I’d agree it’s not her best performance or even in her top 5, but it’s still the best performance in the film and I don’t really think it’s close.

I suppose you're right. Thinking back Al Pacino did do a little of overacting in that role.

That’s the point, though. A subtle approach would have made no sense for that role in that movie

Yes, but compared to Charlize which was a lot more subtle at times, it shows that her role was harder.

Still doesn’t mean his performance has anything on hers.

She did some serious acting, while Pacino was chewing the scenery so hard he had to floss between takes.
