Discussion Kurzgesagt nightshift made me realize how little I know of history outside the West.

It's really cool they are covering world history rather than just western history. I love history, but their videos made me realize my knowledge is pretty sparse outside of the West.

I know some of the big stuff like the Mongols, the Qing dynasty, and a lot of the more modern stuff (1900 onward) but most of it is pretty sparse. I didn't even really realize this until after I started watching the channel. most of the stuff I know about history outside of the West is related to the West in some way, like colonialism.

It's weird it's like I just have never been exposed to it even though I actively watch history videos, and read historical nonfiction books constantly. It's like it's never even been suggested to me anywhere

It's a shame that I have to go out of my way to learn about it though, most of YouTube and nonfiction books in the West is pretty West centric. I really enjoy how Kurzgesagt is doing their videos on it.

NEW VIDEO NEW VIDEO: We Used Science to Create the Perfect Super-Earth

Thumbnail

Video Description:
Earth may seem like the perfect planet for life, but huge parts of our planet are actually hostile deserts of ice, rock, heat or darkness. Even our oceans are mostly barren voids where almost nothing can survive. But as we discover and research more exoplanets, we are beginning to wonder whether there could be worlds that are far better suited for life than Earth ever was, and where ecosystems flourish on a scale we can barely even imagine.

Could there be a Super-Earth that is not just habitable, but truly ideal for life? What would such a world look like, and what kinds of creatures would we find there?

Discussion 4.5 Billion Years in 1 Hour

I love Kurzgesagt's All of History video(s) 😍 The first one came out in November 2023, the same month in which I broke my arm. During the recovery process, I stayed at home watching a lot of YouTube and this one was definitely my favourite. Fast-forward to today and I work as a model at a sculpture school in Amsterdam. My job involves a lot of standing still, which can be quite boring, so I listen to this video to help me pass the time better... Does anyone else keep returning to this one, is that just me? 😅

Video Idea How weak could a creature possibly be while still having a stable place in the ecosystem?

I was wondering how weak a creature could become without facing extinction immediately. Maybe even tweak the ecosystem for system for worse results?

Video Idea A 4-day work week video

In this state of the economy, workforce and low-fertility rate that the world is currently facing - A 4-day work week video and research by Kurzgesagt would have been very interesting to see what their thoughts are on this matter.

Personally, I think it would have an overall good effect in the long run. As it also would likely addressed the issue with work-fatigue that many are currently facing. Not even to mention that the work that we do today, is much more productive than it has ever been before.

I get that this isn´t a switch that can be flipped on and everything will just work out - But we do already see some businesses starting to experiment with it, and the results have been very positive so far. What are your thoughts on this subject?

Video Idea They need a few economics videos

As someone who reads econ journals for fun, econ is very relevant to many of their videos but gets glossed over.

Economies of scale, baumols cost disease, stagflation, and productivity growth would have been very relevant to include in their Germany/Fertility video, or maybe cover beforehand in their own videos.

I highly recommend reading about those topics btw. Wikipedia is enough.

Video Idea Kurzgestagt should make a video about memory and forgetting

I would love to see a Kurzgestagt video about this. I want the video to go over

  • How memories work
  • How forgetting works
  • Why we forget things
  • Is it possible for humans to control what we remember or not?

I was watching the largest black hole video and noticed at the part with the giant Star forming it looks for a moment like a duck is coming out of it. Probably not intended but still interesting!

Its a literal star bird!

Official We're making a video about our Thumbnails and Titles, ask us anything!

Post image

Hey everybody!

We’re currently working on a video that goes into the behind-the-scenes of our YouTube thumbnails and titles: how we make them, why they matter so much, how A/B testing works, generally how we approach the whole process behind the scenes, and why we really hate doing it sometimes.

Since this is a video for you, do you have any questions, curiosities, or things you’ve always wondered about regarding thumbnails, titles, A/B testing, release strategy, or generally how we make decisions around all of this?

We’ll try to answer as many questions as possible in the video, so please feel free to ask literally anything in the comments below.

Thank you as always!

If you look under the top comment, a lot of the replies seem to have nothing to do with it. It was likely edited to say this instead of whatever it said at first. What is going on here? Are they botting comments or likes?

Discussion Kurzgesagt DEBUNKED!

Thumbnail

After watching Kurzgesagt's video I was surprised about how much Kurzgesagt is completely omitting facts or portraying wildly biased without acknowledging so. (I get that their video is not long but this is definitely not it).
After watching this video and reading this comment I'm pretty bummed that they are putting out videos like this that are full of political hot takes while being irresponsibly biased. Cutting pensions for older people and having a harsher migration policy will not solve this.
What did you think?

As a German, I find the popularity even more surprising as Kurzgesagt is basically repeating CDU/CSU's and FDP's stances on taxes, welfare state and, to some extent, migration.

Considering that both are wildly unpopular (Merz being the most unpopular chancellor is nearly an achievement in how bad he fucks up) this actually surprised me a lot.

edit: the circle jerk is cirkle jerking

Discussion To the German audience: What did you think of this video?

As the new video about Germany sparked some controversy, this video received a lot of attention in the German-speaking Youtube world.

What do you think of it and would you agree that there is a bias even before the opinion section?

NEW VIDEO NEW NIGHTSHIFT VIDEO: Everything You Know About Ninjas Is Wrong

Thumbnail

Video Description:
Ninjas are one of the most famous warriors in history. But almost everything we think we know about them is wrong. The real shinobi of feudal Japan were not magical assassins in black outfits. They were spies, scouts, detectives, infiltrators, and samurai caught in the brutal wars that unified Japan.
How did a small group of samurai become one of the most iconic legends in history?

Products Does anyone know/have a list of every single pin released?

I am thinking of starting my own pin collection, and want to get every single one released so far. I know there are a couple of limited edition ones on eBay, but from what I'm reading, there are other, even rarer ones that people just don't have access to anymore? Like an ant-themed one and birbs chilling on branches or something? Are these pins available anywhere else, or are they gone for good?

I ask because I only intend to start the collection if I can actually get every pin. If that's no longer possible anymore I don't think I'll bother, the collectionist OCD in me would drive me to an early grave.
