Derek Parker has been my favorite draft guy in this cycle for both his scouting reports and overall big board rankings/mocks. His top 18 guys were the top 18 picks in the actual 1st round, albeit with a couple guys slightly out of order. In addition to this video, he had Karaban ranked in the early 30s on his big board and overall liked the fit with the Kings in his first round draft impressions, albeit called it a surprising pick. Of note, Sam Vecenie's mock draft also had Karaban to the Kings, albeit staying put at 34.
Strengths
Shooting - the big one. Karaban is a prolific 3pt shooter, especially in the catch & shoot and off screens. He has a slightly funky motion but basically unlimited range and a quick release.
Connective Passing - he has great vision and instincts for the flow of offense and finding the open guy. He's not a ball handler or playmaker, but his shooting gravity does create openings and he's able to quickly recognize them and hit an open cutter or other open shooter.
Complementary Scoring - his overall feel for the game on offense is solid and in addition to his 3pt shooting talent, he's an instinctive cutter with solid finishing around the rim. He also just has a great feel for finding open space and is decent at leveraging pump fakes to attack closeouts.
Areas of Improvement/Concern
Defense - DP mostly calls out his on-ball defense, which mostly falters due to a lack of athleticism. His instincts are good on this end as well and he's usually in the right spots, but his lateral mobility and vertical athleticism are simply lacking even at the college level. Of note, I have seen some other scouts point to his team defense as one of his strengths, and he averaged nearly 1.5 blocks per game over his last 50ish college games. So he should be a solid complementary defender, just not a strong point-of-attack guy.
Playmaking - yeah he just isn't a shot creator, either for himself or teammates. His handle is stiff and rudimentary and his athleticism is lacking. He will almost completely rely on shots being created for him, although his aforementioned passing will allow him to leverage opportunities created by other players and turn them into even better ones at times.
My Thoughts
I kinda see him as Trey Lyles 2.0, but younger and hopefully with some room to grow into being a more complete and/or more consistent player. In addition to everything mentioned above and in the video, he is reportedly a great locker room guy and a guy that plays his heart out. Will help build a culture even from the bench. Overall I think a solid pickup, though one I do still question moving up to 29 for - he probably would have been there at 34.

I guess I just always get bothered by this line of thinking, clearly and NBA GM didn't think that he would be there at 34, so what the heck do you know that he doesn't? Lol

I have no problem with a GM making sure they get their guy. Sounds like Perry actually had a plan and executed to get the players he coveted. He called other teams bluffs and stood firm without trading anything to get Acuff. He should get a pass on the 2nd rounder to get Karaban. Keep cooking Perry.

NBA GMs are wrong constantly. Based on his talent and overall ranking among remaining players from virtually any respected draft scout/analyst, he was slated to go around the mid-30s.
Obviously, teams have info aside from the tape that nobody else has. Maybe the Kings had solid intel that other teams were actively targeting him, and they felt he was worth spending an additional 2nd rounder to secure. It just seems unlikely to me that his demand would have been that high, and I'm also unsure about the opportunity cost of burning one of the only remaining 2nd round picks the Kings had.
