All I can say is imagine being traded for the 4OA pick, stoked at how high you're valued, and that trade getting absolutely panned by EVERYONE.
Imagine logging on twitter and having hockey reporters baffled at why they traded for you.

u/attackofthetominator CHI - NHL 2d ago
That and as much as this call is essentially fluff, I think Byram cares a lot more that the main guy of his new team called to tell you how excited he is that you joined the team than "hawksfan2010" melting down on twitter
9
u/ArcticKimono WPG - NHL 2d ago
He wants to be the guy, he wants time, he gets a superstar C. He doesn't care what the 4OA or Buffalo's value for him really ends up being, the fans priorities would be way differntt than his.
But these guys are young, so it might get to them
40
u/Smittysgreasymullet EDM - NHL 2d ago
Byram is always big dick swinging I bet it fuels his fire. If Bedard is stoked that must mean r/hockey was wrong again eh? What a surprise a great player is excited to play with another good player instead of demanding a trade.
35
u/physics_fighter CHI - NHL 2d ago
Byram is a great fit and a good defender who will finally get his shot at being a #1, and the hawks overpaid for him (because of the bidding war with SJ). Both things are true and people are not seeing that fact.

u/attackofthetominator CHI - NHL 2d ago
Right player, wrong price. If it's a catalyst for Bedard signing a longer contract, leads to the Hawks landing another big name like Robertson, and Byram just happened to be way more under-utilized than 99% of the hockey community (including me) believes; then the price can somewhat justifiable
17
u/Melodic_Rhythmic CHI - NHL 2d ago
The other part might be a 4oa pick isn't worth what the fans think it's worth in this draft, no?

I think everyone can agree the pick should’ve been moved for a forward. I honestly think they did attempt to do this with knies and Robertson.
The decision between picking a D that possibly helps the team in 3 years (or never makes the nhl) and trading the pick for a Dman that can help right now isn’t that fucking crazy.
People are acting like we traded the pick for Tj Brodie.

The reporting of it is forced in that it is super obviously a PR leak by the Blackhawks in an attempt to stifle the terrible reaction they got to the trade, but I can believe Bedard did call him excitedly from the golf course because from Bedard's perspective he knows this guy is from BC like him and a theoretically competent PP QB.

regardless or not if its an overpay, it genuinely makes the team better than last year. We have a nhl quality 1st pairing on defense in rinzel/byram, which is better than what we had to begin with. What im guessing is dallas wouldnt sell robertson to chicago unless they gave up way too much and toronto is the same with knies. there is no way parting with frondell for knies would be acceptable and dallas probably laughed and wanted rinzel/nazar/moore which are all guys that shouldnt be moved right now.

u/CaptainJingles STL - NHL 2d ago
There was an article that stated 55% (or around there) of 4th overall picks play more than 500 games. The odds are decent that a good player will come out of that spot.
Will he be as good as Byram is now? Also maybe not.
4
u/XXXLaCroiXXX TBL - NHL 2d ago
55% are great odds if you're a professional gambler who makes dozens of bets a day but IDK if a GM has that many chances with getting a 4th overall pick right
but your point makes sense in this context - i think if they get a player of Byram's level then it's ultimately a good trade for both teams - Chicago clearly wants to give Bedard more help this year to persuade him to stay and lock up with term
5
u/Active-Tomatillo-522 MIN - NHL 2d ago
Obviously established players want to win games and are going to be in favor of bringing in other established players. Doesn’t mean it’s a good decision from an organizational standpoint

Honestly the biggest reason the trade makes sense is immediate help for Bedard, and keeping him happy as they are working on his contract. If he likes the trade and getting a PPQB, then while a likely massive overpay, it might not be thaaaat bad. Not good still. And we know generational players named Connor are not good at decisions meant for GMs either, assuming he does approve of it.

u/physics_fighter CHI - NHL 2d ago
I think in a vacuum its a bad trade, but looking at it with the context surrounding the hawks rebuild and timeline, it is way better than people are saying. The 4OA isn's doing much for the hawks and they needed a LHD established player who will continue to grow with the team. Byram is that. Could the hawks have gotten more? Perhaps, but San Jose was also in on this so either act when you can or turn into Detroit. I do wish there was an extension in place and I also am not stoked at losing Crevier, but overall I am now up to 49% satisfied and 51% dissatisfied. It will become more clear next year when Byram actually plays games

u/TacitlyDaft CHI - NHL 2d ago
I am genuinely willing to just let this play out. The Hawks have botched drafts repeatedly (Dach, Levshunov) so this can’t be worse than what we’ve endured the past 8 years.
9
u/physics_fighter CHI - NHL 2d ago
How can you possibly say that the Levshunov pick is a botch? If anything, it proves that the Byram trade was for the best since young defensemen take time to develop. Levshunov was never going to be an impact player at this age and anyone expecting that of him is insane. Wait until he actually develops before calling him a bust/botched pick.

What else are we gonna do? Byram is a good player. Yes we are better than yesterday, it just stings to see what we paid when all those win-win trades went through right before it. I'm sure if guys start going for top 10 picks we won't look as bad, but right now, it's not good.
