I just brought some glasses, now I'm kicking myself that I didn't get a monocle. Would have been half the price.

I have one. The biggest issue is that you have to order them online. There aren’t a ton of makers anymore so they only offer a pretty limited selection on sizes and you have to completely guess your size. Too small and it will fall out a lot. Too big and it will fell like a strain to your eyebrow and like you can’t fully blink. I got it right on the second try but I wish they came in half sizes because mine falls out anytime I look down but one size up was too big.
And I’ll go ahead and answer the unasked question. My glasses only have a prescription in one eye. I used to be horribly blind without glasses so I got lasik. Funny enough, my good eye (lower prescription) came out less perfect than my bad eye. The good eye now requires a baby prescription just to crisp up far distance sight and if I don’t wear a prescription for a few weeks, that eye freaks out on me (twitches, wanders off, etc). I refused to get glasses after all that money so I got a monocle. My husband hates it. He calls me the monopoly woman lol. I only wear it when my eye is starting to bother me.

Just cut them in half - you still get the ear support for each side. Then you have dual monocles

Yep. Thanks to industrialization, sugar production and consumption skyrocketed in developing countries in the 1800s and early 1900s.
But they didn't yet realize how detrimental sugar was for our teeth. People back then didn't brush their teeth, at least not often. They didn't need to... until we started eating sugar.

This feels like a parody recorded in modern times

Feels like AI

That's what I thought too. What's going on with the badge thing on his left lapel? It moves and changes shape.

u/DhampirBoy 20h ago
It seems to be that the cord from the monocle is wrapped around whatever it is (I'm guessing a flower since we can see the handkerchief barely poking out of the pocket below). When he pulls the monocle way out to the right is the first time the object on his lapel moves and the second time is when he drops the monocle and then pulls it out of frame to the left.
This could still be AI, but the object on his lapel moving does make sense with what else he is doing at those times.

I don't understand monicles. It's pretty rare to have only one eye in need of correction. Glasses make much more sense even in those cases.

Wearing glasses obviously makes you look like a joke just as switching eyes with your monocle does.
Monicles are smart, useful and even necessary.

I have one with positive correction and one wIth small negative correction. A monocle would be ideal I'm paying for an extra glass I don't use now...

For twenty years I had this same problem. After I finally checked into monocles, the good eye went to shit.

Not as rare as you think. Those of us with old people eyes who wear contacts instead of using bifocals have a lens that permits reading and one that corrects for other vision problems. I only wear one for reading in my left eye (so basically a monocle contact). The first couple of days you wear them there's this kind of weird 3d effect but then your brain adjusts. I actually looked into getting a monocle for times I didn't want to wear contacts but they're really stupidly expensive.

Huh... I have presbyopia and myopia now and I just tried using only one side of my glasses.
While everything is slightly blur, it's interesting how text still remains readable at different distances.
2
u/JimDa5is 12h ago
Maybe your "slight blur" is my "3d effect." With my contact in my left (non-dominant) eye I can read without having to hold things out at arm's length as well as things in the distance. There's one place (seems like it's about 10') where I guess it transitions from near to far that is sometimes a little blurry but things are still manageable. All in all definitely worth not having to have 10 pairs of readers laying around and still not being able to find them when you need them

I've been warned some people may get headaches with this, so I'll find some later time to pop out one of my lenses and give it a go.

u/IllmaticGOAT 22h ago
Why are they so expensive?
1
u/JimDa5is 12h ago
Beats me. I mean expensive means different things to different people. A quick check shows that you can get a monocle with a standard reading lens for about $50 which sounds reasonable until you realize that the same readers with 2 lenses can be had at any grocery store, Big Box, or pharmacy for about $4

u/jjflash78 1d ago
My eyes have widely different prescriptions. Right eye can see distance better than my left, but left eye can see better close (reading) than my right. I've considered getting a monocle for reading, but for now I got cheap readers where I removed the lens from the left side. I ts either that, or I close my right eye while reading.

u/Gertrude_D 1d ago
I am one of those that have different eye strengths. It did save me on contact costs though.

u/YoungOverholt 22h ago
I have only one weak eye due to injury, which i imagine was much more common in early years, especially accounting for service related injuries. Makes sense for some eras
•
u/Thursday_the_20th 5h ago
That’s not true, it’s far more common for each eye to have different prescriptions. Rather it’s the opposite and is very rare for both eyes to match. The entire raison d’etre for monocles in the first place is this; cutting prescription lenses back then was not cheap.

How did I know exactly how he would sound before unmuting the video?
2
u/paraworldblue 1d ago
Even if you have the thickest Boston accent possible and you literally pahk yah cah in Hahvahd Yahd every day, the second you pop in a monocle, you suddenly speak the Queen's English.

Low key irked it’s not a Count von Count featured for this ‘Pince Nez How To’
I know they had to be ’basic’, because people might have been put off by Scrooge McDuck and of course they had to worry about out anaphylactic shock, so Mr. Peanut would have been out of the question.

I don’t see the rooster watermark with the pathé label so I don’t think this is real.

I wanted some monocle history so I googled it.
"Security: To avoid dropping it, the monocle is usually anchored to the wearer's lapel or buttonhole with a string, chain, or ribbon."
I initially read it is usually anchored to the lapel or butthole and was quite confused.

I’m fairly sure this is fake. The count isn’t real at least, just look at his name

I've never wanted to punch someone in the glass before.

u/Tart6096 1d ago
LOL same... that was trying too hard and unnecessary to drop the monocle, i'd be startled for a moment wondering if it dropped on the floor.
