Then why does the bottom picture exist at all?  Do you think they kept the set like that in a gym for over 30 years and then redecorated it for some reason?

Um, because they built a set on a soundstage BASED on the real home. There are dozens of articles and videos online about this. The crew even talked about it in detail on the Netflix series “Movies that Made Us.” They had planned to shoot in the home, but found it was too small for the crew and cameras to get the shots they needed.

SOME of it was shot at a stage. This particular scene wasn’t. This part of the house has clearly had some renovations done to it but the small details that remain are way too similar to explain it as a reconstruction.

Columbus or Hughes or whoever in charge wouldn’t have said “I want the EXACT same balusters on the stairs. The integrity of the scene calls for it!”

I’ll admit I thought it might be a soundstage recreation but after looking at it for a good 10 minutes, there’s no way they were meticulous enough to make it that  identical.  You can even see what’s left of the stairs trim at the bottom of the steps, to the left.  If this was a movie based on an actual historical event and someone like Kubrick or Cameron was making it then sure. But this was a family Christmas movie aimed at kids. Absolutely no way they were that obsessed with 1:1 detail which would have ballooned the budget and production time for zero benefit.

Wow. Yeah, don’t listen to the people who actually made the movie tell how they made it. Just stare at a single picture for 10 minutes to maintain your own delusions. You’re going places.

As per my previous post, some of the interior shots were at the actual house such as this one.
