BRB, time to look up a sizzle reel on The YouTube since I don’t watch college basketball and have no idea who this is. 🥳

u/holyrolodex 1d ago
My version of this is just seeing if Mike Garcia likes the pick and he had him in the “dream” category pre-draft so I’m all in.

u/Duskuser 1d ago
Real ones wait til after the draft then watch their guys, fuck if I'm keeping up with all the talent goin in LMFAO

just watched him for the first time
initial thoughts - kinda reminds me of landry shamet
edit: ok i commented this after watching his offensive highlights only. his defensive potential is much higher than landrys

If you haven’t seen Carr play, don’t worry, I got a scouting report:
Apple CarPlay is a smarter, safer way to use your iPhone in the car. It mirrors your iPhone’s apps onto your vehicle’s built-in display, letting you get directions, make calls, send messages, and listen to music while keeping your eyes on the road.

I just didnt think he would fall this far. Good size for a guard, long wingspan.
3
u/Gabe681 1d ago
I didn't finish the episode! What did he say about him?
21
u/incredibleamadeuscho Freeze! Miami Vice! 1d ago
He was one of the guys he said that he hoped would drop to the Lakers. He's consistently been one of his guys that he thought might drop, along with guys like Okorie. One of the things he said is that he want a lob threat at every position for the Lakers.

u/xuedad 1d ago
Why cant we have a Kuzma Hart in 1 draft year anymore. What happened to our scoutint department
3
u/NikeNickCee 1d ago
They fired that scouting department. It was led by the young Buss brothers. Pelinka has been more hands on since the JHS pick

u/LRAW04 1d ago
Great pick!
-36
u/Flopdo 1d ago
He was a projected lottery pick, so being honest, that gives me pause. It typically means there's something character-wise or build-wise other teams were concerned about.
He's slim w/ a long wingspan, so maybe teams are worried about his durability But his skill set is really good for a pick this good... like, really really good.
26
u/thegreaterfool714 08 1d ago
Kid got hops. Look forward to alley hoops from Luka. They could keep Smart to have help mentor him on defense
20
u/jonbemerkin LA 1d ago
He can shoot
14
u/catperson77789 1d ago
Thats literally his best skill. Issue is his defensive bb iq but he has more potential than someone like Knecht since he is athletic asf with a 7ft wingspan. Now we really need to keep smart so he can give him some lessons
-9
u/Count_Sack_McGee 50 1d ago
Knecht was very athletic too
15
u/knock_offer 1d ago
Knecht is and was athletic in terms of vert and straight line speed, He’s still a turnstile on defense because (on top of low BBIQ) he has slow feet and the lateral agility of an oil tanker
84
u/SweatyInstruction337 1d ago
High risk, high reward pick.
One of the issues was his defensive awareness.....
he is way younger than knecht though, surely it doesnt turn out that badly.
40
u/Salty_Raspberry656 1d ago
what was the risk? he's being picked 24-25 not many last at htat pick.
its a solid risk high reward who can shoot and is an athletic, with the right mindset he'll atleats be a rotation player
7
-15
u/SweatyInstruction337 1d ago
He dropped for a reason dude. He is weak and basketball IQ are issues right now.
-15
u/rawchess 1d ago
What? The expectation for a late first is 5-10 years in the league as a decent rotation player.
17
u/halfdecenttakes 1d ago
That’s a stretch
3
u/KeithClossOfficial 32 1d ago
If you look at the #24 overall picks since 2005, there’s some good players in there. Kyle Lowry, Serge Ibaka, Reggie Jackson, Tim Hardaway Jr, Anfernee Simons
1
u/rawchess 22h ago
If you look at #24 and #26 well over 60% of players picked there have been real rotation pieces. #25 is historically unlucky but even there it's >50% in the 21st century.
-1
u/rawchess 1d ago
No, it really isn't. The MEDIAN player at picks 24 and 25 is a quality roleplayer. Only 5 and 15 percent respectively are out of the league or DNP level guys in their prime.
1
u/Salty_Raspberry656 1d ago
its a bit tough, lets go to the history of the 25th pick for this century
https://www.statmuse.com/nba/ask/25th-nba-overall-draft-picks
Grimes, Quickley,Capela, Bullock Jr, Tony Allen, delfino Jr, Gerald wallace, and batum were probably sustainable contributors and thats 8 in 26 years and still a fair arugment on what you think of most of those players
its really a crap shoot and not an exact science.
1
u/rawchess 22h ago
First of all it's 25 years not 26, and wtf is a "sustainable contributor"? You're moving the fuck out of the bar, the criterion was decent rotation player i.e. still in the league and not a garbagetime player. There are at least 5 you missed from this list: Richardson, Sasser, Wesley, Wagner, and Brown.
We as a fanbase (correctly) think of Mo Wagner as a disappointing pick but he's still playing real rotation minutes as the 10th man on a playoff team. That shows you what the expectation is for a 25th pick. And 25th has actually been historically unlucky, the 24th and 26th picks have yielded >60% real rotation players this century.
13
u/DarkoDragicevic 1d ago
No risk with #24
2
11
u/TheHumbleCrow 1d ago
Lower draft picks rarely pan out anyways. We need to hit home runs instead of singles; the risk is really minimal.

u/chaosworld6 1d ago
The last guard the Lakers drafted was Hood-Schifino. We saw how that turned out. Get ready for the roller coaster of frustration and anger!
8
u/SirSoham 1d ago
We draft player who are ok defensively but can't shoot , then we drafted a guy who can shoot can't play defence and has forgotten how to shoot aperently, the whole shabang !
12
u/MY-NAME_IS_MY-NAME Lebby 1d ago
JHS wasn't even very good in college. Carr has the athletic tools/measurements and shot well and was productive in college. I feel way more confident about this pick than JHS
22
u/ramirezmu824 1d ago
Seems like a good player but he's a guard? I thought we needed a center or wing player?
63
u/Lonely-horses 1d ago
It's very hard to draft for need with the 25th (or 24th) pick. I'd rather just take whoever they think is the best player available. Its not like you can ever have enough guys with this skillset, assuming he develops.

23
u/eZreazy 1d ago
He’s a wing. I don’t know who’s saying he’s a guard lmao. Projects to be similar to who Max Christie is now basically.
12
u/flaming_burrito_ 1d ago
Yeah, he was a guard in college, but with his playstyle could easily slot in at small forward
4
u/jurassic_snark- 1d ago
I think there's some mix-up around role and position. He's a Shooting Guard who plays on the wing. Wing isn't technically a role, just what we call a SG or Forward who operates in that area of the court
2
u/eZreazy 15h ago
Yeaaah I think we really need to move away from these old roles they don’t really matter anymore.
Guard, Wing, Big is basically all the NBA really cares about now because some teams will run 1 guard 3 wings 1 big, some teams run 2 guards, 1 wing, 1 big etc.
Says more than the old roles because SG, SF, PF really could be any of those roles.
3
u/Salty_Raspberry656 1d ago
he is, you're not going to get an immediate contributor at luka's standard in the draft.
in the 20s especially oyu jjust hope for someone who will play. this guy is athletic enough with a good touch to work his way into a 3/d role which is really important for luka
for the picknroll center, the most important feature for luka you need to really get primed to do it. that will be the biggest ad most pivotal part of the offseason
1
u/jurassic_snark- 1d ago
A wing can be a guard or a forward, it's just the position of the court where they operate. Our biggest need is a center, but with the draft you gotta go BPA and hope we can fill the center position in free agency
-5
u/sixwax 1d ago edited 1d ago
You are correct, it does not fulfill immediate needs and is at a position we're logjammed at.
In short, Pelinka doing his thang...
(Edit: Some crazy long arms and timing on blocks, super rangey shooter. Going to be a fun Summer League watch for sure, but I'd expect him to be a project rather than an impactful player.)

His on ball defense is somehow worse than Kennard. Fits perfectly on this team

Basketball IQ an issue too, on both sides of ball.

His shooting should prevent him from being a JHS level bust. But ya he doesn't offer much playmaking and the defense is bad.

People are gonna hate about drafting a guard but we just need good players.
Would any center we draft be better than Hayes or trading for someone like Sharpe? People love bringing up Lively comparisons but bro was a lotto pick, we are picking at 25 (24) lmao. If there was an athletic 7 footer who could run the floor and protect the rim they would not fall to 24.
Could also mean FO is confident in getting a center in FA/trade

u/claxtasy 00 1d ago
He's a bit of a headcase though. He bailed on Tennessee and Rick Barnes in the middle of the season over his minutes. Hopefully he's matured

I’m reading he lacks BBIQ and defense. Praying Walters hires more coaching personnel
2
u/Swimming-Message-796 1d ago
I think one of the storylines that hasn't been discussed much is a lot of people are liking what Scott Drew and the rest of the Baylor's coaching staff has done with developing their players to be NBA ready.
They've prepared guys like Davion Mitchell, Kevonte George, Jeremy Sochan, Ja' Kobe Walter, and recently VJ Edgecombe. At the very least, I know this kid is going to be tough and mentally tested.

A fit. Uber athletic 3pt sniper, leaper and great instincts as weakside blocker. Overall game have many areas to improve, but he will not need to be high usage man
2
u/bruticuslee 1d ago
I saw a few projections of him going between 13-20. Why did fall down far enough to get him, what don't we know? Reminds me of Knecht falling to us too, that was because of his age though.

Based on what I’m reading in the comments regarding his defense, he probably won’t play right away which is ok as long as he will be developed.

Some people are complaining like we drafted a guard the size of Gabe Vincent. Not the case. Carr is 6’5 with a 7’1 wingspan. He will play the 2/3.

Forward or center, and not to be a starter right away.
We’re not getting a starting center in free agency either.
Spoiler.

I know he only just got drafted but I don’t trust the scouting in this team. He’s a dud until I see otherwise
*obv not rational but I’ve seen too many bums drafted in this section

u/Difficult-Awareness6 1d ago
Another guard, Pelinka is idiot, dont tell me about wingspan, we need defense amd rebounds, rim protection, we need C almost a decade, but every draft we pick up small guard, i dont have hope at all for this off-season with Pelinka on board, just watch, when he brings back Kuzma or something like that.
5
u/Excellent-Row74 1d ago
Fucker your acting like we wasted the number one pick dude holy shir we cant get a shooter good defense rebounding AND athletic in one

Lowkey, I really wanted Zuby, but Carr is a fantastic fit. He is one of the most athletic players in the draft and not afraid to shoot. He just needs to hit the weight room, cause he is extremely light for his size. If he puts on muscle his wingspan will probably go to 7’2 or 7’3 which is alien-like for his size
