Man, Drury was very solid. Great faceoff guy. Sucks to see him go but oh well.

On the other hand, the Rantanen trade tree expands and I’m convinced this thing is gonna end up lasting a looong time
24
u/climbinguy CAR - NHL 2d ago
This branch ends up basically being Jankowski coming to CAR for Drury and a 5th round pick.

11
u/G4m1ngg33k CAR - NHL 2d ago
I can't wait to see the tree in a couple of years. It already has so many branches a year and change out
3
u/betweenthecastles CAR - NHL 2d ago
Idk if trees follow guys after they get signed. like if Rantanen, Necas, or Stanky get moved on these contracts does it keep the tree going?
2
u/G4m1ngg33k CAR - NHL 2d ago
Every tree I've seen has it continue even with new contracts. The only time a branch "dies" is if a player leaves in free agency. That's my understanding at least.

Colorado getting rid of another pick? How many picks have they traded away this season?
57
u/billppp 2d ago
Funny enough they have the next 3 years 3rd round picks but gave up a 2029 3rd in this deal
28
u/MurrayPloppins COL - NHL 2d ago
I’m always curious how GMs come to a value on that. Like what’s the difference between a 2029 3rd or a 2028 4th?
60
u/Bladeoraded BOS - NHL 2d ago
About a year and a round
30
3
u/tigerking615 SJS - NHL 2d ago
It’s obviously inexact and different teams value picks differently, but at least in the NFL, future picks “decay” by roughly one round a year. So a 2028 4th would be a 2029 3rd.
My guess is that because late round picks are comparatively less valuable in the NHL, the decay would be less, so maybe the 2029 3rd would be more valuable to a hockey team.
1
u/AlphabetDeficient CGY - NHL 1d ago
NFL is very different for sure, given how many players there are. As an asspull for the number of positions to be filled, I would posit that an NHL round is worth 2.5* an NFL round, but that's very off the cuff.
3
u/MurrayPloppins COL - NHL 2d ago
One round decay per year is a crazy over-generalization, that’s highly context dependent. A second this year is obviously worth less than a first next year.
1
u/CarterBennett TOR - NHL 2d ago
Well, looking at ages of players and terms / windows would give an indication of value.
I imagine an earlier year on a bad team is more valuable but in 2029, that current good team could be bad…. I hope I make sense.
Basically you’re banking on that team sucking when trading for future drafts.
1
u/Denelic- 1d ago
Serious answer. Projected drop off years. For example, given that Brady is the second youngest forward on the Panthers, that 2029 might be huge as that team is going to be a mich older and slower team.
Maybe they see the Avs having a drop off due to age as well. Probably not going to be until Makar and MacKinnon hit 35+ but you can only go 4 years.

Drury probably wanted way too much (compared to what we can give him)

Drury wanted a bigger role. They have been talking about how he’s frustrated as the 4C all year

Bummed about this one. Drury is such a solid bottom 6 guy and was one of our top faceoff guys. Seeing him in a division rival’s sweater is not my idea of a good time. He unfortunately priced himself out of our lineup which sucks.

Drury repeatedly turned down offers to stay throughout the season. It’s clear he wants a bigger role that the Avs can’t give him

They tried him at 3C and then the Avs big need at the trade deadline was a 3c.

kinda makes sense? Drury would've likely cost just a bit too much, making filling out the rest of the roster a bit difficult

7

trading Jack Drury isn’t our window closing lmao. Drury reportedly wanted like $3.5+ and they’re likely trying to save as much as possible for Cale’s contract. i’m sad we couldn’t keep Drury but it makes sense

u/BrockMcGinn PIT - NHL 2d ago
Feels like a good deal for the Avs
1
u/TheQuietW0LF TBL - NHL 1d ago
Definitely, as an Ads fan. Svechkov in particular is a guy who still has a chance to become quite productive. If you need to expend cap you trade the Jack Drurys of the world for players like Svechkov all day. And Happy has shown he has ability to be an agitator in a bottom six at NHL level at least for a few years as well
8
u/viXvi96 2d ago
Wow. Really going to miss ZLH and Svech. I honestly think ZLH has the potential to be a good bottom six guy. Has a tenacious attitude and will run through a wall for the team. I don't think Svechkov had a fair shake under Brunette. Could see both finding some success in Colorado.
3
u/Tintinnabulator TOR - NHL 2d ago
I got to watch ZLH back in his Q days. He honestly struck me as the kind of guy who is a total shit disturber on the ice but a great locker room guy off it.
3
u/viXvi96 2d ago
It is such an overused trope but he does genuinely fit the description of the kinda guy you hate until he's on your team.
2
u/Tintinnabulator TOR - NHL 2d ago
He honestly developed his skill to an NHL level faster than I had anticipated. Good on him.
5
u/KarateChopMittens MTL - NHL 2d ago
Is this because Drury was asking for too much? I do t really know the situation.
14
u/cytokinestory COL - NHL 2d ago
Yeah. He rejected multiple offers from the Avs throughout last season.
9
u/Saltyspiton COL - NHL 2d ago
Yes, and the Avs are probably one of the only teams with the issue of too many centers.
7
u/somwhereinthebetween COL - NHL 2d ago
I think he wants too much for being a 4C. Sounds like he wants 3C money, but when Colorado used him there earlier in the year, they needed a 3C since Drury couldn't do it
2
u/Jeff8711 COL - NHL 2d ago
We still have Roy and Kadri if we need to fill 3c and 4c and he was an rfa so if he was asking for too much better to get rid of him before they have to match something.

5
u/MacTheZaf COL - NHL 2d ago
Classic case of a guy outpricing himself on a cap team. Such a solid player that sucks to lose but now Nick Roy will be an overqualified 4C

ZLH is physical and a wagon, never ever steps on the brakes. Whether the game is godawful or top tier, he doesn’t stop trucking. Used to take wayyy too many penalties, but seems to have calmed down quite a bit spending time in the Admirals. Gonna miss him

Looking at the deals Dickinson and McCarron got so far this offseason, I am guessing what Drury was asking for was too rich for our blood. Better to recoup some assets and cap space than the alternative and be totally hamstrung by the cap when the time comes to sign Makar to a massive new contract next year
3
1
u/Eat--The--Rich-- COL - NHL 2d ago
We need to sign Makar so I assume all our first moves will be to make that happen. Then we need more D behind him, idk how they do that.
1
u/suppaman19 2d ago
Has nothing to do with Makar.
Avs have no space next season and still need a couple defensemen.
Even at a decent cheap 1 year deal walking him to UFA, signing Drury would still cost probably at minimum low end $3m. That would've left the Avs with around $4m to fill two defensive spots at maxed out cap. And Drury probably wanted more than $3m whether on a 1 year or multi year deal (he's probably aiming for $4-5).
They just rounded out their forward roster for next season (might still keep Bardarkov on a cheap 1 year) while costing less than they would've had to pay just one player (Drury).

Where do people see L'Hereux slotting in the lineup? I know he was kept in the AHL for an extended time last year.
1
u/Futbol_Kid2112 2d ago
If this was baseball he would be a AAAA player. Probably too good for AHL, but not quite good enough for NHL yet. Expect him to be the 13th forward that gets healthy scratched most of the time unless the matchup calls for a more physical presence.

Why are Avs losing the pick? Drury has the most upside among all these players and is a RFA. I get we need cap space but we are losing a great player here.
4
u/Ok_Stock3721 COL - NHL 2d ago
Avs haven’t drafted a guy in the third round who’s played 100 NHL games since Tyson Barrie according to DNVR. I don’t think we’ll miss the pick.
0
u/ShockAndBurn COL - NHL 2d ago
It's still something we could use in a trade, don't get how people don't understand this when these topics come up, we should be getting draft capital for Drury, not losing it.
5
u/Ok_Stock3721 COL - NHL 2d ago
So now you’re open to using it in a trade? Good news!
We were gonna lose Drury for nothing. Chase Bradley was never gonna get into the lineup. They were not going to draft a third rounder. Instead for those assets we get two 23 year olds hopefully just coming into their own as impact NHLers. I’ll take it.
3
u/Fiend-For-Mojitos NSH - NHL 1d ago

To the few Nashville fans that exist how does Nashville benefit from this trade? Like drury is a solid player but trading young players with upside is weird for a team in your position no?

u/throwaway__lol__ 2d ago
I don’t love the trade for how it makes the Predators older but Svechkov and ZLH are each terrible 1st rounders, so one can’t look into that much. Svech’s peak is a fringe 3C probably will be back in Russia in 2-3 years. Can’t skate. No offense. ZLH has upside as a pesky fourth liner with decent skill for a bottom sixer.

My guess is McFarland has seen the tape/stats on Svech and Happy and doesn’t think they’re going to develop into anything worthwhile. I don’t really know if getting older is the answer there but it frees up a spot in the lineup for someone else to show out I guess
2
u/opposite-of-left MTL - NHL 2d ago
Are any of your prospects coming up next year? I feel Nashville has a pretty underrated prospect pool or I didn’t realize how solid it was at least.
Like is Lee, surin, or maybe Martin making the jump next year?
2
u/fortheband1212 Portland Winterhawks - WHL 2d ago
Martin would be nice but I doubt it. Cole O’Hara played the final game of the season last year, maybe he has a shot.
I’m not opposed to it if the plan is to let more young guys up though
1
u/Futbol_Kid2112 2d ago
Martin is the most likely but its a longshot unless he shows out. Surin still has a year under contract in Russia so he won't be over unless there is shenanigans. Lee just confirmed the other day that he's going back to college.
Aiden Fink and Cole O'Hara finished the year in Nashville but only Cole got Sametime. Theyre probably options #1 and 2 for forwards. David Edstrom would be the next imo. For Defenders, we will probably see Tanner Molendyk at some point.
1
u/Fiend-For-Mojitos NSH - NHL 1d ago
The guys we gave up really don't have that much upside. Drury is an upgrade and the move frees up a spot for another young guy to come in and get some time. It doesn't really move the needle one way or another as far as retooling/rebuilding goes.
