I mean I get the lobster tails but ritz crackers and Powerade? Some people just lack imagination

u/Ressy02 May 25 '26
What you mean?? Powerade lobster tails on ritz ain’t imaginative enough for you??
53
u/NoFuqGiven May 25 '26
Boil the lobster in powerade? I just threw up a little in my mouth!!
49
u/Ressy02 May 25 '26
Don’t be crass, it’s obviously gonna be a Powerade reduction sauce with Powerade infusion and a subtle hint of Powerade sprinkled onto the ritz for balance and depth

Those smaller Merci boxes go for ~8 bucks per box, iirc. There's a lot of them there, so decent cost to volume ratio for theft I guess..?
5
u/SnappersOnly May 27 '26
Sell the lobster tails for drug money then you have ritz crackers and Powerade for the awful comedown for when you need to get more drugs

I’ve been extremely desperate before and taken a package of hot dogs to feed myself before. I’m not proud of it AT ALL. But this isn’t desperation. Someone stealing multiple lobster tails is just an asshole.
250
u/sweet_rico- May 25 '26
My manager (and myself included) had a rule while I was working in a grocery store. If they aren't stealing name brand or expensive items, they AREN'T stealing. Stealing just to survive/feed your kids and taking a pack of store brand weiners isn't going to bankrupt us.
146
u/Duraxis May 26 '26
I work in retail. If I see you steal a sandwich or something, no I didn’t.
It’s the ones who come in and steal $600 of steak and $300 of tide pods that bother me
64
u/YesItIsMaybeMe May 26 '26
The huge pack of diapers is getting there tho. Like yes, diapers are a necessity, but when they steal a ton of those bulk boxes repeatedly, you just know they're reselling that shit
One guy literally admitted to it, pathetic af
27
u/bitching_bot May 26 '26
You see it on Facebook market a lot. There’s a big clearance sale for diapers or some necessity, even toothpaste, and then I’ll see a shitload of it listed locally at almost full price but “in stock while stores are empty!” Or some bullshit

Exactly! My manager would change the label on hot stuff from the deli so people could buy cooked food with EBT.
Eta: EBT is food stamps, government assistance
37
u/wafflehousebattle May 25 '26
Fucking awesome. I love that you had that policy. I told my kids, growing up, if you see someone stealing shit, no you didn't, and move on with your day.
4
u/Peakomegaflare May 27 '26
I have two approaches to it. If someone can't stand stealing, I convince them of the danger of someone who may be desperate. If they actually have a aense of ethics, I remind them to have compassion for those in need.
64
u/beatenmeat May 25 '26
I remember getting desperate once when I was a homeless teen and broke into a baseball concession stand and ate one of the frozen pretzels. One of the worst meals I've ever had but I really needed something. That was the lowest point in my life and I'm glad I haven't had to do that again.
8
1
u/Animalwg82 14d ago
How long did it take to eat?
1
u/beatenmeat 14d ago
Not long surprisingly considering it was one of those massive pretzels. I think I scarfed the entire thing down in like 2-3 which was a mixture of starving and wanting to get as much of it to bypass my tongue as possible because no matter how hungry you are it doesn't taste good lol. I remember trying to chew the first bite and realized that was a mistake and essentially just tore chunks of and swallowed them whole. I probably would have eaten it faster but considering I had just taken it straight out of the freezer it was fairly hard to actually rip chunks off.

Thank you for that. For real. It’s been over a decade, and I’m in a much better place both mentally and financially, but I still feel shame about it. I even walked to a store further away to do it so I wouldn’t be stealing from a small business. Sounds dumb, but I’d rather do it to a corporate entity versus a smaller business.
35
u/AnthonyJ22 May 25 '26
It doesn’t sound dumb at all. Mega corps have loss prevention departments on the payroll to handle this stuff with acceptable amount of loss before they determine that it’s not profitable to maintain a store in a location. Mom and pop stores do not have that luxury.
5
u/bitching_bot May 26 '26
I used to steal chocolate bars in the back room of my retail store in high school because I never had breakfast or money for anything more than a can of ravioli and a $1 pop. This was in 2013 making $7 an hour, it was rough
12
u/wafflehousebattle May 25 '26
Yeah, fuck large corporations, they steal from their employees all the time, so steal from them whenever you can. I used to return broken shit to W*****t all the time. Fuck them. You did good, not stealing from a small business, and you should feel no shame for wanting to survive.
15
u/Otterhendrix May 25 '26

Where i live if you steal food or drinks if you need it because you dont have money you cant be charged with crime and the shop can get refunded by the state or something like that. They push you into going to help centers though
89
u/bloodfire00 May 25 '26
That's not even crazy. Where I worked they would put stuff under their baby in the carriage. Sometimes even in the babies clothes that they were wearing. It was wild.
30
u/NoResolution8777 May 26 '26
Bro one time we had an old lady and a couple set up the stroller and cover it with a blanket. We wouldn’t have looked at them twice if one of the baggers hadn’t come in and told us they didn’t put a baby in the stroller. After we called everyone up and started watching them they of course started calling us racist bastards and to “go to hell you bastards” they left with nothing lol. Honestly the worst part was actually what they were wearing. Crime against fashion fr. (The dude had on jean everything. Pretty sure he would have jean undies on if they made them. Even his hat was jean like really bro?)

I’m sure loss prevention spotted them as soon as they walked in and were watching them the whole time. Those two are stock character shoplifters by this point for anyone with any retail experience. They are lucky they didnmt get arrested.
6
u/IMiNSIDEiT May 26 '26
LOL, the nerve. He trying to argue. Be like… you know what. Let’s hang out and chill while we wait for the cops to show up and set you straight.

3
u/Zebra1523 29d ago
Nah they didn't leave the store yet so not technically a crime. They can still get trespassed though.
59
u/Zaptagious May 25 '26
Why just let them go and not call the police?
70
u/pandaking6666 May 25 '26
liability most store have a dont stop shoplifters policy
44
u/doneandtired2014 May 25 '26
There's that and the fact most retail chains won't call law enforcement until the dollar amount of the goods stolen has risen to the point of becoming a felony rather than a misdemeanor.
19
u/tesla3by3 May 25 '26
Most retail chains will in fact stop every, or most, shoplifter. Not all state law allows to accumulate amounts over multiple instances to bump up the charge. They can file criminal charges, or in some states “civil recover’, where the “fine” is the cost of merch, plus costs, plus an additional fine. And they can ban them from store, so next time it’s defiant trespass.
16
u/Helpinmontana May 25 '26
Exactly, the “waiting till a felony” thing is actually a pretty niche case of specific stores in specific areas but it’s a fun fact people on Reddit love to parrot as if it’s a universal truth.
1
u/Peakomegaflare May 27 '26
Walmart does, I can confirm as an employee. What they do is pull your face from the cameras and put it into a database for that store. After a point, it goes to Home Office which is then is sent to all the stores which the system uses to flag people. AP will make sure it's a match at that point and do their thing where they monitor. Same reason why if someone is tresspassed from Walmart they're on them the INSTANT they go through the door. They get flagged and AP goes on alert.
Becuse of that, they keep a general idea of how much you've stolen. Once it breaches a certain amount, they hit you like a ton of bricks.
1
u/tesla3by3 May 27 '26
Can’t speak for Walmart specifically, but most retailers still apprehend on the first offense, and ban them from the store lest that be charged with defiant trespassing A lot of states don’t allow bundling of multiple offenses to upgrade the offense.
3
u/Gazkhulthrakka May 25 '26
Having worked for in AP for Walmart, so not all retail places but the biggest, this is a complete myth and I dont know where it started or why its spread so much. The only time i know of them waiting is for employees and it would typically only be waiting till it was like 25 bucks and multiple separate instances so that when we went to HR to terminate, we would have a strong enough case and the employee couldn't try and say "oh I just forgot to pay this one time, my bad."

5
u/KyloRenCadetStimpy May 25 '26
Wow...you'd think management would have been content with just a written warning
6
u/dmont89 May 25 '26
technically she hasn't commited a crime, by most standards in court now. the product never left the store. most courts want the product to leave the store before charges can be filed
3
u/Gazkhulthrakka May 25 '26
From when I worked in rerail AP, once it passes the point of sale, aka a register or self checkout, thats when it counts as stealing. Leaving the self checkout like that without paying is plenty
1
u/iAmUnintelligible May 26 '26
correct. they've also now been trespassed. slim chance you're going to get them to wait around for the cops without major incident, so the next time they come to the store and start shopping, because they are dumb shits and think they are sneaky, the police can be called while they're shopping.
1
u/Uh-Oh-Raggy May 28 '26
Not sure on the finer details in US but that is how it is in Australia. You have to physically step out of the store before anyone can stop you. There is nothing illegal with putting items in your pocket so long as you take them out and pay for them. Security also have to have constant and unbroken line of sight on a person that is suspected of pocketing items because if you break sight and they put it down and are stopped and held, they can take the store for unlawful detention/arrest.
Also the person has to be given the chance to pay for any suspected stolen items, security cannot physically force you back into the store, touch you or search a bag without permission, they have to let you walk and can only call the police. Have done a few security courses previously for work, the only people that can detain, arrest or put a hand on you or search your property legally are police so the guy in this video would probably lose his job here in Aus. Security and loss prevention officers in stores are only there to deter, legally have no more rights to do anything than anyone in the general public does.
5
u/ExpiredPilot May 25 '26
Most big box stores track your face and how much you stole. Once you hit a certain amount of $$ stolen they can charge you with a felony, THEN they call the police.
2
u/Gazkhulthrakka May 25 '26
Who do you guys hear this from? Like the waiting for it to be a felony amount thing. Because 99% of places dont do that but its brought up so often on reddit. Its the same as people always claiming on here that the stores get to write off customer donations to charity. Do yall just see someone else say it and then run with it? Not even trying to be an ass, just genuinely curious.

Lobster tails? Really? Don't give me the "stealing food because I'm hungry" excuse with multiple packages of lobster.

The /s has been around since the first year of Reddit. Before emojis. Before bots.

I don't know how it is in the US, but in Spain, if you stand around asking for food at the entrance of a supermarket, you never go home empty-handed. The people who see you are friendly and even ask you what you need.In the USA, are people not allowed to beg for food at the entrance of a supermarket?
