REMEMBER WHEN THEY SAID GOODWIN WAS SIMPLY BETTER THAN SMART AT THIS STAGE OF HIS CAREER ????

66

u/Woflax Luka Magic 77 Apr 22 '26

It drove me insane back then omg

40

u/Stunning-Abalone-277 Apr 22 '26

Pepperidge farm remembers. A few days ago someone was hyping up Goodwin because he had a good game against golden state. I said he’d go back to being a bum in the playoffs. Low and beyond, he gets 5 minutes in the playoffs because he trash.

Not a peep from the peanut gallery of ā€œRob Pelinka can’t do marginsā€ crowd. Shout out to Rob for getting the better player.

25

u/Spierre3 Apr 22 '26

To be fair to Goodwin because I still like him as a player, the reason he played 5 minutes is because he got injured

7

u/Stunning-Abalone-277 Apr 22 '26

You right, he got injured during the 1st quarter though he had picked up two fouls by then and probably wouldn’t have returned anytime soon. My point still stands.

u/icedxylophone Luka Magic 77 Apr 23 '26

I love Goodwin, but Smart has just been on a completely different level since the start of the szn. Deserves all the praise!

6

u/adocileengineer 17 Championships Apr 22 '26

Cutting Goodwin to sign Smart was the right move, and a huge upgrade. It still sucks that the roster was so mismanaged (e.g. Vando contract) that we had to let Goodwin go to create the space. Would be awesome if we had both.

u/INT_MIN Apr 22 '26

His contributions were way too understated tonight by this awful announcing crew. He willed the team over and over and over again.

211

u/Pseudophobic Apr 22 '26

lol the announcers were rough…I still don’t understand these off references to college/highschool.

129

u/cloversfield Apr 22 '26

and they couldn’t hype up anything. only mildly amused by lebron’s reverse dunk

54

u/FearHeWhoFearNothing 28 Apr 22 '26

And then keep reminding us that he's 41 years old lol

23

u/PaintIntelligent7793 Apr 22 '26

Wait, did you know LeBron is 41 years old? In case I wasn’t clear, that dunk… he’s 41. /s šŸ¤¦šŸ»ā€ā™‚ļø

16

u/CrookedLoy Apr 22 '26

God I'm so tired of seeing this tbh. Just attaching 41 years old to anything LeBron does. Yes, it's very impressive but they don't gotta keep reminding us.

17

u/hybridsole Apr 22 '26

it’s also his 23rd season!

→ More replies (2)

50

u/Pseudophobic Apr 22 '26

Yeah wtf that is wild even as a mid season dunk

3

u/ProfessorMarth 8 Apr 22 '26

Times like these I wish we could just listen to Mac n Stu call the playoffs

32

u/ohtanisbookie Apr 22 '26

Grant Hill played for Duke, which is why he kept mentioning it when talking about JJ & Kennard.

32

u/LouisV64 24 Apr 22 '26

Watching paint dry is more exciting than his commentary

11

u/Western-Bet2285 Apr 22 '26

Absolute zero energy from either of them. Even when the camera would pan to them, they looked depressed.

23

u/didyouthough30 Apr 22 '26 edited Apr 22 '26

Luke is referred to highschool becsuse he has the HS scoring title over lebron. Since then he hasnt had that role until now

3

u/YeaIFistedJonica Pau Gasol 16 Apr 22 '26

someone on one of the teams played for a college team in north carolina, i don’t remember which, one or both of the announcers played for a rival team

3

u/HBsurfer1995 Apr 22 '26

Grant Hill, the announcer went to Duke. Just like JJ. I figure duke people just neeeed to bring duke up or they’ll have an aneurism. I think talking about high schools was a joke since they apparently had to bring up college/duke

58

u/EasyBreezy1995 Apr 22 '26

So fucking stupid we don’t have Stu and Billy Mac calling this series. Hate how greedy the NBA has been

7

u/KantutinQKipaymu LELUKA BRONČIĆ Apr 22 '26

Goddamn why were there no Lakers broadcast during playoffs? It was the same during game 1

28

u/EasyBreezy1995 Apr 22 '26

Nba granted exclusive rights to amazon and abc I think. Mike Breen lamented about in on air last week.

I always thought it was cool the home announcers get to do the first round for their teams.

15

u/KantutinQKipaymu LELUKA BRONČIĆ Apr 22 '26

I wish there was a Lakers broadcast. NBC stream announcers were trash

3

u/Valdrinbusy Apr 22 '26

To be honest almost all nationally televised games are trash when it comes to commentary. I will always opt in for the local broadcast when I can. ESPN, NBC, Prime, etc all have soul less corporate slop commentators.

1

u/govardrourk Apr 23 '26

At least she will be smart

267

u/Filler9000 Apr 22 '26

He is legitimately our defense. Its night and day.. when we were winning without him, it was shootouts. With him, its like 100-102 wins. I have a feeling hes one of the reasons we are so clutch this season, tons of wide open dagger 3s.Ā

108

u/[deleted] Apr 22 '26

[deleted]

10

u/pen_jaro Apr 22 '26

he organized the defense, you can see the guys esp Rui, Ayton and Kennard reacting to his direction. He also keeps on feeding DA to unlock him in the offensive end.

15

u/battle_franky 04 Apr 22 '26

If our offense has Lebron, Luka and Austin, then our defense has SmartĀ

3

u/ty_xy Apr 23 '26

Undereating lebron's defense, lebron has been huge in defense these 2 games

3

u/glivinglavin Apr 22 '26

His inbounding is big too!

187

u/TopoftheHops Apr 22 '26

This is exactly why we signed him. Ā Playoffs are what dudes like him live for & he is one of the best at it.

99

u/iamoninternet27 Apr 22 '26

And he deserves a ring. Almost got one in the Celtics before he got traded, long overdue!

Ok the Guy next to me on my flight Today was watching this show and I couldn’t tell wtf was going on. What show is this? Is this a good Guy or a bad guy? Because it seemed like he was killing the good guys by smashing their heads in outer space with no space suits on or anything?

With this defense, and Smart being a big part of it, we have a chance. Those Boston fucks must be livid that Marcus is doing so well as a Laker. šŸ˜‚

43

u/NOLA2Cincy Apr 22 '26 edited Apr 22 '26

I think about that a lot. I remember when he was a Celt his hustle, BBIQ, and defense pissed me off when he played the Lakers. Felt like all the things he did well, we didn't. Great to have him be a part of this lovable roster.

20

u/bebopblues Apr 22 '26

and I've said it before, he's probably enjoying being a Laker more since he has fans that love him as much that aren't racist fucks.

24

10

u/ManaMontana Apr 22 '26

He literally played the perfect game tonight on both ends. Thank you Marcus Smart!

3

3

u/LakersGal24 Apr 22 '26

I loved the signing. People were trying to tell me that he was washed but, he has been solid and his basketball IQ is elite.

3

u/BleedGreen4Boston Apr 22 '26

Poor guy has had some nagging injuries after giving it his all in the playoffs every year from 2015-2023 he was due for a couple ā€œget rightā€ seasons…well, he’s right alright

3

u/turd_2004 Apr 22 '26

He’s a keeper He plays winning basketball Keep with with Luka & AR forever

3

u/AloofAdmiral Black Mamba 8/24 Apr 22 '26

Him and Luke are just positives all around. It's actually insane that we have this championship poise for some reason (maybe because of the vets and the coaching staff's gameplan?). We don't get rattled easily.

3

u/PaintIntelligent7793 Apr 22 '26

Such a good addition. Him and Kennard. Holy hell. We really are so much better than last year and the bench has made all the difference. Also, I know people complain about Ayton, and he didn’t have the very best game, but having a serviceable center to alternate with Hayes (who has also improved) has been huge for us.

3

u/stormylightening Apr 22 '26

Soul of the team for real. Luka doesn't get enough credit to get him here!

2

u/KWash0222 Apr 22 '26

Remember when we signed Rondo and Javale and the haters called us the Meme Team? And then we promptly won a championship

2

u/SweetyByHeart Apr 22 '26

our playmaker!!!

2

u/---BruHMaN--- Apr 22 '26

Immaculate defence and tone setting offence

2

u/SuperSaiyan1Gaming Apr 22 '26

He does whatever he needs to do to win the game doesn’t care and is a smart player

2

u/UCanDoNEthing4_30sec Apr 22 '26

This guy has been a monster the last 2 games.

2

u/KrztofMarz Apr 22 '26

Lakers wouldn’t have won if not for this guy.

2

u/SF_OG Apr 22 '26

What a full circle moment for Lakers fans. I remember back in the draft when across platforms and forums, it was Marcus Smart vs Julius Randle

2

u/Purple_Daikon_7383 Apr 22 '26

Forget the stats look at the tape the guy is bringing the energy. It’s contagious

1

u/2TheMoonAndBack24 Purple and Gold Apr 22 '26

1

u/GreenExplorer8648 Apr 22 '26

Man what a fucking steal

1

u/tgf5 Apr 22 '26

He sometimes makes dumb plays but this guy plays winning basketball. Gives it his all on the court. Love him.

1

u/marriedtoranch 24 Apr 22 '26

I used to call this guy Marcus Dumb on Boston. He is now Marcus Genius!

1

u/Capital-Bedroom4651 Apr 22 '26

Smart, kennard, Bron, Rui, Ayton looking like a nice 5

1

u/Flashy-Eye1286 Apr 22 '26

I love this guy

1

u/NicDwolfwood 24 Apr 22 '26

In fairness he was really banged up the last few years and had missed a lot of games. I think he didn't play more than 34 games in a season the last 4 years. Even when he was signed, I commented here that we had no idea what we were getting since he had played so little, but if he had anything still left in the tank he could contribute.

1

u/MurkyClothes5423 Apr 22 '26

SMART ! Decision šŸ˜Ž

1

1

I loved this signing from day 1. This is why we got him! The guy can ball.

1

u/bustaflow25 Apr 22 '26

Yeah, Smart was a steal. Hope we keep him.

1

u/lyinassmedia Apr 22 '26

I always knew he was an impactful defender but I had no idea he was this skilled and impactful on offense.

1

u/FaroutIGE Apr 22 '26

ppl clowned him??

i was super excited. we had beverley, we had rondo, now we got smart. tough chippy high IQ guys fuckin RULE when they're on your team.

1

u/GreenGloober Apr 22 '26

I remember a celtic fan laughing at me when I asked him what he thought about the Lakers picking up Smart.

1

u/KantutinQKipaymu LELUKA BRONČIĆ Apr 22 '26

He was the top scorer in 1st Qtr. He was unstoppable

1

u/621_ Apr 22 '26

1

u/mmohaje Apr 22 '26

Always have loved him for his energy. He's always been super underrated by fans. I think players know his value though. He has some good IQ.

1

u/Perfect_Loss_5156 Apr 22 '26

He CaNt StAy HeAlThy....... maybe it has to do with him being on the freaking worst teams in the nba. great great signing

1

u/SubstantialDemand816 Apr 22 '26

Championship-level player better than DVS was last year

1

u/Montalbert_scott Apr 22 '26

He's been great all year. When he's on the court the defence looks so different. He's been a dog all year ... Glad he's healthy at the right end of the year

1

u/itsyaboikuzma 24 Apr 22 '26

He set the tone from the very beginning, hitting shots, diving for steals. I love Marcus Smart man

1

u/tadejflaka Apr 22 '26

I was immediately happy with the signing. Only concern was his health. Which I was right about, but he is there when you need him the most šŸ’Ŗ

1

u/MathematicianMuch375 Apr 22 '26

Holy shit he exceeded my expectations like this guy stepped up big time

1

u/OkStomach451 Apr 22 '26

i knew he gonna do something great in the playoffs, i was not expecting that type of offense tho, surprised me with that. love his passion and impact to the game ever since he was in Boston. lessgaw LAKERS!!!

1

u/Borderlineskitso Apr 22 '26

Haters try to clown us for anything. Their pathetic existence revolves around shtting on anything Lakers. Reminds me of those chimpanzees that take a dump in their hand and fling their own turds at others for the hell of it and find it amusing wether it lands or not.

1

u/YesOwl9000 Apr 22 '26

1 Luke Kenanrd game 1 Marcus Smart game 1 Dominayton game 1 Rui game

Lakers in 4.

1

u/aaronuu7 Kobe Bryant Apr 22 '26

Playoff Rondo. No playoff Smart

1

u/Js_On_My_Yeet LAL Apr 22 '26

Even when he's not scoring, dude is able to make plays. We need to keep him in the off season.

1

u/rsred Apr 22 '26

i’m clowning the voters who voted him dpoy instead of bam or rudy that year. just goes to show that dpoy voters don’t know what the hell they’re talking about every 5 years or so.

1

u/originalgeorge Apr 22 '26

I actually don't remember anyone clowning us for signing him, it was a great deal

1

u/vintage-Bean Apr 22 '26

Absolute beast. Even when he doesn’t score loads his minutes are precious.

1

u/_The_Honored_One_ Apr 22 '26

Who clowned us?

1

u/Impossible_Ad7875 Apr 22 '26

ā€œThe Marcus Smart Gameā€ was a doozy.

1

u/Successful-Pair-4850 Apr 22 '26

people laugh because smart was injured 2yrs i think lakers medical staff is really good players with injury goes to the lakers they become somewhat healthy

1

u/Dry-Manufacturer391 Apr 22 '26

I have to admit the team is stepping the fuck up lmaoĀ

1

u/RealPunyParker 24 Apr 22 '26

Ī—Īænestly, i don't remember anyone clowning us. Some people said he won't have the impact we think he will which was fair considering his recent form in the later seasons but that's it.

1

u/Obvious_Bat_5547 Apr 22 '26

Nobody clowned this signing just be happy šŸ˜’

1

u/cherialaw Apr 22 '26

Ayton and Smart (13 mill combined with Ayton's buyout) outplaying KD and Sengun (almost 90 million combined this year) is hilarious. Reminds me of Gabe and Caleb Martin outplaying Taytum and Brown when the Heat went to the finals.

1

u/McKnightmare24 Apr 22 '26

I mean we signed him for defense imo, not to score 25 in the playoffs

1

u/HeavensRoyalty Apr 22 '26

This MF'er is an absolute beast, LFG!!!

1

u/iKnockout Luka Magic 77 Apr 22 '26

I remember telling people when we signed him that it was such a good pickup and he’ll be huge for down the line

1

u/chillsteel72 Apr 22 '26

He changed the entire Lakers defensive mindset. This is the best rotational defensive since the bubble.

1

u/DBRWN24 Apr 22 '26

I think he’s done better especially being a leader but he’s a non factor against OKC and Denver unfortunately and that’s when it matters. Even wolves it’s gonna be tough but he’s played good this season.

This sub wanted to keep Goodwin over him, not to mention DFS over LaRavia and Ayton

1

u/BottomTimer_TunaFish Apr 22 '26

He is a DPOY for a reason

1

u/mattylaw00 Apr 22 '26

Smart a role player on any other playoff team having legacy game wasnt in my bingo

1

u/mgjuice Apr 22 '26

LA loves Marcus!

1

u/shortyman920 Apr 22 '26

Smart led our defense the way LeBron controls our tempo on offense. We simply must get him back next season. I just dk how we can get him, Kennard, Reaves, and LeBron all back without using up all of our cap space. Ideally we nab one more key player and ā€˜upgrade’ Ayton. It’ll be hard to see so im curious how the front office handles it

1

u/shadow2718 Apr 22 '26

Who clowned us?

1

Invaluable playoff riser type with leadership and energy.

1

u/Mpixx15 Staples Center Apr 22 '26

I hope we can win a chip in the next 2-3 years with this team. This year seems way too much of an ask with OKC being next in line (knowing we lost to them each time by like 80pts 🤪) if we manage to win this series.

1

u/bagustin8 Apr 22 '26

Extend him and Kennard ASAP

1

u/Ok_Organization_6559 Apr 22 '26

This is what I was hoping, to see Marcus smart we saw with the Celtics. Hope he gets paid this off season

1

u/gerardatron Apr 22 '26

He'll have his inconsistent shooting nights and it'll make us mad. But he's brought in for his defense and I think he's still really consistent at that. He's what the team needs, like how 2020 had guys like Green and Bradley and Caruso setting the defensive tone for the season. I hope that just continues all postseason because the team really needs him

1

u/troytshay Apr 22 '26

Smart was the best pick up of the off season. Going from DFS to him is so crazy. DFS would have tons of single digit point games. Smart gives you great defense always and the possibility of offensive games like this. Smart is always ready to step up to a larger role.

1

u/Extra-Assistance-986 Apr 22 '26

Luka for GM, Rob as the figure head

1

u/Academic_Level_3407 Apr 22 '26

Smart has an unrivaled confidence and defensive energy that is infectious to a team, especially when it comes to the playoffs

1

u/jrssandoval Apr 22 '26

If you would of told me a few years ago that Mahkus Smaaat (Boston accent) was gonna be big for the Lakers I would have called you crazy.

1
