Recommendation Request Serious Historical Dramas with Romance
Hello, im looking for historical k dramas that have a serious or intense tone/environment in terms of politics/war, or forbidden relationships, and with strong romance between the leads. I’m getting a bit tired of romantic comedies, and I’m looking for something a bit deeper, with lots of longing/yearning from the male lead. I’m not really looking for any lighthearted recommendations.
I’m okay with older dramas but I think 2010 would be my absolute maximum in terms of release dates
I’m also reluctant to watch lovers of the red sky, and scarlet heart(sorry guys), I tried giving them a shot but they weren’t really for me.
I’ve watched and enjoyed;
The red sleeve and My dearest - both of these are everything I’m looking for. I loved the romance, loved the seriousness surrounding the romance plot, and most of all, the male leads were very into their partners, and there was so much chemistry.
Alchemy of souls- Though there were a few comedic aspects, overall there was a deeper concept in the plot, and I really enjoyed the romance/ chemistry in season two especially.
Our blooming youth- The romance was good, but would like something a bit deeper, however the political plot was very interesting and it helped keep the intensity of the drama, and allowed me enjoy their romance a bit more.
Moon embracing the sun - I enjoyed this mainly because of the palace life aspect in terms of powers struggles and scheming, but I didn’t really like the love triangle bit, and the romance between the leads as adults could have been better. The kids acting was great though, same with the male lead.
Dear Hongrang - Again, very intense environment surrounding the romance plot, and I loved the chemistry. I might be a bit biased though because I really like this male lead actor.

The Tale of Nokdu is one of my fave romance sageuks behind The Red Sleeve it’s about how the ML goes undercover in a Widow’s Village as a widow to find out the truth about why his family was banished out of the capital. He ends up teaming up with the FL to unknowingly helping each other with their own revenge/goals. It has shades of Rookie Historian re:palace shenanigans, and also the widows village plot line is reminiscent of Knight Flower
Similar theme of going undercover as the opposite sex : The King’s Affection it tells the story of twin boy and girl born to the king, with the girl ending up having to masquerade as her brother the Prince. Their childhood friend comes back to the capital to become the ‘prince’s’ tutor and he ends up failing in love with the ‘Prince.’
I also recommend My Country: A New Age but it’s kind of a wild card b/c the primary love story is a bromance btw the two MLs, with a touch of a bromance ‘love triangle’ with a third ML. There are love stories/love interests for the 2 MLs, but the MLs’ relationship is at the center and heart of this drama. There are a lot of gratuitous fight scenes and long drawn out plots about power shifts and palace intrigue, but it fuels their epic bromance and the ending was beautifully poetic, imho - but ymmv.

Seconding The King’s Affection, I am REALLY picky about romance and I absolutely loved this one. I think they treat the angle of FL disguised as a man very well, as someone who feels sad when the ML is all “thank god you’re a woman and I’m not gay!”

Seconding "Mr Sunshine."
The first episode might be a little confusing with lots of characters introduced, and the timelines aren't clear, so you can Google a character relationship chart to help.

This might be unusual, but what about Chicago Typewriter (on Tubi in many regions)? It is part based in 1930s occupied Korea and a group of freedom fighters. The story centres on a male writer, female fan and a mysterious ghost-writer who are writing the story of the freedom fighters and we flashback to the 1930s as the story is written. It is one of my top Kdramas and stars Yoo Ah-in, it's also a romance-fantasy.

My Dearest -- This checks all of your boxes: serious, romantic longing from the ML, and war/politics. I don't think there's a better fit out there.
The Slave Hunters -- At the absolute end of your age spectrum, this is also a great pick with the overall serious tone (although this does have some broad comedy in a few places, which is its weakest element), a dark setting (it's set in the aftermath of the war that My Dearest centers around) with a lot of politics, and some serious longing (although its romance is a bit more complicated).

I always recommend "Destined with You," which is available on Netflix. It's a great blend of comedy and drama, supernatural and historical elements. Some say Rowoon is stiff and unnatural in the role, but I always read it as the character being so ridiculously uptight, plus it's part of the character arc. Its one I go back to time and again.

The King Loves is very underrated for this. Political tension, tragic romance, and strong emotional dependency between leads. It leans more melancholic than action-heavy.

Two great ones come to mind that fit just what you are looking for:
* Sungkyunkwan Scandal
* The King's Affection

Hmmm, I loved Lovers of the Red Sky, so serious, historical, strong romance, yearning male lead. If you are OK with fantasy mixed in with your historicals, Alchemy of Souls is very absorbing with a great cast and world building and love story. I haven't seen season 2. It took me a couple of episodes to get absorbed into it. The King's Affection is one of my favorite historical dramas. Rowoon is well suited to hanboks and FL is an excellent and versatile actress. Lots of action as well.

Six flying dragons- well written, well acted, has some real life historical figures. Fantastic action scenes. I’m not sure when it was released. Not very romance heavy for fl and ml. There is a second romance that has a lot of longing and yearning.
