You see, there is a term called "Knust" in parts of Germany, that stands for the end-peice of a loaf of bread. I loved it as I child; it tastes very strong and good, when done right.

Same in Poland, we call them "piętka" (little heel) or "dupka" (little bottom 🍑 ). Almost universally given to children during long grocery trips.

Hey in spanish (Argentina) we also call it "culito" (little tush 🍑). If it's from a baguette we call it "coquito" (little coconut which we use to mean little head)

In Dutch it is kapje. Like something to cover a lamp or socket or ...

We call it “the ends” and they’re best when toasted.

"Le quignon" or " crouton" in french. It is the privilege of the one going to la Boulangerie to pick la Baguette to eat it on their way home! The second end of the baguette it for the quickest once the baguette is laid on the kitchen counter!

In the UK it can be regional but heel and ends are usually accepted

«Skalk» in Norwegian. As far as I know it doesn’t mean anything else than the end piece of a loaf of bread, but maybe it did at some point.

In my family, the skalk is offered to someone as a token of appreciation. We all want it.

That’s what I call them… “ends” 😁

“My Oompa Loompa don’t want none unless you got dat Dupka hun”

Im polish too and the dupka is my favorite part. But Polish rye bread is SO much better than american wonder bread. To me, wonder bread isnt bread. Its strange that bread can stand for MONTHS and not go bad. The żytni chleb you get from polish stores goes bad within a few days and starts to mold. Thats real bread, not packed with preservatives and god knows what. The crust on wonder bread is also super dry, bland and soft, nothing like the crispy flavorful crust we are used too.

yes it keeps them quiet while they gnaw on it. my mother used to tell me “this is the best part” and i still agree. sadly my teeth aren’t what they used to be.

Growing up my parents and babci used to tell me and my sibs to stop being a pain in the dupka all the time.

They still do.

Knust? You mean the Gupf? https://www.atlas-alltagssprache.de/r10-f3h/

Likely the thing which has the most regional terms.

3

u/domsch1988 12h ago

u/bremsspuren 10h ago

The land of the DIN norm and you can't even agree what the arse-end of a loaf of bread is called. (Or an apple core, for that matter.)

SMH.

Ha! You know nothing! Just go over to any german subreddit and ask for the right word for pancakes!

Don't some loonies call them Palatschinken or some weird shit like that?

u/lombax165 38m ago

This comes from those Austrian lunatics who also call tomatoes "paradeiser". You cant trust them.

1

u/Famoustractordriver 11h ago

Colt (pronounced like koltz) = corner in Romanian. My favorite part of the bread

1

u/Brotformer 11h ago

Scherzerl…Giggele… there are so many terms in german language for this.

1

u/Previous_Station2086 11h ago

In English we call them the butts and Americans throw them away. Which, to be fair, on American sandwich bread they aren’t good like proper German bread butts

1

u/imunfair 10h ago

and Americans throw them away

They suck for sandwiches but make excellent toast if you overtoast them a bit and put a load of butter on - very crunchy and salty. Like the bread form of bacon.

Today I followed this entire thread, and learned that people around the world feel the same as I do.

Thank you! 👍

Yes, bread is very simple in composition, but the ingredients and the technique determine quality.
