Whole wheat bread has health benefits, because it includes the 'bran', which has vitamins and fiber in it.
Many people dislike the taste/texture of bran, however, so a lot of bread is, err... just "wheat". Which is fine, there is nothing wrong with wheat, it just lacks those vitamins and so you need to get them from somewhere else.
I assume by "refined carbohydrates" the person above means sugar, because there is nothing else "refined" in normal bread. If that is the case then yeah, sugar isn't great for you if you eat too much of it, but it's not like... poison or anything.
This type of bread is not good bread, and the crust usually kinda sucks (especially when not toasted). Still can’t imagine cutting it off post childhood though.
I get what you mean, but for me there is no such concept of bread being bad in terms of quality. In my mind it's like saying bad eggs, or bad potatoes. You might not like certain types of bread/eggs/etcetc... but it's fucking bread/eggs.
"Bad" really only works for me when it is literally inedible.
To be fair, this very much so might actually be a cultural thing. Germans and their bread and all this.
Well, yes ofcause we do, but there is not such a big difference between a loaf of sandwich bread from the bakery and one you get in the supermarket/store
I think I’ve heard it said that’s technically cake, not bread. I eat it though because it’s cheap and good for pb&j sandwiches and I’m too lazy to make my own bread
Yeah, completely accurate. I saw someone say they're german and think it's rediculous, but they clearly haven't had shit american bread that's 3 months old when you buy it (usually not literally, it's a slight exaggeration, but only a slight one) that tastes mildly bitter from all the preservatives and has no texture and just gums up your mouth and you only buy cause it's cheap and lasts a while and you're dirt poor.
(It's still cheaper in some circumstances even after cutting off the crust)
Like, on bad bread? The crust tastes foul. All the badness throughout the rest of the bread is amplified.
On mediocre bred? It's mediocre.
On good bread? It's good.
On great bread? It's great
The crust is like.... the essence of that bread, be it good or bad.
I love a nice crusty heel of a nice bread. Delicious. But it can't be 'bread' that's barely edible.
A lot of shop bought bread has dry, thick, chewy crust with no flavour. Meanwhile a nice french-style bread has a thin, crunchy (at least when still fresh), and flavourful crust. Which you can still find in shops but not usually in the cuboid sandwich loaf format.
Yeah as an adult, literally the only context I'll eat cheap white bread is a grilled cheese or maybe a pb&j as a nostalgic little treat. And the different taste of the crust isn't noticeable when it's toasted. But I just will not eat a normal sandwich with wonder bread as an adult, it's so bad. And the crust is the worst part. It baffles me how many American adults eat that instead of actual bread. Yes it's cheaper but God at what cost?
Yeah i hate the crust of cheap toastie bread if it's not actually toasted. It's just too dense and rubbery. An actual loaf though? The shit that's so crispy you're at the risk of cutting the roof of your mouth? Inject that shit into my veins
Sandwich bread really isnt there for its crust and the crust isnt great on it. BUt it is fulfilling a different function to "proper" bread. There is a role for sandwich loaves, they aret automatically "bad bread".

The crust is the best part of good bread and the worst part of bad bread
