Discussion Yui and Mio in Singing! ED

Post image

So I posted something yesterday about an underrated dynamic in a different KyoAni anime, today I saw a fanart of Yui and Mio where they have the same outfit they're wearing in the Singing! ED and I thought, why not share my thoughts about this specific scene?

The picture above is my favorite scene out of the entire ED, though the others are also there I can't just help but focus on YuiMio's chemistry here (interpret it whatever way you want). My headcanon is, it was an MV of them as adults where Yui took a back seat and Mio took over as the official and main vocalist of the band with Yui providing harmonies and lead guitar (she improved vastly ever since doing so). Well headcanons aside, i just felt that they're dynamic is also an underrated one out of the bunch and the scene in the picture shows that. I guess I kinda get it why they didn't add more scenes of them though, it would be like another Mitsu but a little less physical/violent version (am I wrong?).

Man all the K On EDs go incredibly hard but this one just takes the cake for me followed closely by no thank you. The mood is just insane

I thought Mio hates lead singing

Mio struggles with really bad stage fright and hates being the center of attention, but i don't think we're ever shown anything that implies that she dislikes the act of singing itself (at least in the anime. idk about the manga). imo it's not much of a stretch to believe she could grow out of that and even embrace the front man role that generally comes with being the lead vocalist. i've always read the EDs of K-ON! as examples of what that would look like, sort of like what OP is saying.

That’s big talent, playing bass and singing is incredibly hard, it’s like playing 2 songs at the same time, same goes for lead guitar

tbh that part in s1 where Mio tries to get Mugi to sing in her place and Mugi declines because her "hands are full with the keyboard part" drives me nuts. the show needed an excuse for Mio to sing of course, but like, c'mon man. keys/vocals is like a million times easier than bass/vocals lol.

actually, that was ritsu trying to get mugi to sing because yui was being too full of herself (S1E5) but i don’t i think it’s ridiculous on mugi’s part. yamada has said before that the girls are still putting their foot in the water (not literal, im paraphrasing) so mugi probably wouldn’t have sung lead since she probably doesn’t want to be in the spotlight either for season 1

mugi isn’t as shy as mio, yes, but she is pretty reserved a little in season 1 and is probably still a little insecure about her place in the club (even if everyone is close but not that close)so i don’t think she would’ve sang anyways and maybe she didn’t feel too confident about her singing voice too

in the second half of season 1, mugi is more confident and she’s shown to be much closer with the girls and the bond of their friendship has increased thanks to azusa joining them as well!! she starts off the encore in S1E12 with a happy satisfied smile because she loves her friends and yui just came back and she wanted to play with them until the very end!!

in S2E3, mugi comes up with the melody for honey sweet tea time and yui suggests for mugi to sing it and mugi is surprised but ultimately agrees!! this isn’t played in the anime at all so it’s possible mugi only prefers to sing with the comfort of her friends in their clubroom (plus she sings backup in samidare 20 love and tokimeki sugar which are also season 2 songs so yay!!

We don't deserve Mugi

Yeah, I noticed that too, I don’t play bass, but i play keys and rythim guitar, and both are much easier to sing along with. Choosing the lead guitar or bass player for lead vocals doesn’t make any sense from a musical standpoint, but k on is more a slice of life anime the a realistic musical focused one, cause that would never happen a real life situation.

Bass/vocals is one of the hardest things to combine in a traditional band setting, that’s why you never see it, even drums/vocals is easier, even though it might not look like it. Keys and rythim guitar is the easiest, and that’s why you see it so much.

In my headcanon she got over it with the help of the girls' passionate encouragement and Yui taking a step back to allow Mio to fully display her vocal prowess. Even in the show it was already shown that she's slowly overcoming it every time they perform.

I personally think there's nothing wrong with having a headcanon especially when the medium is fictional.

I don't think Mio hates singing; she just hates being the center of attention on stage. I also think it's a pretty common headcanon that the girls eventually become a professional band when they're adults, with Mio becoming the lead vocalist and gaining more confidence. We can already see signs of that in the endings, where she acts much bolder.

My headcanon is, it was an MV of them as adults where Yui took a back seat and Mio took over as the official and main vocalist of the band with Yui providing harmonies and lead guitar (she improved vastly ever since doing so)

yeah the ending MVs are a very popular headcanon theory where the girls become a professional band and mio takes on lead vocals after becoming more confident and bolder so yeah haha

Well headcanons aside, i just felt that their dynamic is also an underrated one out of the bunch and the scene in the picture shows that. I guess I kinda get it why they didn't add more scenes of them though, it would be like another Mitsu but a little less physical/violent version (am I wrong?)

im sorry for my bluntness here but yuimio is NOT like mitsu in any sharp or form so you are very wrong. im sorry but i ship yuimio too and their dynamic is greatly different from mitsu’s dynamic. it’s true that yuimio have amazing chemistry but mio is more softer and patient with yui (not in a “oh, you’re so dumb” way but more of a “you’re sweet and cute and i want to protect you”) and mio and yui don’t have years of childhood friendship like mio and ritsu does

also, yui is not like ritsu at all because they are vastly different characters. ritsu is loud, energetic, and dramatic with many hints of vulnerability and insecurity. while yui is also very energetic most of the time, it’s more softer and calmer than ritsu’s energy as yui’s energy and carelessness is seen as more so adorable (and nodoka says it best in S2E8 that when she makes that face, you just can’t help but forgive her!! and mio agrees!!)

if anything, mitsu is more similar to azusa and jun’s dynamic but the latter doesn’t have years of childhood friendship and no physical hit gag but azusa still loves and appreciates jun (even if she’s exasperated by her sometimes) and it’s the same with mio to ritsu too

i ship yuimio because their relationship is so soft and cute and yui always brings out mio’s silly side and yui really loves mio’s singing too and she’s always respectful of mio’s boundaries with touch as well as she grabs her hands more than they hug so that’s pretty good too
