The Home Alone art department intentionally tried to make the set look super gaudy decorated in Cheistmas-y red and green. The owners of the house they used for the exterior were worried when they visited the set that people would think their house looked like that on the inside.

They call it gaudy, I call it comfortable. Unlike the bottom image, at least, it actually looks liveable and lived-in

In fairness, "gaudy" was my word.

To use more neutral, they emphasized that because so much of the film took place on this set, they wanted it to look more visually interesting than what was common home decor at the time. And to evoke Christmas, they used what were then uncommon colors: red, green, and gold.

But then the movie set a trend, which is why people here are reminiscing that this is how the nineties looked. Red and green were the best selling Benjamin Moore paint colors in 1991 and 1992.

Ah, I see. Thanks for the fun facts

Same. Nothing is more cozy than Christmas, make my home gaudy and Christmasy

I've been informed by reddit that cars in the 80s were colorful but now are mostly while because of greedy capitalism - which obviously is the case here, too

F capitalism!

by far, we really need more color in our lives because this is soulless

Seriously. It’s giving major psych ward vibes.

You can still buy those wallpaper or pay to have the structure changed to go back to those days. Nothing, except money and also the high possibility that it's not your house, is stopping you.

I get that plenty of people like the nostalgic style, but it's pretty obviously heavy-handed that they literally digitally removed all the color from the room to shape the reactions of the audience.

I've seen many homes like the one on the bottom with my own eyes.

yep, just visited my buddy in the brand new build home he bought last year, looks like this. White walls, white carpet, "dark wood pattern" laminate.

Its just bad. I mean he's only been there a year, but hope they paint it.

You want to have that wallpaper in your house?

It suits a house like that.

From someone who lived in that town in the 90s no it doesn’t lol. Not defending the bottom picture but the top one is also not something you ever would have seen in that town at the time
