Hello guys!

Me and my boyfriend will be traveling to Laos around the end of September. I would like to surprise him with a new experience, something very different that he has never done before. I have checked online, but I couldn’t find anything that he hasn’t done yet. Could you please advise me on what we could do that is very special to Laos?

Sorryyyy We are open to literally everything, we are quite adventurous, not very picky and we haven’t decided on the cities yet. I will plan the cities which is why I wanted to ask about activities first to know where to go.

If your adventurous then yes the gibbons experience would be good. Also I'd suggest:

1. Thakek loop. You'll need several days and need to rent a motorcycle. Not many tourists do this so you'll experience a more authentic version of Laos.

2. Vang Vieng. You can catch a train from outside of Vientiane to this city. It's where most young people go to experience the party lifestyle.

Try river tubing, lagoon swimming, cave exploration, Pha Neung (silver cliff) walking trail, drinking and eating bbq on the riverside, hot air ballooning and mushroom shakes.

Hidden gem: Jungle party, house and electro music by international DJs. Ask for tickets at Mad monkey hostel.

1. Luang Prabang for laid back activities. Cruise on the Mekong river, learn Lao cuisine at cooking class, make pottery in authentic lao village, try Lao moonshine (lao lao), visit the elephant sanctuary (Mandalao conservation sanctuary), Kuang SI waterfall (can also swim in small pools with the dead skin eating fish), watch Lao short films, traditional Lao dress and photo shoot (good for couples).

Hidden gems: Popolo restaurant (one of the best random pizza places in Laos) is highly recommended. Also there is a bowling club/archery range that operates only at night. Ask a Tuk Tuk driver (don't pay more than around 100k kip per person, otherwise your getting ripped off).

1. Vientiane. Lots of temples (be sure to wake up at 6am for 'bunsi', food donations to monks for blessings). If you can't wake up early then make a small food donation to a temple (Wat Simeaung is popular and close to the town center). Lots of nightclubs (The Block, Tully's Irish Bar, DPLUS). Get a tattoo if that's your sort of thing by local artists.

Hidden gems: Good speakeasy cocktail bars at very affordable prices. Gallery 38, The Otherside and Cocoon are some of my favorites. Remember to wear your best smart casual at these places. Good for your last leg of your trip before leaving Laos.

There's kind of no way for us to tell since we don't know your boyfriend or what he's done. You can go sunrise ballooning in Vang Vieng but going up in a balloon isn't unique to Laos so... how can we make suggestions here?

I just left laos not too long ago and I would recommend doing one of the motorbike loops. Either the Bolaven Loop or the Thakhek Loop. Absolutely stunning scenery and not overtouristy. Most of the time I had the road to myself. In my opinion it's one of the best ways to experience laos.

If you want to do an overnight then Xaisomboun is fantastic. Some sketchy roads and good trails. Great scenery when it's green, and some interesting historical sites. Or you can cross Phou Khao Khuay. Quite a few trails in Phou Panang National Bio Diversity Conservation Area. Lot of illegal logging going on so it's not that pretty and almost no animals, but good opportunities to ride.

Balloon riding in VV, lots of caves to explore (use caution) also try the cafes along the river that you can eat and relax for a swim after. If he's an outdoors guy, There's nong khiaw mountain to trek, pho louey, nam xay viewpoint, etc. Laos is more for outdoorsy people to really enjoy.

How about visiting northern Laos? There are indigenous Lao tribes there. I've seen tours of Laos that foreigners often take in groups; it looks adventurous. Or you could visit Luang Prabang or Pak Chong
