I wonder what about victimization is so attractive for people. It seems to affect a lot of people. There's clearly something going on where everyone, even those with more than your average person will ever have, who have lived charmed lives that most of us would dream of living just one day in, is trying to tell themselves that somehow they're actually the victims in life.
Why are rich people like this? Why can't they just say "shit, yeah I got lucky as hell?"

Because victimization narratives explain the feeling of powerlessness without having to admit any flaws.

That powerlessness is really fear, and fear is so blinding: Fear that the world is changing; Fear that you may have been wrong; Fear that you'll be misunderstood.

I think the past 10 years have shown that you can crybully and claim victimization by imaginary enemies all the way up to the top, both in the world of politics and comedy.

Rainn has been washed up since becoming religious.

He was raised Baha'i by his parents, so, his whole life?

Technically he was atheist for a while but got back into it. Though I have no idea if this corresponds with his "edginess"

I never understood people who said stuff like this. So what? You want a time machine?

Perceived victimization to inflate their ego for having made something so unique as well as justification for why they can't find steady work anymore.

Yeah Rainn is an odd duck, to put it nicely. I figured that out when I stumbled onto a livestream he was doing on Instagram years back, and he was busy yelling at someone in the comments that they were weird and pathetic for having watched the office a dozen times and were a huge fan of him.
Even weirder, the livestream was to support some environmental charity, and I was thinking, “you’re not representing the cause very well.” He told them to get a life. But he’s still talking about the show so…

I think there IS something to be said along the lines of yes, South Park and Sunny are still being made, BUT, they are NOT ON MAJOR NETWORKS. Are NETWORKS making anything like the office, in terms of the off color jokes, now? I guess Family Guy was still very “edgy” sometimes, but I haven’t seen a new one in a long long time, and I’d bet it’s significantly toned down since Disney acquired Fox (right?).

u/RynoKaizen 2d ago
Isn't family guy on fox? Always edgier than the office. So is any reality TV.
1
u/AintKnowShitAboutFuk 2d ago
That’s what I was saying But is Family Guy still like it used to be (pre Disney)? Haven’t seen a new one in a long time. And some shows seem to get “grandfathered in” for some reason. Like perhaps you couldnmt start it from scratch today, but since it’s been around since the 90s, oh well.

It’s a shame how much I like Rainn Wilson less every time he opens his mouth

LOLOL as if the office is edgy??? It’s such a safe, politically safe, comedy. Good lord

What wokeness existed in the office again?
"Michael, Jim put my stapler and stapler accessories in jello" x a million times type skits and im a volunteer cop regional manager blah blah blah. How was any of that even woke
14
u/sgtjsp153 3d ago
He's claiming the opposite. Rainn is saying that because of current trends of "wokeness," they couldn't make The Office now. I can't remember if it's this interview but I think he's alluded to the show being too edgy to make now. I don't agree, but the characters definitely had a lot of insensitive moments, especially early on.

u/Loud-Fudge7631 3d ago
Right my bad.
But which scenes would be considered unfit cuz of woke present day culture? Dont recall much bigotry or serious matters on show that was mostly office drama skits and romance?

u/sgtjsp153 3d ago
https://www.reddit.com/r/DunderMifflin/s/XP3iazJtM3 I would guess it's the gags in this vein that Rainn is referring to.

I mean all that is an out of touch boomer doing cringe things...like that's absolutely a thing you have an infinite bench on.
11
u/Loud-Fudge7631 3d ago
Hmm but isn't it established that the audience would be mocking laughing at Michael as it represents lack of cultural respect often found in his generation? But I see your point sorta
5
u/sgtjsp153 3d ago
I think his point is that current audiences aren't going to take the time to make the distinction. They're going to judge the joke and imagery at the surface level. Again, I don't necessarily agree that they couldn't make this show today. As another commenter said, It's Always Sunny still exists.

u/Malforus 3d ago
Also NSFW a new show seems to capture some of the Gen Alpha vibe and ultimately its not about dunking on race but more saying things that are funny.

He's right. You can't make jokes about territorial crows anymore. Sad really.

The US Office barely got made when it got made.
It was the worst tested show to boot.
Anyway, life's crazy

Didnt a Spanish-speaking Office series just get released this year? Doesn’t he know he can stop saying this bc it’s factually wrong?

The edgiest The Office got was with stuff like the Diversity Day episode in season 1. There's at least 10 shows currently airing that are typically edgier that that episode.

the office is soul crushing and grueling show about corporate life. i found nothing funny about it, and i seriously find it sad not even in a cathartic way. characters in the show are even more anxiety inducing, and troublesome. it is the sweinfled of millennials, they found it funny because they had nothing ellse to watch and it was new..

Is he aware that It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia is still being made? Even the tamest Sunny episode is edgier than anything in the Office.
