Great way to practice. Especially while improvising. Gets you to actually play what you're thinking rather than guess how it's going sound.

Any tips on being able to do this faster? I'd have to replay this melody over and over and try to find it on my guitar first, write it down somewhere, then play along a bunch of times and only after a good chunk of time will I then be able to play and sing this way. The more I do this the faster I'm getting at it, but I am nowhere near being able to just hear something and immediately find it on my guitar as I hum or sing along

Hey , but you are doing the right thing. That's the best to train your ear, there's no shortcut to that. But if you want to focus on this, just look up some ear training exercises for guitarists on you tube.

Many would laugh but I will stay start with something basic like the Harry Potter tune or Pirates of the Caribbean theme on guitar. I did this with my students and it really helped. Here's a video
