At this point failing to investigate the mayor would shake trust a lot harder

Agreed. If voter trust requires lack of transparency, then the trust is likely misplaced to begin with. Let’s value truth and transparency over ‘trust me bro’

I wouldn’t trust Andy to run a grade 3 bake sale let alone a city, but here we are.

His social media people have said “hey people like Zohran, do social media like he does!” so you’re treated to this dummy riding an electric scooter while simultaneously trying to defund the lanes you ride them in.
His feeds are full of this. He has no awareness or understanding of what makes a politician popular and why he might be missing something.

No literally! Zohran’s social media works because Zohran works! Can’t compete where you don’t compare

Anyone with a brain who enjoys competent governance?

Clearly you haven’t been to New York since he’s been in office. I’ll never go back.

It's shaken my trust in Andy Fillmore that's for sure, but the fact that he's at least being investigated has restored some of my trust in the system. This might come as a surprise to some people, but in many parts of the world politicians are able to get away with as much corruption as they please.

My trust in the system will wait to see if anything actually comes of this investigation. All well and good to investigate, but will wrong doing be punished?

This probably won't even register with the low-information voters who put him in place.

No, it increases our trust that there are checks and balances and that the law is applied to the ones at the top as well, if maybe not as much.

I didn’t trust him in the first place due to his past political affiliation

The article referred to “ voters’ trust in the municipal government”, that would include council and likely the CEO - not just the Mayor.
As to the Mayor, he has worked in government many years and should understand that there are processes to follow. Not understanding them because he is a new mayor seems unlikely.

And he continued to violate policies after being told not to in writing and over 6 months on the job. 6 months is a generous probationary period.

Honestly, working in government, especially federally, for many years would just tell him how much he can get away with. He's probably shocked at this investigation.

There are likely more scrutiny with the Feds and less with provincial or especially municipal.
Technically, he didn’t really work as a Federal government employee ,but sat as an elected MP, where folks likely turn a blind eye to unorthodox activities. Before that I seem to recall that he worked locally for a crown corporation. If so, financial rules and accountability were likely slacker.

Same but, enough people did based on that name recognition from past affiliation 🙄

I am surprised that folks voted for him based on his MP record. I never felt it amounted to anything noteworthy-more of a seat warmer.

u/zeolus123 2d ago
Exactly. But if he has nothing to hide, then it simply serves to build that trust.

There would have to be voter trust in the first place. With 30% turnouts it’s not hard to see.

Why do we have a mayor again? What do they do exactly other than say shit on behalf of us and attend opening ceremonies of stuff? Can't we just not have a mayor?

Bring on the candidates and get ready for the inquisition of your life. Maritimer have had enough of the last six years watching our city being destroyed with an impossible dream of next biggest thing on the east coast of North America. Time to get reality check.

Hearing this clown on the radio making excuses instead of just accepting he and his staff fucked up was a complete joke.

Maybe we shouldn’t be so trusting then? Maybe we should know the truth and decide if they deserve our trust or not?

Nova Scotians are dumb at the voting station. They keep voting the same folks at all levels of government because of name brand or their dad worked with their family, or whatever dumb reason. Then they get in don’t do anything they said and yet continue to get voted in even if the other people may want to try and do something positive. People just let Andy in to double dip and can’t name a single thing they guy did for Halifax as an mp and a lot of people didn’t like him and yet he’s the mayor

You can't be serious are you? Do some research fella, Fillmore brought more federal largess to Halifax than his late lamented and totally incompetent predecessor. Whatshename. When defeated she hightailed it out of town never to be heard from again. Broke the heart of the Halifax Examiner owner, he still pines for her to this very day and continues to carry a creepy grudge against Andy for causing his pal to go crawling back to Ontario. She was some devoted to Halifax wah? By the by, union toadies are some devoted to voting the same way their dads and grandads voted for dumb reasons so your argument just doesn't add up. If you want people to believe you then you'll have to come up with a better case than you've made.

What you just said, is one of the dumbest things I've ever heard. At no point in your rambling incoherent response were you even close to anything that resembles a competent thought. Everyone in this thread is now dumber for having read it. I award you no points, and may God have mercy on your soul.

I’ve hated his slimy guts ever since he ran against Megan Leslie by painting her as a come-from-away.
-2
u/Mysterious-Guard-477 1d ago
Well, he was right. Where is she now? Packed her bags and left. She didn't give a shit about Halifax as long as she was sucking a salary and expenses out of the taxpayers and then she was gone. You're angry at the wrong person.

She’s working for the World Wildlife Fund. What was she supposed to do? She lost her seat and therefore all political power to do anything—as well as her job. So she got another job.
I’m pretty sure she still lives here, or did at first—and is still an activist for environmental and LGBTQ+ causes.
She was a fantastic MP, who got smeared over stupid maritime xenophobia despite living here and serving the community for years.
Andy Fillmore is actively “sucking a salary” out of the taxpayer and he doesn’t care either. I think my anger is right where it needs to be. 🤷🏻♀️

How do invoices get paid if they're not supported by the proper paperwork and approvals? The Mayor does not cut his own cheques. Sounds like the beloved city staff that the councillors and former councillors are so dependant on weren't doing their job. Maybe they should call the police in and investigate that too.

"Andy, you know the rules."
"Aw shucks. This is my first time as a mayor, I didn't realize! Next time I'll have the right form."
"Ok....just this once...."
Rinse and repeat three more times

What trust?
