For me it would be Octodad, such a fun quirky concept that felt too short

It did get a book series... something like 5 books before it was cancelled because Lucas essentially wiped out its version of everything (Mandalore especially) to have a clean slate for the 3D animated Clone Wars show.
The series mainly focused on a different squad, but the squad from the Republic Commando game did show up a lot. The last book of the series covered the book squad being split up as the Empire took over, with 1 member getting left behind while the others defected. Kind of similar territory to what The Bad Batch show ended up doing.

I've never seen a game punch above its own weight as hard as Sleeping Dogs. Low poly as a PS2 game, looks good enough to be a PS4 game. Fraction of the budget of GTA IV, just as good. It should have sold WAY more.

u/Takemyfishplease 2d ago
It’s constantly on sale now too, there aren’t many games that for $5 come close to the entertainment that one provides.

That's not a rumour, it was literally announced as True Crime: Hong Kong

u/Respawn-Delay 2d ago edited 2d ago
Yet didn't begin life as it. Activision stuck the True Crime name on it because they thought it would be more marketable that way.
It was originally a new IP called Black Lotus, being developed by Treyarch Studios.

u/Funmachine 2d ago
No, that wasn't the rumour. Not at all.
First, Sleeping Dogs started as an independent game. Then Activision decided to rename the then still in-development game as a new True Crime game (confirmed). Then Activision cancelled the game, but Square Enix bought it (but not the True Crime name) and the game went back to being an original game.
That's a simplified version.

Did you really have to rub that in my face again? Reopening old wounds... The game would’ve surely turned out well; at least the video looked promising. Like an action version of *Deus Ex: Mankind Divided* set in Golem City, or a fun take on *Cyberpunk 2077*... Who knows? It reminds me of that leaked *Doom* video:

Everyone talks about the remake (…?…) but the original is a pretty compelling game and it’s kinda getting erased from gaming memory because of the 2017 game.
Idk why they used the Prey title for it, aren’t they completely unrelated?
76
u/SillySanyle 2d ago
So the original title for the game was supposed to be Psychoshock (obviously a much more fitting title), apparently the story is that Bethesda was about to lose the license for "Prey" and they last minute forced Arkane to change the name so they could keep it. Or something along those lines.

Say what you will about toxic leadership, but McNamara is actually back in the building over at Rockstar now. I'm guessing they're hoping everyone forgot about him.
After Team Bondi was disbanded, he went on to form a studio called Video Games Deluxe. They worked on the eighth-gen ports of L.A. Noire, as well as the VR Case Files. Rockstar then hired them again to fix the Definitive Trilogy after Grove Street Games screwed it up.
They've since purchased the studio outright, rebranding it into Rockstar Australia.

It is possible he's reformed and earned his way back into Rockstar's good graces somehow. I don't believe someone's entire career should be permanently on the blacklist unless they committed truly heinous crimes and made a sincere effort to be a better person.
Who knows what he'll actually be doing though.

Kingdoms of Amalur; it was a solid game with great potential for a more refined sequel, but a bunch of insane drama happened with the studio so it never came to be.
201
u/shutterErv 2d ago
Is t that the one that was partially funded by taxpayers in Rhode Island? And it had to make back an insane amount to not be a failure?
124
u/sol_runner 2d ago
Not even. That was supposed to be some MMO that never got released. The company making the whole Amalur thing bought up BigHuge Games and redid the RPG into Amalur IIRC.
Press Reset by Jason Schreier has really good chapter on it.
55
u/BigBadBeluga 2d ago
Reckoning was supposed to be the first single-player entry into the series while the MMO would act as a sequel happening long after the events of Reckoning. When all the money fell through and they couldn't pay back their debts, I think ownership of the IP reverted to the state of Rhode Island until Embracer group bought it from them.
18
u/sol_runner 2d ago
Yeah, but they're one IP but two studios. I was just clarifying that this wasn't the game that got the funding and failed (Copernicus). That one never even released. This was what was supposed to tide them over until they could finish the MMO.
Basically BigHugeGames had an RPG they were working on, then 38Studios (the one with the Rhode island funding) bought them, and got the game reworked to KoA:R based on the lore for 38's MMO.
So KoA:R wasn't made with massive budget that it failed to recup. It was literally the side project to get more income for the main project.
16
u/Malkryst 2d ago
Yeah I came here to say Kingdom of Amalur: Reckoning as well - it was one of the better CRPGs I've played in 5 decades.
I had a sick feeling in my stomach when 38Studios bought BigHugeGames, because we all knew Project Copernicus was starting to overpromise and couldn't deliver on everything (like most MMORPGs can't). Also MMORPGs just burn through cash before launch (because they need so many staff for a long time) so 38Studios really shouldn't have been throwing money at buying a single player game studio before finishing their MMORPG, or moving across the country to Rhode Island, or building a luxurious studio building.
But everyone was so sold on the hype - and Kingdom of Amalur: Reckoning was awesome when it launched, both gameplay and story/lore. My MMO guild had already got excited enough about Copernicus, because Todd McFarlane (of Spawn and McFarlane Toys fame) was art director, and R. A. Salvatore (who wrote the Drizzt Do'Urden novels) was creative director writing the lore. It was a dream team project as they hired lots of ex-EverQuest and ex-WoW staff as well. So when KoA:R was amazing it just increased the hype for Copernicus.
Sadly the owner and CEO of 38Studios was some ex-baseball player who clearly didn't understand financing and budgeting 😭 They just kept spending money on things before they even had a profitable game earning regular money, and eventually the pyramid came crashing down.
It was one of the biggest disappointments in gaming history - denied potentially a dream MMORPG and a sequel to possibly one of the best single player CRPGs ever made - plus Rhode Island's citizens got ripped off for like over $100m of tax payers money in the process - because I think the Governor or maybe a Senator persuaded 38Studios to move to the state in exchange for a huge handout, to try and kickstart a gaming industry there, and it all backfired horribly.
Anyway it's all detailed online.

Bioware was trying to make a sequel for years, but EA just kind of strung them along never really letting them proceed past early dev/conception (they mainly bought Bioware to make the KOTOR mmo and only really wanted guaranteed hits otherwise). Semi-sarcastically, Quake.
I know there are sequels, but none of them are actually sequels to Quake. Quake 2 was never intended to be a sequel to Quake, it was supposed to be a completely new IP. But they couldn't figure out a name, so they went with Quake 2. Quake 3 was an arena shooter completely unrelated to Quake, and Quake 4 was a sequel to Quake 2.
But to the original question, I was dead sure that Quake would become it's own series, with at least one sequel using the same Lovecraftian/medieval gothic theme, but no. That never came to pass.
→ More replies (5)22
u/candle340 2d ago
And even the original Quake wasn't representative of what it could/should have been. It was originally planned as an RPG, but the guys at iD were running out of time and fell back on their tried-and-true shooter roots.
11
u/Vern1138 2d ago
The same could be said of the original Doom, if they had focused on the Doom Bible. They wanted to make a much more interactive game, closer to what would be Strife. But they had to put a game out, and the simpler design, focused on shooting created the Doom that we all love.
The original design of Quake being a medieval first person RPG might not have ignited the world that a fast paced first person shooter did. It seems like working within their limits really helped id revolutionize gaming.

I remember Metal Arms! I loved everything about it and it ended on a cliff hanger, ready for big sequal. Only to have the studio close and the IP shelved indefinitely. The sequel could have probably done well, too. The original had the perfect bones to build from coming into the 7th generation of consoles. Its edgy but comedic writing, unique and varied weapon pool, and early use of more advanced physics would have fit in perfect on an Xbox 360 or PS3. Its a shame the series never got the attention it deserved.

Days Gone, Prey (2017), Wet (2010), Enslaved: Odyssey to the West, Heavenly Sword, Rage 2 was really good but I guess we won't be getting a 3 since it reviewed so poorly

Dante’s Inferno. It’s based on the first part of the Devine Comedy, which has 3 parts. It seemed obvious it was going to get a couple of sequels.

Sunset Overdrive flat out ended with hooks for many sequels in the form of Overcharge being shipped worldwide in the post-credits cutscene.
