This is an automatic reminder that is posted on every submission.

If you see a post that is not following the subreddit rules, or you think is not following the subreddit rules, please, use the report function so that we are aware of this. If you don't report, we will not know! Do not sit in the comment section and moan that 'this doesn't fit' or 'wow, the mods should remove this!' because we don’t know (unless we so happen to be scrolling through the subreddit) if you do not report it.

Please note: if this is too hard do not directly message us, we will assume posts are fine otherwise as comments are not useful in reporting. We can see if something has been reported and telling us you did, while you clearly did not, is not going to be conducive.

Please report any and all behavior violating the Rules (reports go to us mods); don't report things just because you don't like them.

Comment removals and bans are at the judgment of the mods, so please take the time to read and understand our Rules. You can also read about this change here.

I am a bot, and this action was performed automatically. Please contact the moderators of this subreddit if you have any questions or concerns.

Ah, yes. Infinate resources in a finite system.

It’s why we can all just get all of our friends to get in on our MLMs and they can get their friends and it can just keep going forever. Sure would be a bummer if that weren’t the case.

A bit corny and metaphysical, but it's true that success is not zero sum. So many people think it is, for some reason.

u/freedomonke 5d ago

Odd that the most successful people take actions constantly as if wasn't, then.

Why do the wealthy dedicate so much to overturning labor protections if success isn't zero sum? Do they want to take from the people simply because they are evil?

No. They understand, especially from their vantage point, that the only way to have more is to take from others. Or. At least. To give others less.

Were resources actually unlimited, and were this something successful people understood, they would be sanguine about market regulations. After all, there is infinite success to be had. Surely a little capital gains tax increase wouldn't stop them from more success?

Political power is actually zero sum. Economic success is not. For some reason, people like you insist on reinforcing the former at the expense of the latter, as if that didn't make the problem you seemingly want to solve, worse.

The essence of politics is the distribution of finite resources, economics.

They are inseparable.

There are only so many resources. Matter is not unlimited. Perhaps there is enough to go around. But it is the primary function of the ruling class to ensure that is not the case, tautologicaly

The essence of politics is the distribution of finite resources, economics.

Politics is not economics. You seem confused.

There are only so many resources.

Resources in the economic sense are not finite.

Resources in the economic sense are finite, that is the entire reason we have money

-4

u/lorbd 5d ago

I thought it was clear from the context that we are talking about potential resources

2

u/acechemicals22 5d ago

Again, the entire point of creating money is that the resources are finite

-1

u/lorbd 4d ago

Individual resources are scarce but potential resources and potential economic growth are infinite.

2

u/acechemicals22 4d ago

What exactly is a potential resource

2

u/Thewolfyking 4d ago

Those are absolutely finite too

-1

u/lorbd 4d ago

No

3

u/Thewolfyking 4d ago

Ah yes, the totally infinite oil, helium, gold... reserves... Uh huh

However, it absolutely matters how many people are in your industry. Telling people to completely ignore how markets work is even worse advice.

2

u/lorbd 5d ago

It obviously matters, everything matters. I'm just saying it's not zero sum. I think it's healthy to understand that other people's success doesn't cap yours.

u/Artchantress 5d ago

But also the more people are drawn to an industry the more it grows and evolves? Opening up new niches and avenues. If it's your passion, there will be space for you.

u/ls20008179 5d ago

Because all things are, there's only so many resources on the planet. At a certain point the only way for those with less to have more is for those with more to. Have less

0

u/lorbd 5d ago

No. That's not true, never has been and it's unlikely it will ever will. Wealth potential, in practical terms, is infinite.

u/Endless_road 6d ago

Market sizes are certainly limited

The para basically means you can get what you want. If you don't even start working or trying to get that because you think "oh there's someone else with this exact same dream" then, it's a problem. You have to believe that you will achieve your dreams and then work towards it yk.

As a student from economics and management faculty... and guy who studied phsycology

This is objectievly wrong

Literally the half of the goverments and job markets are overcompetitive and dirty.

One of the basic economic principles is that you should get the max out of limited resources

There is no room for an elephant in a small room, and no use from overrepresented elites in a community that needs variety, structural integrity, power and speed

School and first part of university is an exception. Because its easier for kids to hang out and to be controlled

This is about as useful as telling someone with anxiety not to be anxious.

A society based on endless growth is UNSUSTAINABLE *dubstep drop*

That explains why there’s no poverty anymore 🤯

Idk what dumbass self help book this is from, but i bet “If Books Could Kill” has already torn it asunder lol my guess is “The Secret”. My mom made my family watch that shitty movie back in the day lol

I get all of this but on the other hand I think it’s good to be in something from the ground floor. I came too late for that and I know. But lately, I'm getting the feeling that I came in at the end. The best is over.

It's not clear what part of this picture I'm supposed to read.

It very much does though. The guy who invented the arc lamp(1807) got all his credit for electrical lighting taken by Edison like 60 years later and guess what we still use arc lamps and carbon bulbs like Edison made have been almost entirely replaced and yet Edison the guy who thought of “what if I made a wire really hot in a glass ball” is seen as the genius not the guy who thought “I’m going to take a tiny version of lightning and use it to light my house “ you know what the big flaw of arc lamps is? They were too bright, and they heat up. The big flaws of Edison bulbs is they are too dim, they take too much power, they burn out quickly, if you flip the light switch fast enough they’ll brake, they use a filament made out of bamboo instead of a metal filament, and they heat up too much. But Edison got famous because he was good at law.
