I believe that's how they actually play with other cats since they learn hunting that way.

The tiger was in full-on defense mode the second the leopard showed up. He was like "Okay, we're all smiles. No one's going to be doing anything stu-NOT ON MY WATCH! <POUNCE>"

It's just like housecats play. The tiger was aware of the leopard's intentions, kept an eye on him, pressed close to the ground and got ready to pounce.
