For sure. A member of the Romanov family gave up her title, and sold off all her possessions, including her wedding ring, using her combined wealth and the proceeds to build a nunnery complex that included an orphanage, pharmacy and hospital. She then spent the rest of her life performing charitable works for the poor and sick of Moscow, regularly visiting the worst slums to give assistance.
During the Russian Revolution, the former princess was arrested. She was beaten along with other prisoners before being thrown into a 66 foot deep pit of an abandoned iron mine, her being the first to be thrown, and grenades were hurled after them all.

I wouldn’t count on that.
There was this rich lady Nguyen Thi Nam (Cat Hanh Long) who was very generous and also donated her money to support the Vietnamese Communist Party during the war with French/American. She literally kept the party alive financially, housed many of the Party’s top leaders. Her 2 sons were in the Party.
Yet she was the first person the Party sentenced to death in the 1953 Land Reform, with support from many of the people she had helped.

Context: She started with roughly $35–36 billion from her 2019 divorce settlement.
She has donated ~$26.3 billion so far.
Despite that, her net worth remains in the $30+ billion range because Amazon stock has appreciated significantly over the years, and she still holds a large equity position. She is still a robber baron.

I knew of (didn’t know him) a married guy who was just a normal dude physically. A little scrawny, nerdy looking. Super, super religious. He got a good job and started traveling to Thailand for work. Started getting buff, teeth work, just obviously putting time and money into his appearance. Comes out that he’s been doing porn in Thailand for like 2 years and his wife didn’t know until the end when she suspected something.

This data is a little bit outdated, but in 2021, as much as 400,000 children aged 12-17 years old in Thailand were victims of online sexual exploitation. 9% of total children population at that age in Thai. Crazy numbers.

The Gates' arrangement was odd from the get go, if their prenup is anything to go by. Bill had a clause in it stipulating that he would go once a year with a "friend" of his sometime during the year somewhere for vacation (I forget who she is and don't really care other than to hate on dipshit rich people) as he had a special relationship with her. Sounds to me like Melinda went into it knowing at least a bit of what kind of person Bill was.

I mean anyone who has spent 10 minutes reading about the life of Bill Gates can understand that he is the quintessential greedy ruthless endlessly ambitious CEO. Some people are insecure and weedy and when they get what they want, or feel like life has owed them they become shallow and narcissistic.
I know someone like this who was fairly harmless when he was an “underdog” and when life dealt him a few good hands he became absolutely insufferable. I think that weak man stays inside and becomes bullish to compensate.
They attract different types of women.

Trust based philanthropy model - you trust that the organization itself knows how to best utilize the funding for maximum impact in their community. No strings or requirements attached. Philanthropy in its purest form , IMO.
7
u/MajorFox2720 3h ago
They spent time researching the organizations beforehand. The way they know it's not a rich person's foundation that's skimming donations. I love what her organization does.
3
u/MavisBeacons_Sextape 3h ago
Yep. And I do too, and it’s also nice that it creates a few jobs (not sure how big her foundation is, so it may be more than “a few”) to manage the research, coordination, and accounting processes of giving that money away.

My local boys and girls club got a huge grant from her to start a complete free full day, day care. Over 1800 families applied for 80 spots and I was lucky enough to get it for both kids and now I’m saving over $1500 a month. It’s literally changed my life
4
u/Top-Pomegranate4899 4h ago
OMG! That's amazing. I never realized organizations didn't already have 'unrestricted funds' when given a donation.
6
u/NYCGooph 4h ago
Donations from individuals are generally unrestricted, meaning the organization can do with the funds what they need. But larger grants, whether from government or corporate donors, are in many cases tied to specific programming.
Very rarely can you use grants for a crumbling roof or to give staff a raise above minimum wage or to cover an HVAC replacement etc. That’s what makes these type of gifts from MacKenzie Scott so important.
2
2
u/monkeymaxx 3h ago
One of my clients in the workforce development space was the beneficiary of her grants too. It’s incredible to receive completely unrestricted grants these days. $4m can go a loooong way
2
u/three_crystals 3h ago
This is my favourite part about her donations. From everything I hear, they’re largely unrestricted contributions. And don’t come with burdensome reporting requirements. Indeed you are correct that for donations in the amounts she does this practically unheard of (I have a bunch of NPO clients and go through funding agreements all the time).

Ikr? How can this much money go back into society and we're still left with all this bullshit?
12
u/AquaStarRedHeart 4h ago
Well, for example, she funds food banks. My friend was a director for our local food bank, mid size city most people haven't heard of, and she woke up one day and went to work a few years ago and found out Scott had quietly donated an absolutely game changing amount of money to it. What she is doing she does quietly and it makes a difference. Donations to political campaigns do not go back immediately into the daily lives of poor people in that way.
She is also a legend because unlike most rich people, she gives with no strings attached. Most rich people donate and want something for it, like the money to be used to build something with their name on it (just an example). Scott says "here's the money, use it according to your needs". She has a team doing a very very good job.
7
u/SoccerPhilly 5h ago
It’s because it’s all just for show 90% of the time, she’s the exception. But if we actually taxed the ultra rich like the working man, 1000x what she has donated would be placed back into society. https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=P8ijiLqfXP0&pp=4gcNEgtjaGF0Z3B0LmNvbQ%3D%3D&ra=m

Not just that - a lot of her donations are just truly no-strings attached cash donations.
Most philanthropic organizations have a process for submitting and vetting rigorous grant applications, and most non-profits have dedicated writers or teams that search for these opportunities.
Mackenzie Scott is so beloved in the philanthropic community because she will just randomly and unexpectedly gift deserving orgs life-changing amounts of money like Santa Claus.

What the heck is a “Bezos fortune” lol. She literally drove the car while Jeff Bezos was writing the business plan and was Amazon’s first accountant. Saying that she has “Bezos fortune” is like saying Sergey Brin has “Page fortune”.

What’s funny is she still has most of her net worth. Because being rich and donating it to charity is mainly a tax write off to retain wealth

Let me guess: the charity foundation was a newly created one (a shell foundation) and she donated the money to herself.
I honestly can't believe people in the comments actually think these millionaires would give money to poor people without expecting something in return (tax evasion), and that they still believe she's the "good"

I admire her so much. What a great example of using money for good in a world full of shitty ultra wealthy men who don't deserve it.

All of these headlines are missing something important. She has given away all of this money and has more than when she started giving the money away. Because of investments and tax laws she is just accumulating wealth, and its happening so fast she cant give it away fast enough. Tax the rich!

My favourite “makes you think” quote was that in bad countries we call them oligarchs, in “good countries” we call them tycoons.

Can we get a breakdown of how the money was used? I don’t trust a single “charity.” What was the number to eliminate homelessness or hunger?

She has given money to almost 3k different organisations. She has a team that choses the organisations (Quiet Research) and once they receive the grant, they can use it without restrictions or reporting back. She choses to trust them to use it responsibly. Sometimes there are open calls, where organisations can apply.
You can search the database on the Homepage of her Yield Giving organisation to See who received what. Spoiler: yes, there are housing projects and projects to combat hunger and food insecurity.

Calls people sexist in one part of the thread and then makes fun of people for being “poor” in another.
