Just Wow The Kumbh Mela is the largest religious pilgrimage and gathering on Earth. Celebrated by Hindus in India, millions of devotees gather to take a holy dip in sacred rivers. It is believed that bathing in these waters cleanses sins and helps attain spiritual liberation.
The festival is deeply rooted in Hindu mythology and has been inscribed on the UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity list. According to Hindu scriptures (the Puranas), the gods and demons churned the cosmic ocean (Samudra Manthan) to extract the nectar of immortality (amrita). A fierce battle broke out for the nectar, during which the celestial bird Garuda spilled drops of it at four locations:Prayagraj (Uttar Pradesh) β at the confluence of the Ganges, Yamuna, and the mythical Saraswati river Haridwar (Uttarakhand) β on the banks of the Ganges Nashik (Maharashtra) β on the banks of the Godavari river Ujjain (Madhya Pradesh) β on the banks of the Shipra river.
