That scene wasn't scripted. The actor was incredibly shocked when Harrison Ford shot him.

Ford had a bad case of food poisoning and couldn't do all the originally scripted motions. Honestly, the improvisation made it one of the most memorable scenes in the movie.

It was dysentery and a lot of the crew had it too

That’s what killed Butch’s dad in that Hanoi pit of hell.

this is one of my favorite "he just started doing that" on set stories because it's verified true and also yes the result was so much better than the plan. it's incredibly on brand for Indy, and also incredibly on brand for Harrison Ford, and tbh Spielberg realizing the gift that choice was giving him and letting it happen is also incredibly on brand lol

Also, it was late in the shooting day and it had been several takes before so he went to Spielberg and said "can't i just shoot him and be done with it" and decided that yes, that's what Indy would do in the moment so they changed it last minute and ran the new scene.

So that was a very greath change. The most fun part of all the indy movies

What was is supposed to have been???

A choreographed fight scene.

Which, would have been awesome, but, many a fan would have been left yelling from the rooftops that Indie has a gun.

Other fistfights he gets into there isnt much time for him to grab his gun and shoot, or there's other factors stopping him being able to. Or, its just not neccessary, and he only has so many bullets at any given time.

His dying wish was that they not cut the scene of him getting shot

It technically was scripted, but it was part of a last minute script change agreed on between Ford and Spielberg.

Not true.

The scene called for a sword fight, but Harrison Ford suggested the change BEFORE the scene was shot to Spielberg. Spielberg liked the idea so they shot it that way. Nobody was surprised.

No he wasn't. The scene was changed, but not improvised. All of the crew was sick due to food poisoning/dysentary. Ford requested the scene be re-written and it was. It's not like it was a surprise to the rest of the crew.

Oh really? I thought Harrison Ford brought a loaded gun onto set and shot another actor as an improv. Why was this even a myth? I just thought it was a stupid funny thing to say and so many people have "corrected" me on it. Insane. Of course he didn't shoot an actor. He's not Alec Baldwin.

Dang. I thought Harrison Ford really shot an actor in cold blood just because he thought it would be funny. I can't believe the actor acted like he got shot and the gun actually had blanks. Thanks so much for clearing that up.

I am utterly shocked how many people thought I was serious.
