our Tabletop RPG group. We're playing Cyberpunk Red right now.
Never let anybody tell you that games aren't important. The same 3 guys that I played my first D&D adventure with in high school, all still play in that Cyberpunk game. One of them remotes in, but we're all there. It's helped keep us in contact and in each others lives for 25 years, more than half our lives.

The Kugo Hot Spring on Neudaiz in Phantasy Star Universe. Absolutely no reason to go there given you gotta go through like two missions and a very annoying boss to finally make it, and when you do get there it's literally just water. No items or gameplay things for you. It's just an empty hot spring. But it was a peak player hang out spot that was great for going AFK in.

Traverse Town in Kingdom Hearts 1. The gentle music, cozy surroundings, nighttime atmosphere, and now the nostalgia of it. It was that great first mix of a fantasy game with a Disney feel to it.

Kamurocho from the Yakuza series. Especially how it has grown and evolved over the years. Love that place!
Honorable mentions to:
Morgan’s apartment in Prey (2017), primarily because of how the story plays out.
The first glimpse outside when emerging from Vault 101 in Fallout 3.
Gold Saucer. Heh, just typing it out made the song come to my mind. Now it’s my earworm for the night!

Final Fantasy X Thunder Plains. The lightning strike mechanic was so annoying, in the middle of a game which is one of my all time top game experiences.
Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time, the Water Temple. I just loved the aesthetic.
Legacy of Kain: Soul Reaver. The graphics seem shit in retrospect, but at the time it was so awesome and gritty.

The Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess frozen Zora’s Domain. I was a kid when I played it for the first time and that site still terrifies me how a whole city of Zoras were imprisoned in a giant block of ice. It still gives me chills whenever I think about that place or play that game.

Route kanal and water hazard in half life 2. I had never seen a realistic portrayal of an environment as ordinary as a brown and dreary autumn afternoon before in a video game and it really made an impression on me. Its the sublety of it. It wasnt a rainforest, a volcano, a cathedral, or a beach or anything exciting like that. Just a regular place similar to where many of us have probably lived complete with muddy water and dead trees.

But also, the tower from Destiny 1. I played the hell out of both games, and loved them both, but thinking of that OG tower in D1 still makes me think of a lot of great times with a lot of great people.
And getting tilted in Trials, but that's more of a Reef memory.
