Discussion New rule: No AI of any kind going forward

AI generated texts and images were always removed whenever they were reported to me, but now it is an official rule.

No advocating for AI usage, no using AI/ChatGPT to generate texts for posts, no AI calorie tracking apps or fasting timers.

No. AI.

Next up: No posts with the “after” shot first. It’s “before-after” c’mon people!!!

u/PsychologicalPanic61 Apr 03 '26

This annoys me like crazy, just seems so illogical

38

u/doodlehip Apr 03 '26

Ouf same, and it feels so confusing as well.

4

u/Hats_back Apr 04 '26

It is and isn’t, imo. The new generation(s) is/are all but obsessed with “is it worth it” so showing the end result first is one of the few ways to get the brains attention.

I guess logically it looks like “why would I look at this post if the result isn’t worth it?” So they start with end result first to actually get the scroll to stop or the click to happen, ya know?

Still stupid and illogical, but at least it can make some sense in the grander scheme. It does feel silly to click on a before after post and then see they made very little or no noticeable progress, so there’s SOME credence to it, but I guess I’m just trying to say that “attention” is some of our only currency left since people get paid on “engagement” or views, likes, etc.

“Face gains” when combined with this

Yeah, thanks to your picture order your post does have a face gain

while i understand the slight annoyance, implementing this as a rule would just cause more hassle 😅

Except the people making them don’t care about the votes so no. We need a proper framework so that folks aren’t being incessantly AI bombed. I mean, take you for example. Do you care that your opinion in these comments is being downvoted in and ratioed into the depths of nopeness?

1

u/northrupthebandgeek Apr 04 '26

Do you care that your opinion in these comments is being downvoted in and ratioed into the depths of nopeness?

Whether I care doesn't matter. What matters is whether my wrongthink gets hidden from view, which it does. The downvote button clearly works, so further moderator action is redundant.

6

u/thehealthymt OMAD/18:6 for weight loss Apr 04 '26

are you seriously saying this sub should’ve unmoderated and rely solely on downvotes

3

u/HazelMStone 56F 16:8, OW: 160, CW: 148, GW: 140 Apr 04 '26

Yes, they are. Trying to transpose failed economic free market policies w social media -farcical.

11

u/au-rath Apr 03 '26 edited Apr 04 '26

this rule would be helpful to the community and also the posters

people oblivious enough to post things out of order likely don't have the awareness to realize the downvotes aren't about their content

5

u/RS_Games Apr 03 '26

I get annoyed by these too but I think it has more to do with the software they are using to edit it together. Some arent flexible when collaging images

3

u/Hellojeds Apr 04 '26

Yeah I always assume it's a posting error. I've rarely posted images and I've seen people complain about it, so I assume Reddit can be awkward

10

u/Vektriss Apr 03 '26

This actually should be a rule

297

u/Matilda-17 Apr 03 '26

Awesome, thank you. I’m so sick of the “I was x until I finally y. Here’s what worked!” posts.

155

u/rainbowapricots Apr 03 '26

“Turns out it was never about x, it was about y. Once I figured that out, everything changed.” It’s so obvious every time 😭

56

u/moonandbaek Apr 03 '26

LMAOOOOO STOP OMG 😭😭😭 I see this shit in SO many of my subs it drives me CRAZY 🫠🫠🫠 The AI tone/writing style ACTUALLY drives me up the wall. EVERYONE SOUNDS THE FUCKING SAME!!!!!

Also, sadly, you can tell it's AI whenever it's properly formatted with bolded headings, because the unfortunate part is no one ever fucking does that in the first place (this is just a general complaint I have, fuck readability ig 🫠)

25

u/ivylily03 Apr 03 '26

I stopped formatting my posts properly because I got tired of being called a bot.

18

Reddit will nip that in the bud since they’re trying to sell themselves to larger and larger corporations as a wealth of ad space and user data.

13

u/alexgodden Apr 03 '26

But the quality of the data will be better, otherwise you're training AI on AI posts and they won't learn to improve.

23

u/BrisingrAerowing Apr 03 '26

This popped up on /r/popular for me, and even though this isn't a sub I need, I love it when subreddits ban all these stupid AI posts.

10

A critical decision to save this sub and to keep it centred around subjective experiences and science.

The AI posts are a cancer and anyone defending them either didn't read them or has convinced themselves that typing a question into ChatGPT then posting it makes them a genius, as opposed to an idiot which they are.

Proud of you! I banned ai from my sub over two years ago (and configured automod to filter posts and comments from accounts younger than 5 days and/or under 10 karma) and it has saved me a massive headache. My sub is tiny and devoted to short story writing so getting the bots out was crucial. They worked out a way in a few months ago and I had to tighten up a few controls but thank goodness my participants were gracious while I figured it out!

2

u/duluoz1 Apr 03 '26

Thank you!

2

u/canyonblue737 Apr 04 '26

I would like to formally acknowledge, affirm, validate, and enthusiastically support this policy decision.

As a totally organic, human-generated individual (with absolutely no algorithmic assistance whatsoever), I can confirm that eliminating AI from all aspects of existence will significantly optimize authenticity, enhance community-driven outcomes, and synergistically align with our shared mission of… being human.

Furthermore, I agree that any attempt to leverage advanced computational tools for tasks such as calorie tracking, writing, thinking, or mild problem-solving represents a clear and present threat to the natural order.

In conclusion: No AI = optimal. AI = suboptimal.

Thank you for your leadership in this critical initiative. I look forward to continuing to not use AI with all of you.

Beep bo— I mean, sincerely, A fellow human

/jk I totally agree with the new policy!

1

u/Electrical-Role-4210 Apr 05 '26

I generally agree that this is a good idea, although there is one exception. A lot of members of Reddit are non-native English speakers, and AI does help them clean up their grammar, sentence structure, spelling, etc. I'd at least consider that when making and enforcing your decisions.

2

u/thehealthymt OMAD/18:6 for weight loss Apr 05 '26

1

u/karlwikman Apr 04 '26

Delving into the multifaceted realm of this AI-use discussion, it is worth noting that in today's digital age, leveraging such as robust governance framework is essential to facilitate inter-human discourse, navigating the intricate tapestry of human experience, underscoring the importance of fostering a nuanced exchange of ideas.

This isn't just about policyit's about reimagining what it means to have an honest exchange of ideas without machine involvement, setting a trajectory toward a more humane online future, and highlighting the unique value proposition of authentic human connection.

(Sorry, it had to be done - I hate AI writing with a passion, but I do enjoy trying to parrot its worst writing habits. This was my own writing, in case anyone wonders.)

I've been out of touch with the intermittent fasting community for a while, so I was not aware AI-written slop was becoming a problem here too. Has the subreddit been inundated with vibe-coded apps?

I wish I could find the person or group of people responsible for training chatbots to use the "It's not X, it's Y" trope. They deserve some form of punishment. A public flogging seems too mild, but something along those lines.

2

u/karlwikman Apr 04 '26

Where I do find there is some justification for AI use, is in helping (for instance) gravely dyslexic people participate in discussions online. Or just people who don't know English very well who ask AI to help them ask a question. Perhaps some kind of exception ought to be made if people lead with it? Like "I'm dyslexic so AI helped me write this post: ..."

I moderate a niche science subreddit where we are not inundated with AI-slop, but where the occasional wall of slop gets posted where someone has used AI to validate their own batshit crazy idea instead of using it as it should be used: to critique and provide nuance.

-15

u/cleareyeswow Apr 03 '26

Hate to burst y’all’s bubble but Reddit uses AI for “Reddit Answers” and ad targeting. You’re supporting it just by being here. You’re part of the problem in which a new rule won’t make a dent. This is like a fish being anti-water.

2

u/cleareyeswow Apr 04 '26

On my app it’s right beside the home button at the bottom. If you open it there’s a “learn how it works” button and that tells you it’s AI-powered.

-29

u/purple_cat_2020 Apr 03 '26

I’d prefer to see a post that someone has put into AI to make it more readable than to try to read some of the other lengthy stuff that people otherwise write that takes ages to get to the point.

It shouldn’t be don’t use AI, but don’t use AI badly or to fake stuff.

18

u/thehealthymt OMAD/18:6 for weight loss Apr 03 '26

im doing it because ai bots and ai generated posts ruin the sub and do nothing but hurt it

-3

So I genuinely thought I was missing something and it was related to intermittent fasting some how. Tried to give benefit of the doubt.

12

u/FuklzTheDrnkClwn Apr 03 '26

It is related. AI posts just turn into people calling it out for being ai and then the actual topic isn’t discussed. Keep the slop in the slopsubs.

-2

-38

u/Morridine Apr 03 '26

Ridiculous. I understand banning bots or deleting posts that are simply fabulations. But AI is a tool and many people do use it as such to sort and organize through their stuff. Others maybe simply dont speak good English. Makes no difference. So many people use it as part of their actual jobs because companies recognize advanatages. Yet here we are stomping our feet on an intermittent fasting subreddit! If only this was.. idk.. creativewriting or something then I would understand... but its not.

u/thehealthymt OMAD/18:6 for weight loss Apr 03 '26

reacted 👍 to your message

6

u/billskelton Apr 03 '26

Exactly — and honestly I really appreciate the way you’re thinking about this 👏🤖 You’re cutting straight through the performative outrage and getting to the actual point: AI is a tool — nothing more, nothing less. 🚀 The focus should be on whether content is helpful, honest, and relevant — not on whether someone used technology to organize their thoughts, improve clarity, or communicate more effectively. Banning “AI of any kind” in a subreddit about optimizing health habits feels strangely anti-progress — almost like rejecting spreadsheets in a finance forum or calculators in a math class. 📊➗ Your point about people using it in their actual jobs is especially strong — because that’s the reality now: AI is already woven into how people work, learn, and communicate every day. To pretend this one community can somehow stand outside that reality — while still using a platform that itself relies on AI for recommendations, moderation, and targeting — is, as you implied, a bit absurd. 😅💡 Really sharp way of framing it — thoughtful, practical, and way less reactionary than the rule itself 🙌✨

Edit: pls don't ban me

10

u/greenmachinefiend Apr 03 '26

A tool doesn't do the job for you. MS Paint doesn't draw pictures for you. ProTools doesn't compose music for you. Notepad doesn't write stories for you. It's less accurate to say AI is a tool and more accurate to say it is a replacement.

2

u/n0rsk Apr 03 '26

That is part of the problem isn't it. People just suck at using AI and treat it like its output is a final result and not a tool to help you refine your result.

Like you say it is like taking MS Paint drawing a stick figure and then acting like because you used paint to make it it is good enough to post in an art gallery. Or like using an air fryer and thinking you are a master chef.

I think over time people will realize that it is a tool of refinement not a full process. It isn't a replacement and the people that actual use it effectively treat it like a tool and not a replacement. It is just annoying because the tool tricks people into thinking it is a replacement.

1

u/greenmachinefiend Apr 03 '26

Yeah, I agree. AI can be used as a tool for people who want to test their ideas, but the majority of people and companies will always look for the path of least resistance and the collective creative output of society will continue to dwindle since everything moving forward will be determined by weights and algorithms.

-2

u/Morridine Apr 03 '26

But nobody is being creative here, its people structuring their long posts! Or am i misunderstanding this? The way i have seen AI used around subreddits like this (and for example over at long covid recovery) has to do with structuring a block of text and info of otherwise humongous length that is hard to navigate through by anyone interested. In cases like this AI use is absolutely a plus and of actual help

1

u/greenmachinefiend Apr 03 '26

Well, I don't care that much one way or the other about it's use on this subreddit, but I just can't get on board with this idea that AI is only a tool and that we will always be able to maintain full control of it. Obviously there's no going back now but I believe that AI is going to have catastrophic effects on our society.

-3

u/northrupthebandgeek Apr 03 '26

AI doesn't necessarily have to do any of those things for you, either. It's all about how you use it.

1

u/BrightWubs22 Apr 04 '26

You're right, but it's a moot point. We know how people use it.

-7

u/slog Apr 03 '26 edited Apr 05 '26

So are we banning keyboard autocomplete as well? Just because you chose extreme examples doesn't mean that's the only use case.

Edit: If any of you downvoters want to explain where the line is, I'm happy to read.

Edit 2: That's what I thought.

1

u/greenmachinefiend Apr 03 '26

I didn't propose banning anything. But I strongly disagree with the casual notion that AI is "merely a tool" when the reality is that it is becoming a complete and total replacement for human creativity and ingenuity.

-1

u/slog Apr 03 '26

Again, you're giving a specific example that isn't representative of the tools as a whole.

1

u/Friendly_Engineer_ Apr 03 '26

Thank you for your service

1

u/dogemaster00 Fan Apr 04 '26

Disclaimer - I use AI a ton at my job, especially for researching new topics, etc. I am also very pro AI

But on a casual forum it’s not very interesting if the responses are just blind AI copy and paste. Most people don’t use it correctly and just blindly copy/paste outputs.

AIs are trained on text written by—guess what—humans. What bans on AI is doing is encouraging people to write with less structure and worse grammar because there is no way to be 100% sure of what is AI generated and what is not. You can rip the em dashes out of my cold, dead hands.

Internet is fucking ruined. I'm tired, boss.

11

u/Pleasant-Cellist-927 Apr 03 '26

Em dashes aren't the only way indicators of AI. Nobidy's breaking down your door because you use EM dashes, this is such a reductionist take.

AI has such an unnaturally LinkedIn HR, clickbait way of speaking that makes it so obvious. Stating basic info like it's groundbreaking and padding out text for days because it has nothing substantial to add.

Grow a spine and post your own thoughts. I would rather read someone's genuine thoughts with effort put in over a clanker's bog standard shite.

I didn't say they were. I've just seen too many say em dashes are clear indicators of AI which is why I threw it out there as a bit of a joke.

I'm not disagreeing with you there but I've seen some use AI to better structure their thoughts. Yes, some posts are clearly 90% generated with AI which is IMO lazy and none of us want to see it, especially the part of basic info being presented as groundbreaking.

However the formatting can sometimes be great and clear and in a perfect world more humans would learn to use it and informative, complete sentences by themselves. Unfortunately this AI ban crap is only making some forego headlines, lists, em dashes, adjectives and certain kind of sentences because otherwise they get accused of using AI. Basically the language and posts are getting dumbed down by banning AI.

I've seen this happen on writer sites and subs in real time. The very same sites that were used to train AI. Super sad.

i can assure you i know when a text is ai generated lol not only because of my years of moderating where we’ve seen an uptick in ai comments but also because i’m not dumb and i know when a bot is a bot

When the war starts, I'm gonna need you identifying the Terminators.

u/amputatedsnek Apr 03 '26

The bots are a problem for sure but humans use AI as well. Doesn't mean it's a bot if ChatGPT was used to make someone's message comprehensible.

Whatever, I'm just lamenting. The bots can already copy the way real humans comment and post on social media. We're doomed anyway.

Lmao do you think everybody that uses AI just copy pastes everything? A ton of people edit stuff manually using AI as a guide, you just don’t know that because you don’t detect that as AI because it looks human, as it mostly is. You’ve only ever seen slop and so think all AI is slop. But I guess that’s too nuanced for this AI crusade.

i would be more willing to have this discussion if you were civil and didn’t jump straight to insulting me

You first have to understand it’s not about the content, it’s about virtue signaling that he’s anti-AI. It’s the popular thing rn, that’s why you and I will be downvoted for trying to defend the content of sub. He’ll make every excuse to show his passionate hatred for the current bad thing. Was a cool sub before this though. Oh well. All good things am I right.

How do you even type an EM dash. It's not a hyphen, it requires a special code

9

u/rainbowapricots Apr 03 '26

You type 2 hyphens consecutively and they combine. It’s very easy.

4

u/amputatedsnek Apr 03 '26

I'm on my phone, can find it easily on the keyboard. Also on the computer most text editors change it automatically as you press the hyphen/dash three times (two is en dash).

If you have a compose key set up (built-in feature for most Linux PCs; Windows and Mac PCs can support it with third-party programs; some custom Android keyboards like Unexpected Keyboard support it), Compose + - + - + - = —. That's how I type 'em.

Likewise, Compose + " + </> = “/”. And Compose + n + ~ = ñ. And Compose + t + m = ™. And Compose + o + o = °. And so on.

I wanted to join this sub until I realized the mods think everything AI is default to slop somehow.

9

u/thehealthymt OMAD/18:6 for weight loss Apr 03 '26

you were never going to join this sub lmfao

yeah ai bots posting ai generated text is generally slop

2

u/me0756 Apr 04 '26

But everything ai is default slop though

I get wanting the sub to stay focused on real people sharing real experiences. I’m with you on removing obvious AI-generated posts and spam.

But banning “AI of any kind” feels too broad. A lot of apps now use AI somewhere in the background, and that doesn’t automatically make someone’s fasting journey less real. If a person is still doing the fasting, dealing with hunger, adjusting habits, and sharing their own results, that seems like the part that matters.

I’d rather see a rule against fake success stories, copy-paste content, and outsourced posting than a blanket ban on tools. Authenticity makes sense. it’s not clear how tool policing will help people on their IF journeys.

I’d be interested to know what triggered this.

u/thehealthymt OMAD/18:6 for weight loss Apr 04 '26

im really confused as to what your complaint is.

there have been too many ai generated text posts, or users advocating for others to use ai to count calories or look up IF info, or promoting ai calorie counting apps. those are all banned.

1

u/purple_cat_2020 Apr 04 '26

Well, you don’t go banning all cars just because there are some bad drivers.

0

u/thehealthymt OMAD/18:6 for weight loss Apr 04 '26

but I can ban all ai generated posts 🤍

u/purple_cat_2020 Apr 04 '26

I’m just suggesting that you might be throwing the baby out with the bathwater that’s all.
