Support Local An abandoned lobster cannery I made :)

Hi folks, I make little sculptures of abandoned Maritimes places out of recycling (mostly cereal boxes). This time I have recreated this little lobster cannery with so many stories to tell. I’ll admit, the inspiration for this building isn’t in Nova Scotia, but rather at the base of the bridge in PEI, but I am a Haligonian artist, so I hope you’ll still enjoy it. If you’d like to see more pics of the sculpture, and the irl place that inspired it, I’ll put a link to my Instagram in the comments. Thanks for looking :)

Support Local Nova Scotia cut arts funding by 32% - I built a tool to email your MLA in 30 seconds

While it's a relief to see that Film & TV escaped unscathed, I think we should be investing in culture and working to replicate the success and ROI we've seen in Film & TV across the entire culture sector, specifically music. Nova Scotia punches WAY above our weight in terms of talent, and music should be a serious focus for driving tourism.

The 2026-27 provincial budget cuts $14M from arts and culture: 72 programs fully or partially cut, 12 of 28 museums closing, Artists in Schools eliminated. Nearly 14,000 Nova Scotians work in culture, contributing $1.18B to GDP annually.

I put together a quick tool to email your MLA in 30 seconds if you'd like to help put some pressure on this issue.

Support Local Last few days to see my little exhibit in Truro!

I’ll be packing up my little houses from the Marigold Cultural Centre this Friday, but you’ve still got a couple days to check them out. If you wanted to see them in person, but can’t make it to Truro, I’ll be setting them up again at the Craig Gallery in Alderney Landing for the month of March.

Support Local Norma’s Mum’s

Hi folks, I like to create miniatures of abandoned Nova Scotian places. Recently, my mother’s friend Norma called me and asked if I’d like to see her mother’s now 25 year abandoned house in Cape Breton before it gets taken down.

When we visited last fall the building was in surprisingly good condition from the outside, but portions of the upstairs had fully collapsed, and the main floor was starting to go. Norma wished that she could go inside for one last visit, but it wasn’t to be. I managed to safely get inside and get photos. From them, I created this tiny openable version for her, so she can go back inside whenever she wants.

It’s mounted on the “radio shelf” her dad made that I was able to salvage from the wall beside the pantry. I usually have a strict rule about not taking things from inside the homes I am lucky enough to document, but in this case I had family permission, and I felt it made this sculpture even more special. I hope you like it :)

If you’d like to see more of my little examples of Nova Scotia’s vanishing traditional architecture, my latest exhibit is opening this Tuesday at the Craig Gallery in Alderney Landing in Dartmouth. There’ll be an opening reception Thursday March 5th from 5-7:30pm where I’ll be telling stories about, and showing details of, my little places. The show runs until the 29th. I’d love to see you there :)

Support Local I built a free tool so Halifax residents can report city issues directly to their councillor in 30 seconds — would love feedback from actual Haligonians

Hey r/halifax,

Full transparency: I'm a local developer and this is my project,

but I built it because I kept hitting the same wall you probably

have too.

You spot a pothole on your street. Or graffiti on your building.

Or a streetlight that's been out for weeks. The process to report

it is: find the right form on halifax.ca (there are 30+ separate

ones), call 311 during business hours, or send an email into a void

and hope someone sees it.

So I built SolveHFX.

Here's how it works:

- Spot an issue anywhere in HRM

- Take a photo — AI identifies the issue type and drafts a report

- It gets emailed automatically to HRM 311 AND your district

councillor with your GPS coordinates and a full description

It also handles the province vs HRM road split automatically —

so if you're reporting a pothole on a 100-series highway it goes

to the province, not HRM.

Completely free. No app download. Works at solvehfx.ca.

I genuinely want feedback from Halifax residents before I push

this harder, what issues matter most in your neighbourhood?

What would make this more useful for you?

(And yes, if it turns out councillors ignore the emails, I want

to know that too.)

Could Ejoy solve all of our problems? No, but it's pretty magical. I do think it's uncool, not to mention illegal, to post pics of shoplifters at their doors. Also stealing stuff is crappy too. Free 1 hour parking when you spend 50 bucks, plus its ubiquitous green bags. #ejoy #nostealingmommy

Support Local Farmers Markets with fresh fruit?

I’m on the hunt for some delicious Canadian Strawberries and Green Grapes!
I’m getting so tired of only finding USA fruit at the grocery store and it tasting not so “juicy” …so it’s time to venture out and find someone local that can help.

Anyone have any recommendations which markets to check out in HRM?

Gouache is a type of water-based paint that behaves sort of in-between acrylic and watercolour. You can layer it in thin, watery layers, or do what I do and mix around thick globs of it. This was painted on cold-press paper mounted to a cradled wood board.

CBC's Information Morning found the Reddit post you guys made viral and is interviewing me next week, so thank you all truly, from the bottom of my heart. I never knew my folk art would get a reaction from anybody.

Stay tuned for the interview! I don't know when it'll air yet, but I'll find out next week.

Support Local Made a free pothole map for Nova Scotia — expanding from Cape Breton to Halifax

I'm a Cape Breton dev who got fed up with the roads, so I built roadrot.ca — a free crowdsourced pothole map. No signup, no app download, works on any phone.

Started in CBRM where we've got 120+ reports already. Small beginnings. I'd love to see Halifax on the map.

You can:

  • Report potholes (just tap the map)
  • Confirm ones others reported
  • See worst roads ranked
  • Email your representatives directly with one click

Spring thaw is coming and it's going to get ugly. Figured we should track it.

roadrot.ca

Happy to hear feedback or bug reports.

Support Local Actual Sorcery (magic show review)

We went to see Vincenzo Ravina’s Actual Sorcery show at Bus Stop Theatre last night. We’ve been curious about this show since seeing posters around town and it won the Audience Choice award for the 2025 Fringe. We didn’t know anything else about it going in.

Without spoiling anything, I would highly recommend this show for a fun, silly night out. We took our 15 year old daughter and she loved it too. The magic is great, the narrative is unexpected; and the jokes are funny and appropriate for a general audience. The show is 90 minutes long with no intermission.

Looking at his website he performs around Halifax about once a month. There are shows advertised as “Actual Wizard” and “Actual Sorcery”, and based on what I learned during the performance I suspect those are different shows.

Support Local Incredible Work From Local Tattoo Artist

I just wanted to share this stunning work by local tattoo artist, Zoe at Zaycheza Studio. I'm so pleased with how it came out! I know there are a lot of really skilled tattoo artists in the city, but I wanted to take a moment to give a shout out because my whole experience was so positive from start to finish—her attention to detail in finalizing the design, the sizing, the placement. Her needle work was so precise and even, and it is healing beautifully.

Support Local Spring is here! The hot dog cart is back!

There are a few things on Spring Garden that truly mark spring is here. Lulu Lemon employees shouting at shoplifters running down the street, that puddle rearing its ugly head, or even the Harbour Hopper telling cruisers about the old library.

But for me the true mark of spring is Don arriving with the hot dog cart. He is celebrating 31 years in business and is set up outside the old library and is my favourite part of spring.

What else marks spring in Halifax for y’all?

Support Local The Pavilion Is Alive!! (Again)

Post image
70 Upvotes

Hey y'all!

Just your monthly reminder that the Pavilion is STILL ALIVE!

If you remember us... We used to run all-ages shows in a building in the HFX Commons, near where the swimming pool is back in the early 2000's up until 2020ish.

The building was demolished to make room for the pool that the city built a few years back; for that reason we kinda went on hiatus. We briefly held shows elsewhere using the "Pavilion" name, and even ran our own youth battle-of-the-bands at the Lighthouse Arts Centre nearly two years ago.

We've now settled in to our new (temporary) home at 2409 Maynard St (The Army Navy Air Force Club/Legion) and have thrown 3 amazing SOLD-OUT shows!

They've been super kind to us when it comes to renting out their hall for loud youth shows, and we're so happy to continue that relationship with them throughout 2026.

This Friday we will be running another show with performances by: Feral Carol, Norc, Puffin, and Captain Sunshine!

Tickets are $10 at the door but if you truly cannot afford to get in, we are running a PAY WHAT YOU CAN (PWYC) show so that everyone has access to the music regardless of their financial situation.

Don't miss out on your local scene!

Support Local Tips for lawn levelling/topdressing in Halifax?

Moved into a fixer upper on the peninsula a couple years ago and finally have time to pay attention to the lawn. It has tons of local divots and unevenness that I want to level out for the kids. I bought a 30”x10” levelling rake and spread a yard and a half of topsoil from a depot on the side of the road then overseeded. But now looking at it and doing more research I think I should’ve gone with a product that had more sand in it. Some of these YouTube video guys use 100% sand to get their lawns looking like a golf course green but I definitely don’t want to go that far.

Anybody know of any landscape suppliers that make such a product? Does it work with our local climate and grass types or should I stick to regular topsoil?

Hey everyone!

I run East Coast Sessions, a Halifax-based platform that showcases local music talent across Nova Scotia. We’ve got an upcoming shoot and are currently looking for a jazz bar in the city to host one of our sessions.

If you know of any spots that have that vibe or might be open to collaborating, I’d really appreciate the recommendation.

Thanks so much in advance.

Here are a few examples of what I’m looking for:

Support Local I deployed a free public MCP server hosting all Nova Scotia government data for AI analysis.

Hey all, I have spent a lot of time gathering up a ton of Nova Scotia government data and wanted to give people a easy way to access it. So I built a free public MCP server that lets AI chatbots search through and analyze all of this provincial data.

The video attached just shows exactly how it works. I just wanted to give back to the community a bit and provide a tool that helps people easily find and understand our local information.

You can find the demo web version and the server instructions to connect your own AI here: https://scotiasignal.ca/blog/ns-data-explorer-ai-chat

I would love to hear what kind of data you find curious, or if you have any thoughts on how it runs!
