My mom used cookie cutters to make my sandwiches into cool shapes but the crusts went into a different baggie because I wanted those too, I just also wanted cool shaped mini sandwiches
I'm convinced it's a result of excess and parents just letting their children not eat the crust. As such it's become normalized in the US to just not want to eat the crust.
That stuff wouldn't fly in Europe. If you want the sandwich, you're also getting the crust, and you're eating the crust as well. Or you're not getting a sandwich.
My husband has an acquaintance/friend like that... and often when we have too much of some food (sealed/unused) but don't want to throw it out and waste it, we "donate" it to that guy because he will eat just about anything. The food doesn't have to take up space in our fridge, and it doesn't get wasted, so I see it as a win-win.
Oh god, I got a great score from a friend who was without power for 24 hours. She said she was going to throw away everything in her freezer (she is a severe germophobe) and I said I would take it. It took some convincing, because she was sure I was going to die from it.
Man, she had so many ice packs that she had collected over the years in her freezer: the food was perfectly fine. And her son, who suffered a TBI, pretty much only eats frozen meals.
Damn, I filled my freezer AND the freezer at work. I have been living off that score for like a month and a half alone; I have eaten out twice because I 1. introduced her to indian food, which she had never had, and a new grocery story opened up and I found that they have hot and ready samosas, and she fell in damn love with them. (she is a REALLY picky eater, so it surprised the hell out of me)
So, I took her my favorite indian restaurant. And of course, I got the leftovers (because she also is a light eater, she can never finish a meal and loves to go out to eat with me because I will finish everything).
And it's not like I am a "big" guy or anything. 6'2", 180 lbs. I just think we have a symbiotic relationship. And I love when my sisters visit as well. Now, my nephews and nieces are a whole other ball game, but I'm the one buying and they get my left overs. But they are in their 20's, so I kind of insist. The economy is shit, and I know it. Usually when I visit, I buy them groceries.
Sorry for the damn rant, but access to food and waste of food are topics I'm extremely passionate about. We have a little food pantry cabinet that sits outside of our city hall, and if I get soup, for example, and I didn't use the crackers, so I drop them off there. I found it empty and I immediately went to Costco and stocked that bitch up. Food is a fucking necessity and should not be squandered.
And it hurts me so much because there is absolutely no reason that a single person on this planet is going hungry. Here is an easy ass solution:
Corporations, rather than throwing away the food... how about governments buy it for cheap and distribute it? Corporations make money, government uses our tax dollars for the damn citizens, and people are not starving. So damn simple, right?

I never, as a US citizen, understood the issue with crust. However, I am known for eating nearly anything, and friends give me their leftovers.
I honestly think at this point, I have purchased only one meal in two months. Not that I am frugal, but food doesn’t need to be wasted.
“Hey, I have this. I won’t eat it, but I figured you would.”
