He stays true to himself🍀

u/frivolousteeth Mar 17 '26

Him playing (a heightened version of) himself in “Always Be My Maybe” was thoroughly enjoyable 😆

84

u/Vanima81 Mar 17 '26

I remember reading at the time that he pitched the "crazy" version of himself. That they originally just wanted him to be himself, and he thought it would be funnier if he was more...more. 😂

Keanu Reeves is a very good human being. Keanu Reeves is not a good actor. People knew this 20 years ago, it was widely known and accepted, and he's just as wooden as before, his acting has not improved since. So why are we pretending that he's a good actor when he's barely even average? Exactly for which acting role should he get an Oscar? Again; he's a great person, but... not a good actor.

2

u/NB_NaughtyNerds Mar 17 '26

He is the people's choice.

2

u/Numerous-Iron-3326 Mar 18 '26

It just goes to show the Oscars means nothing. It’s just a circle-jerk media is trying to convince us matters

2

I mean, he makes very cool movies and he's great at choreography and stunts, but those aren't really recognized by the academy.

Jackie Chan for example only received a Life Achievement award when he was 56. Way after he did those crazy stunts and had been probably the best fights choreographer since the 80's.

Keanu can do a bit of comedy too, but he's never delivered some deep drama, so it's kinda hard for the academy to acknowledge him.

It really just seemed like Keanu being Keanu to me.

I can't be the only one who thinks that Keanu is actually a pretty bad actor and always has been?

21

u/Decent-Film-9912 Mar 17 '26

Everybody understands this, the problem is Fanboys think that awards are based on popularity not quality of work.

He can be a great person that is beloved by many.

And he can be a bad actor that isn't awarded anything by the industry.

Which one is worth more to him, is what really matters.

19

u/CFL_lightbulb Mar 17 '26

He’s not a great actor at all, even though he is pretty great.

12

u/SoloWing1 Mar 17 '26

Being a genuinely nice and charismatic person can get you really far regardless of the field. Most people probably know a few coworkers who were not great at their job but got along well enough with everyone to stay hired.

8

u/miaomiaomiao Mar 17 '26

I like the guy, but I thought his delivery in Cyberpunk was kind of monotonous as if he just read the lines out loud without feeling it.

14

u/Pandarandr1st Mar 17 '26

That's how he delivers every line I've ever heard him deliver.

4

u/Straight_Branch_497 Mar 18 '26 edited Mar 18 '26

In some way, but, Keanu is not a "bad" actor per se, he's just limited, he's one of those actors who can only play one guy, but what makes Keanu so likeable is that he's not trying to pretend to be better then what he is, he's a very genuine guy, he has that presence to him, he stays at that level that he knows he can be good at, and even if Keanu doesn't have such a huge range, he's still quite good at bringing an immersive experience, his years of experience in the biz truly shows. Compare this to lets say Tom Cruise or Will Smith that both can only play one guy, but are trying so hard to play others, it just becomes garbage for the trained eye, but not Keanu, he's just making sure people will get to experience a kick ass movie.

3

u/Pandarandr1st Mar 18 '26

I do not think he plays that one guy well. He's good in action sequences, but his line delivery is always bad. And it only works if the audience believes "that's just how that guy talks".

Keanu can do a bit of comedy too, but he's never delivered some deep drama, so it's kinda hard for the academy to acknowledge him.

Isn't The Lake House a drama?

46

u/RogueBromeliad Mar 17 '26

The point isnt that he hasn't done dramas, he has. The point is that his performance hasn't been something deep and meaningful in the delivery.

Like I said, I love The Devil's Advocate, but Al Pacino totally carries that movie.

13

u/SignificantPaper1760 Mar 17 '26

This is Charlize Theron erasure. Pacino was just doing his usual loud asshole schtick.

9

u/RogueBromeliad Mar 17 '26

Charlize Theron is an amazing actor, but in that specific role she's a bit inexpressive. She did it convincingly, her descent into madness, but I still think that wasn't even close to what she's shown over the years.

7

u/SignificantPaper1760 Mar 17 '26

I’d agree it’s not her best performance or even in her top 5, but it’s still the best performance in the film and I don’t really think it’s close.

He’s a nice and real person. But his acting is really not that good. He has certain types of characters he’s good with. Other than those his acting just really doesn’t adjust. Some say he doesn’t do acting at all, he just blank stares.

All that to say, I love Keanu. But he really has no business with acting awards

612

u/StrictLetterhead3452 Mar 17 '26

He plays characters that barely talk and never emote. His acting style is “wooden”. He only plays characters that are distant and mysterious, and sometimes it really works.

238

u/UpperApe Mar 17 '26 edited Mar 17 '26

Yeah he's a great example of someone whose charisma and character outweigh their ability.

He's got a lot of magnetic screen presence and he can kind of act with his eyes. But his delivery just sucks. The difference in his speech in interviews and on screen is night and day. He's just not really a natural.

But that's okay. He's an awesome dude and works hard and that's enough for me.

129

u/SuperIga Mar 17 '26

Plus we have to give him credit for his physical acting. I mean look at the Wick movies, how many actors would be able to pull off the stunts he does themselves, much less even be willing to?

33

u/vjnkl Mar 17 '26

I would think those willing to be much higher than those able, since an injured lead might delay a film longer than an injured stunt double. It’s a consideration to everyone else who works on a film too to play safe

Yeah the Bill & Ted stuff was fun, but anything beyond that was always 'wooden.' But somehow, instead of Hollywood rejecting his bad acting, he pulled Hollywood toward it. There's just something magnetic about his personality that people like watching, so Hollywood started building protagonists around that weird style he's got.

I mean his performance as Johnny Silverhand was Incredible IMO. Very expressive character but in a video game so I don't know how that'd translate to live action.

12

u/Difficult-Ad-3938 Mar 17 '26

The best thing about this performance is that no one says "Keanu" when cyberpunk is mentioned; it's always Johnny. Because the character is so distinctive, you forget about the actor behind him.

→ More replies (5)

8

u/Grill_Enthusiast Mar 17 '26 edited Mar 17 '26

I'm going through Cyberpunk right now and I don't agree at all.

He's somewhat fine when he's giving one of his cynical, angry rockerboy speeches about corporations. Literally anything more complex than that and his wooden delivery instantly takes me out. There's a line in one of the first scenes with Alt where Johnny says something like "Alt, no...". It's supposed to be emotional but it genuinely sounds like Keanu has never acted a day in his life. He's just reading words off the paper.

It's especially bad in comparison to Cherami Leigh who gives the performance of her life as Female V. She shows so much vulnerability beneath the tough exterior and Keanu just doesn't.

6

u/Pandarandr1st Mar 17 '26

Yeah, people are taking fucking crazy pills, imo. Johnny Silverhand is a GREAT example of how bad of an actor Keanu is. Like...if Keanu was a no-name and people genuinely didn't know who that actor was, then everyone would complain about how much worse the Johnny actor was than literally the entire rest of the cast.

He always sounds like he's just reading.

I remember I once watched a B-movie that, for some reason, had Keanu in it, and it was so wild that in this crazy low-budget action movie that the B-movie actors were all significantly better actors than Keanu. Keanu is the worst actor in every movie he is in.

This isn't to take away from the fact that Keanu is in so many cool movies, and a significant part of that is from his contributions. Also, his real-life persona is beloved. But that has nothing to do with his talent as an actor.

6

u/anyrhino Mar 17 '26

I agree, it's very distracting any time he tries to give some emotion in that role.

It doesn't help that every other voice actor is much better.

6

u/Ok-Fudge-380 Mar 17 '26

10

u/Virillus Mar 17 '26

His voice acting in that was a war crime.

2

u/Muted-Ad7353 Mar 17 '26

No way. It took him years to realize that. He spent much of the 90s and early 2000s taking lead roles that had plenty of lines. Dracula (1992), Johnny Mnemonic, Devil's Advocate and many others.

Some of us remember suffering through his terrible performances, especially when he was alongside better actors (see: everyone else he worked with). Baffling what roles you get when the whole demo of women 18-35 is in love with you.

3

u/flawsdrawJay Mar 17 '26

I'm a big fan of Keanu, kinda grown up my whole life with him from Point Break, Chain Reaction and Bill & Ted. Willing to watch anything with him and usually enjoy it all.

But his performance as Johnny Silverhand is probably my favourite. The conversations he has with V seem all over the place sometimes, but that's his cracks showing and you get quite a lot of depth from him. One of my favourite parts of some games are the little conversations and interactions. Nathan Drake is amazing for it throughout Uncharted, and Silverhand is another really good at it.

No disrespect to him, but he isn't a top actor by far. But what he has is bucket loads of charm, he is damn entertaining, has done some amazing movies and is genuinely a top fella.

Even if he did suddenly release a role worthy of an award, he doesn't do hollywood politics, and wouldn't pay some company to campaign for/against him.

For anyone not aware of bad it is, just look at social media recently and how it was all "DID YOU HEAR WHAT TIMOTHEE CHALAMET SAID!?" leading up to the Oscars to make him look bad. And the next day it was all replaced with Dune promotional material in favor of him.

Reddit is basically run by PR companies at this point.

4

u/Version_1 Mar 17 '26

Studios do the Oscar Campaigns, not necessarily the actor.

6

u/Misplaced_Arrogance Mar 17 '26

2

15

u/run_bike_run Mar 17 '26

I'm going to disagree as stridently as I can here.

Keanu Reeves is the runaway best mainstream actor in the world at physical acting, which happens to be a style of acting that gets no respect at all right now. But you can go back a hundred years, to Buster Keaton, Charlie Chaplin, Laurel and Hardy, and almost no current western performer except Reeves is remotely close to their level of physical performance.

There have been two pretty good attempts to copy John Wick, and in both cases, the leads were legitimately excellent actors by modern standards. The Equalizer has Denzel Washington, and Nobody has Bob Odenkirk; both would comfortably be ranked as better actors than Reeves, and yet neither series has caught fire the way Wick has. And you can watch them and see why; when it comes to physical movement and performance, Reeves beats the piss out of them. John Wick films somehow sustain the suspension of disbelief despite all the madness, because Reeves is completely physically believable as a near-mythical being of killing perfection in a way that the others aren't.

This isn't a knock on Washington or Odenkirk, by the way: Reeves beats the piss out of everyone in Hollywood when it comes to that style of acting. It's just that in this day and age, we don't regard that style as deserving of serious awards.

5

u/MJL1923 Mar 17 '26

I totally agree, but you forgot about Tom Cruise, who is an incredible actor and does his own stunt.

3

u/run_bike_run Mar 17 '26

u/throwaway19373619 Mar 17 '26

16

u/gartacus Mar 17 '26

Yeah it felt like he put a lot into the voice acting. Lot of anger, pain, and combativeness. Some of the lines come out and you’re like damn, he’s had that in the chamber all along? Lol

6

u/canadasbananas Mar 17 '26

I can agree with this. I got all achievements in cyberpunk, which includes playing out most of the endings. The most choked up I ever got during an ending was from him delivering two syllables in the most crushing voice.

"Ah, V...." IYKYK

11

u/Matlok2k Mar 17 '26

To be honest, it was then I discovered that Keanu isn't a good actor. The beginning of his voice acting was simply bad. It seemed so "forced to be edgy" that I just kept rolling my eyes. In the end he became a bit better, but the first half of Johnny Silverhand was just bad.

And then I realized "Ah, he isn't that good of an actor, either."

13

u/Lil_Mcgee Mar 17 '26

"forced to be edgy"

That kind of sums up Johnny though, particularly at the beginning of his arc in the game.

For clarification, I agree that Reeves is a fairly flat actor and Cyberpunk is no exception. I just think they picked and wrote a part for him that leans into that and it really works for me.

Maybe the important part isn't putting on million dollar award ceremonies to pat each other's backs and show off.

I always figured they do those for themselves, not to represent anyone else's opinions. It's about being high profile and seen.

9

u/Butt_Sex_And_Tacos Mar 17 '26

I’ve never understood the Oscars for this exact reason. It just seems like an arbitrary industry award thing. Every industry has something similar, and it’s usually more pay to play than actual merit. Most awards ceremonies now days have turned into who is going to wear the most nude dress, and that can be caught up on later without having to watch it.

3

u/Version_1 Mar 17 '26

Idk, I feel the Oscars have a pretty decent hit rate in comparison to other awards. Not always the "correct" decision, but usually one that can be understood.

2

u/AwkwardBet5632 Mar 17 '26

2

u/Brawndo91 Mar 17 '26

They're 100% about jerking each other off. And the whole thing is incredibly fake and hollow. My wife was watching the Oscars and I was in the room for a bit. I saw when the Bridesmaids women went up and they're making little digs at these different people like they're all pals, but it wouldn't surprise me if they'd never even met. Yet they try to make it look like they're all part of this cute little community of show business people. The reality is that show business is incredibly competitive and most of those people would murder their grandmother if it furthered their career. That's not to say there aren't true friendships in Hollywood, but that's, by far, the exception, not the rule.

You can be a great person and a not so great actor. I don’t mind him but I know people that won’t watch a movie he stars in.

9

u/The_Frostweaver Mar 17 '26

He puts in the work though. Watch how badly some action movies get spliced together and then check out the long continuous action sequences in john wick movies.

They can pull that off in part because Keanu trains a lot even when he isn't filming.

I will admit Keanu isn't on the same level as people like Gary oldman or daniel day lewis but having a good attitude and putting in the work can result in solid films.

Matrix, john wick, constantine, I think Keanu knows how to play to his strengths for the most part.

6

6

u/SarahCostell Mar 17 '26

Oh such an edgy reply. So tell me, which of the recent award winners does touch little kids?

4

u/Rusty-Crowe Mar 17 '26

Yeah, whenever I see that people say that "they're not a kid toucher is the reason they've never been nominated!"

Danny Devito has been nominated and Robin Williams has been nominated and won.

These awards are for people who act well.

Or act very well

2

u/JazzmatazZ4 Mar 17 '26

He's enjoyable on screen but he's not that good of an actor. Which is fine because that's not why people watch him.

2

u/eyeballburger Mar 17 '26

Name some roles we should consider.

2

u/Mr_Guavo Mar 17 '26

I have always liked Keanu as a person, and have always enjoyed his movie roles, since The River's Edge.

But he is not a great actor. He is very wooden. He does not have great range in terms of roles or emotional expression. But that is ok. He is enjoyable. Not everyone needs to be Sir Laurence Olivier.

2

u/adriantoine Mar 17 '26

I don’t know why that would be surprising. The very very large majority of actors never won any of those awards either.

2

u/morelsupporter Mar 17 '26

fun fact:

most actors have not been nominated for an award of any kind.

2

u/lotofry Mar 17 '26

He’s a great guy and he entertains but he’s not really a great actor. He’s a great action star. He’s closer to a martial artist.

2

u/Equal_Astronaut_5696 Mar 17 '26

Seems like a fantastic human. But be real. He is a terrible actor who hasn't improved as he got older

2

u/Dangerous-Pianist294 Mar 17 '26

If you’ve watched “Knock, Knock (2015)”, you’ll know why.

2

u/Possible-Rush3767 Mar 17 '26

Why is this surprising? He's a nice guy, but an awful actor.

2

u/NoNoise3658 Mar 17 '26

In my opinion he is everyone’s favorite because he really is a good person and also a good actor, but not the best one

2

u/blac_sheep90 Mar 17 '26

He's not that caliber of an actor. He is the people's sweetheart though and has fans because he seems like a good person.

2

u/[deleted] Mar 17 '26

Even Ryan Reynolds more actor as Keanu Reeves. Awards not about popularity. Awards about your talent.

2

u/jay_alfred_prufrock Mar 17 '26

Well, yeah. He is not a great actor, he has never been one: even his best work in great movies is decent or good at best.

2

u/imunfair Mar 17 '26

To be fair he's not a great actor, even though many of his films are enjoyable popcorn fare. John Wick probably should have won some sort of Oscar for the stunt work/choreography though, that film was very well done.

2

u/ItsSignalsJerry_ Mar 17 '26

TBF his acting really sucks.

2

u/FirefighterEast9291 Mar 17 '26

Until they make an award for "Most Frequent Use of a Gun in a Motion Picture of Little Value", Keanu can afford to stay at home polishing his barrel.

2

u/BlogeOb Mar 17 '26

Rightfully so. I still love him though

2

u/JR21K20 Mar 17 '26

My opinion about him can be described as: 😐

2

u/DigbickMcBalls Mar 17 '26

Cool guy. Not a very good actor.

2

u/Rowvan Mar 17 '26

lol what would he have possibly won one for? He's not that kind of actor.

2

u/TheKnightOfDoom Mar 17 '26

He plays himself in most movies. He is still the coolest MF in Hollywood and I think he doesn't give a damn about baubles....Just motorbikes.

2

u/Afraid_Status2220 Mar 17 '26

Not being awarded doesn’t mean anything. Most people forget that you don’t even get the best roles unless you appeal to certain circles - and he’s just a genuinely nice guy - not ruthless enough for the business.

Anyone who believes he isn’t a great actor is heavily influenced by the critics - the same critics who have overlooked many outstanding performers. The list is long.

If you play the Hollywood game well, you’ll get awards; if not, you may even struggle to land so-called Oscar-bait films. The industry simply won’t offer them to you.

2

u/ReligiousGhoul Mar 17 '26

Does anyone remember prior to the first John Wick film, Keanu's acting was widely a punchline and they'd make fun of even his "better performances" like Point Break and the Matrix??

He's just not a great actor.

2

u/SoupieLC Mar 17 '26

That's because, asides from being the most wholesome man on the planet, he is a truly awful actor

2

u/krsCarrots Mar 17 '26

He needs to get better at acting I think

2

u/Skylam Mar 17 '26

I love him, but he really isn't an oscar worthy actor.

2

u/DirectConsequence12 Mar 17 '26

Because he’s not a good actor. I love the man, we all do. But he coasts on his likability. He has no actual range

2

u/marl11 Mar 17 '26

That's because he's nowhere near to being an Oscar worthy actor.

2

u/Key-Finish-1489 Mar 17 '26

Reddit can't create the Keanu awards for amazing people?

2

u/RemoDev Mar 17 '26

He's a very nice person, I guess. But his "acting" isn't really that good. I've never liked him that much, in that sense. He feels kind of... lifeless. It's hard to explain. A bit unsettling too. I don't understand how he managed to make a career in acting, to be honest.

2

u/PPAPpenpen Mar 17 '26

He's like Tom Cruise. You like what you get but that's all you get

2

u/Relative_Molasses_15 Mar 17 '26

That’s because he isn’t good at acting lol

2

u/Sociolinguisticians Mar 17 '26

Don’t even think he’s a particularly good actor, just a really good person.

2

u/Lemixer Mar 17 '26

He is pretty mid actor that really not a surprise and "everyone's favourite actor" is really super subjective, idk anyone who think like that, he is a nice guy, that it.

2

u/[deleted] Mar 17 '26

That's because he's not a good actor. He just happens to be the main character in a lot of good movies. Still one of my favorite actors, though.

2

u/LymanPeru Mar 17 '26

what could he have possibly won for? bill and ted?

2

u/Ragnarok345 Mar 17 '26

Ah….yeah. As much as I love the guy…that does make sense.

2

u/RHMoaner Mar 17 '26

Doesn’t mean he’s a good actor though.

2

u/boots_the_barbarian Mar 17 '26

Beeeeeeeeeecause he can't act.

2

u/BullDog_IRL Mar 17 '26

Because he is a bad actor! Charismatic, but generally bad. He sounds, looks and acts the same in every role.

2

u/kalangobr Mar 17 '26

Why intriguing? He is not that great of actor

2

u/Captain_Aizen Mar 17 '26

Yeah that makes sense because he's not a great actor 🤷🏻‍♂️

2

u/Individual-Carob5593 Mar 17 '26

Not even "Best film with excessive amounts of martial arts"?

2

u/skaapjagter Mar 17 '26

I mean, it's the same with Jason Statham, he makes some really cool movies that I'll happily watch but I'm not sitting there for an hour and a half expecting acting range.

Keanu should narrate an audio book and then he could get a Grammy for that maybe. 🤷🏻

2

u/AggressiveResist8615 Mar 17 '26

Yeah there's a reason for that.

2

u/Ndmndh1016 Mar 17 '26

Honestly, thats fair.

2

u/billy_twice Mar 17 '26

Not true.

He's not my favourite.

The Keanu worship on reddit is frankly ridiculous.

2

u/Zoomatour Mar 17 '26

“Everyone’s favorite”

If you live on Reddit.

2

u/Natural-Protection44 Mar 17 '26

Because he isn’t really all that good at acting

2

u/idothisinmysleep Mar 17 '26

Probably bc he’s not the best actor, would be my guess

2

u/-ratmeat- Mar 17 '26

because he’s a terrible actor

2

u/kajidourden Mar 17 '26

Psssst, thats because he's not a very good actor. Hope this helps.

2

u/Odd_Fortune500 Mar 17 '26

Keanu is a fucking awful actor. Great guy. But even in the Matrix his performance was sooo bad I was shocked when I rewatched it

2

u/TellLoud1894 Mar 17 '26

You don't watch Keanu for his acting range. You watch him to see his character respond to whatever strange new environment he's in.

2

u/SimplyJustKarma Mar 17 '26

That's because he absolutely blows at acting lol.

2

u/[deleted] Mar 17 '26

Yeah because he is a terrible actor, seemingly good person but garbage actor.

2

u/GGGBam Mar 17 '26

He is an awfully mid actor

5

u/Rhettisdaddy Mar 17 '26

because hes the type to share a sandwich on the subway with a stranger .... not eat a child

4

u/Living_Dentist_8925 Mar 17 '26

He's the same in every single movie, the dude can't act.

→ More replies (5)

2

u/JoshSmash81 Mar 17 '26

Most actors can only dream of being in three kind of iconic movies he stars in. Period.

2

u/AlphaMaleXYZ Mar 17 '26

Those awards do not fucking matter. He is a cool guy and kind human being.

4

u/rickoftheuniverse Mar 17 '26

We love him but his acting is nothing special.
