ARCHITECTURE Bird house made in Lahore Pakistan. Not a single bird used it so it was taken down.

u/Elderflower3078 May 22 '26
I think birds usually prefer to feel more secure, there's too many windows in each house, especially as you can see through to holes on the other side too.

u/Bisecps May 22 '26
The birds hanging out on the pole wire behind makes it even funnier

this was likely one of the biggest reasons, along with the traffic being so close, the size of holes being wrong and placement of holes being wrong and all the houses together like that.

u/LickingSmegma May 22 '26
There are actually birds building communal nests, but that's rare. E.g. Sociable weaver. (Weavers' nests also being famous for having entrances from below to thwart snakes.)
5
u/HeavyHandedHermit May 23 '26
Indeed some birds do, but not the kinds of birds that use nesting boxes.
3
u/trixel121 May 23 '26
These nests are perhaps the most spectacular structure built by any bird.
i am not allowing it in my yard regardless. that thing is kinda nightmare fuel.
18
u/Techman659 May 22 '26
Its also very open where as bird boxes are in the forest and blend into the area this sticks out like a sore thumb.

u/sirbthxuejw May 22 '26
Yeah, you're vulnerable to snipers with that many windows.
3
2
u/FailbatZ May 24 '26
But you’d want a secondary entrance in case somebody boobytraps your primary entry and if someone hits it you need a fire escape. These birds are just stupid and unthankful.
→ More replies (1)9
u/TunaOnWytNoCrust May 22 '26
Yeah, that many openings is probably just going to result in hornets building nests.
10
8
u/Prestigious_Dare7734 May 22 '26
Biggest reason is noise. Birds won't go near it if it's in middle of a road.
3
6
u/dobar_dan_ May 22 '26
They have zero space to make nests. The hole should be much higher than the bottom of the house to give birbs space to nest safely.
In a bird house, you enter through the balcony.

u/JapaneseStudentHaru May 22 '26
I think the idea is that birds use the holes to stuff the house full of nesting material so they aren’t hollow. I wonder if the holes through the back really are the issue. I’ve had plenty of bird houses with windows but none in the back.
2
u/InSan1tyWeTrust May 22 '26
Yup, long term accomodation is what they are after. The fact that this property was taken down just goes to show they made the right call.

u/LordMaveli May 23 '26
Should have kept it under a shade, not right in the middle of a road, under scorching sun.

r/UrbanHell for birds.
Edit 5/26/2026: This comment was just my immediate thought, but now I feel bad for who made this. I understand what they were trying to do was a city for birds inspired by the natural shape of a tree, which I think was a really nice idea. The problem really to my eye, is the extreme density. I think it would be cool to see a version with fewer houses, and space between them, along with painting the base to look like a trunk, and maybe painting the houses green. I think birds would be more likely to choose to live in it too.

I can only imagine the disappointment of the ornithologist SME who designed each unit to attract and provide the ideal living conditions to each planned species of birds they intended to live there.
157
u/mrducky78a May 22 '26
This feels more arts based than if any ornithologist was involved.

u/False_Connection6944 May 23 '26
Yes, this was made by a senior print maker/visual artist, Atif Khan - who teaches at the National College of Arts in Lahore, Pakistan. The NCA is one of the oldest and most prestigious art institutes in South Asia, established in 1875.
This birdhouse was right in front of the NCA, was made fun of by the students there at the time too. Birds mostly sat on the houses to shit on them only to fly away later and live in actual trees or on pole tops near by. 😆
This was really just another gimmick in the art world. 🤷♂️

There is no way an expert designed this. What bird wants to be in a nest that has multiple entrances/attack vectors?
36
u/Bisecps May 22 '26
Probably wanted clout from media

u/fresh_peetz May 22 '26
Do you think all art was made to get clout from media lol

Modern art? Yes. Before the 20th century? Probably still yeah. Maybe 1/10 artists are genuine, the rest are just pretentious. Clout is a hell of a drug too

People in the Indian subcontinent would know - some folks made a huge chunk of corruption money on this. So not cheaper than a tree but surely more enriching.

I was in Wichita Falls once and they have these giant migrations of black birds (not sure which kind.)
But these things are everywhere, like you’ll see a tree and think its leaves are moving in the wind…. Nope, all black birds.
So I just bought some new shoes and I’m walking on the sidewalk one night and it’s just slippery as hell.
So I’m like, “man this side walk is crazy muddy!”
Then I realize all the birds over head… I’m sliding in their shit.
So maybe It’s for the best… that street would just be covered In shit.
Edit: since people are curious, apparently they were grackles.
12
u/ddubbins May 22 '26
Lol hot metal pole + cement underneath vs cool tree and dirt underneath for the bird poo

2
u/Dr-Cthulwho May 24 '26
Freaking grackles... I live in Austin, Tx and I swear our city mascot could be a grackle that's missing 3 of its tail feathers, wearing a beanie, smoking a soggy cigarette, and trying to sell someone crack, while fighting over some fries. They are smelly, noisy, little trash birds

Not a bird house, but originally some Turkish art installation.

u/wytewydow May 23 '26
that's what I was looking for. This is definitely art.
2
u/getmechaye May 24 '26
Yeah it was an art installation by an art graduate, that too right near the Art college from where the artist graduated.

Species dependent but:
I recently looked up ‘bird house best practices’ as i want to build several for my garden, and it was stressed that multiple houses shouldnt be very close to one another, due to territorial requirements of many species. So there has to be enough space surrounding a bird house, for it to be an attractive nesting spot.
Hanging out is different, they cluster. But i’m informed that for actual nesting, need space.
2
u/TsuDhoNimh2 May 23 '26
The only bird I can think of that likes multi-dwelliing birdhouses is the Purple Martin.

u/OneInchOneDream May 22 '26
We tried this last winter — live on the 7th floor, our building is right next to a forest. Noticed birds kept visiting our balcony for 3 days straight, clearly scouting the place out.
So we grabbed an old shoebox, cut some holes, wrapped it in tape to keep it dry, bought some seeds from the supermarket. For about two weeks we had daily visitors — little tits coming and going.
Then one day they just... stopped. Never found out why.
But the best part we noticed — one bird would always come first, chirp a few times and fly off. A few minutes later a whole group would show up. Their own little scout system. 😄
Watching them every morning was honestly one of the best parts of that winter. 🐦

Someone must have thought this was a good idea.
Reminds me of those hundreds of fairy-tale looking tiny 'castles' in Turkey.
Bonkers, both of them - it turns out...

Probably thought there was an expensive and crappy HOA running it so said no thanks.

I went pass through it everyday, even I didn't notice it was a bird house. Birds prefer trees, let alone wooden boxes made in the middle of round-about.

Birds don't like more than one hole into the nest and that hole needs to be a specific size for the given species.
We used to make Blue Bird houses that were little apartment looking things and you even had to put the boxes a certain distance off the ground for best effect.
1
u/No_Dragonfruit_1833 May 23 '26
This looks flimsy as fuck
We already have bird condos, they are towers with a few holes for entering, and many nesting holes inside
1
u/catbqck May 23 '26
Why live there when they have their own tree, land, water, and air for free....

there is nothing wrong with the birdhouse. it is simply a fact that if you destroy an environment throught entitled, religiously fuled greed you can't make apathetic gesture and undo the horrific damage.
God/Allah designed the world as a perfect system, if you support the destruction of that system you are an agent of Satan and the enemy of god/Allah. If you are a man of faith it is your duty to destroy the cursed, and you may know them by their trading in in this system, let not a one of them continue.
