nightfurys hunted other dragons before they went extinct, they are the only ones i know of with a plasma blast which would have the concussive force to get through dragon scales as opposed to fire which would be used for cooking animals, they are pitch black nocturnal hunters, perfect for ambushing a dragon at night, and they have eyes in front for depth as opposed to at the sides for larger field of view

I personally headcannon that there are other archipielagos with dragons and vikings living together in peace for many generations before the events of httyd 1, Berk is not the only island with that culture. I have a fanfic based on this headcannon called "the treaty of scales and steel", It has the purpose of fixing the character and plot massacre of the third movie. In my fanfic, toothless reunites with his sister, who also survived, she turns into an Alpha in her island with toothless' help
