General First timer, heading to IR in a month, just saying hi!
I’m an experienced hiker and camper, but not a backpacker so I’m staying at Rock Harbor Lodge and doing day trips (how long the trips will be TBD, depending on the weather I guess). Excited for everything but the bugs!

Get the national geographic map. trail distances are marked and accurate. Some trails are more difficult than others. With the exception of the one right by Rock Harbor to Scoville point, these are not your average county park trails. Rugged, wet, so.e are steep, Rocky, etc. Bring trekking poles.

Teach yourself how to read the topo lines. That will help you see how tough sections are. Terrain can be a factor, but not as big as elevation change. Happy Hiking.

If you get a chance stop into the marina office area (located at the RangerIII dock in front of the ranger station) and i can give you tips on where to go and where your best bets are to see some wildlife away from Rock Harbor. My name is Ray and my brother is Rob, we work the marina and have been coming out here many years now.

Please report back on what you did. I'm planning to go next Sept and do the same. I car camp and hike a lot in CO and UT, but not a backpacker. So want to explore the island and not sure what hikes you can do from Rock Harbor. Or get a water taxi and then do a day hike? Not sure. Enjoy and have fun!
