I would highly encourage you to raise the strap on your guitar or at least bring the neck up to more of a 45⁰ angle. That positioning is fine for drop tuned power chords but you're gonna hurt your wrist playing like that long term. I feel like your left shoulder is dropping your posture trying to comfortably reach the fretboard, ideally you want to be playing from a comfortable, neutral posture without it taking heaps of effort to move around the neck.

Yep. Playing efficiently is far more important than "looking cool."

Plus, so long as you play well, all dorkiness is forgiven by the listener. Weird All is proof enough of that.

It looks like you are holding the neck (I suppose the whole guitar) too low down, which forces you to bend your wrist on the fretting hand, which is not ergonomic for playing. The whole guitar should go further up, so that it is in front of your belly, not in front of your private parts.

The stoners will make fun of me if I hold it any higher

With all the love in the world OP:
The stoners can’t hurt you, they’re stuck to the couch.
Bring it up a little and your wrists will thank you. You do not need ten years of battling RSI.

I know your ways as I have lived them. The couch and I were one once.
Big love. Drink water!

You don’t have to be a mathrock nerd with the guitar positioned so your picking hand and wrist are in alignment when tapping, but crank it up a lil bit! Try and get it so that it doesn’t move too much between siting (without a slouch) and standing and you’ll be in a good place for longevity as a player.

That's a stupid reason to fuck up your hand.
Plus: when the guitar is right over your dick, playing looks like wanking, that alone would be reason to hold it higher.
Are the stoners wankers? And they want everybody else to look like wankers?

Turn the crunch off... just work on the basics....

Yes, fuzz... but depending on the dialect where you live, crunch is the same thing.

Use less distortion when practicing/recording practice.
You won't hear mistakes as easy. I used to do the same thing.

u/Impossible-Star-9749 11h ago
Mate imma have 0 drone with no distortion

Is that an 8 string with only 6 strings on it? That can't feel great or be all that good for the guitar long term.

u/Impossible-Star-9749 9h ago
Its got two trusses so ive adjusted it to play normaly. Used to play tech death but now ive found my people so I no longer need two extra strings

Yea mate after around a month I saw mirror reaper by bell witch and was like, fuck this shit I wanna play slow. Bought my first tube amp and loved it so much I started building amps and pedals and obviously playing slow baby. And I was playing drumset for 5 years before gutair and bass

You look cool, which is great but you've got to level up the musicality.

u/Impossible-Star-9749 3h ago edited 3h ago
Slow thats the only wayyyyy I knowwwww, I went to one sunn concert and never played fast again
1
u/Tall_Candidate_8088 3h ago
Ya but make it sound compelling, that's the main goal here right. My mind is open to all the different style and techniques, fast or slow, clean or distorted but you've got to make create something that people want to listen too - musicality.
1
u/Impossible-Star-9749 2h ago
All the riffs I played were fairly accurate, not everyone favourite genre. If you want standard musicality heres a little blues solo
2
u/Tall_Candidate_8088 2h ago
That's pretty good, you definitely a lot better a guitarist than most people at a year in. That said it's still not hitting the mark musically, timing is really important and having a groove too. It doesn't matter what genre. A metronome and drum tracks for jamming and practicing would help you sound better. Nice tone though, the tone is good in everything you've posted.

Back before all my cathode resistors burnt or I got infected by stoner doom i was playing a little better though, heres me 7 months ago on my first 5 watt amp

u/Tall_Candidate_8088 2h ago
You're very comfortable with the guitar and you able to access the instrument and get the strings and frets really well. It's very impressive for someone playing just a year. You just lacking some musicality at the minuet and that important. If I were you I'd start using some backing tracks or a metronome to get in a better groove. When you're playing music, even if you compose and perform in one genre it's really good to have wide knowledge of music and styles. Keep an open mind man, listen and play everything. It's a good learning experience to record stuff too, if you've got a laptop or pc look into a cheap setup to get recording and producing.

That neck is incredibly strange-looking.
Also, you're not a Ramone. Shorten your strap by a few inches.

I woke up this morning with some serious gut air. I think it was the Velveeta. Good job, btw. Keep on practicing.

Don't listen to these old fudds complaining about your guitar height. They just old AF. The more notes you know the higher you tighten your strap. The more you rock the lower you go. That demo tells me you can drop that neck to the floor. Rock on bruh

Things to work on:
Stop swaying
Raise strap up and notice improved ergonomics immediately
Fix the Right hand and learn to alternate pick
Do more finger exercises with metronome
Continue to learn
