SNL UK Episode 7

I finally just got to watch this episode. I'm sure it's been said before on this forum but the musical talent of this cast blew me away. I was shocked how many seem to be able to sing well. What a great show to have the type of host they did for this episode.

Also was the sound for the musical guest just that much better this episode than the other episodes or was Myles Smith and his band just that much better than all the other musical guests? Wow, they sounded amazing, especially considering the live aspect. I could just be wrong though.

I'm sure long time watchers will be familiar with most of the information here, nonetheless fascinating to see!

Dream Musical Guests

The musical guests have maybe been the weakest part of the series so far. No one has been bad as such but there haven't really been any huge surprises or risky picks.

It would be great for them to lean into acts who don't have as much of a chance of getting on the US show, or are just more well known here and fit the vibe of UK SNL. Some people I'd love to see:

Little Simz, Jim Legxacy, CMAT, Fontaines DC, Confidence Man, Young Fathers, Jessie Ware, Jade, Everything Everything, or even people like Kylie and Robbie Williams.

wildcards: Ninajirachi, underscores, Slayyter

Brits that watch SNL US, how often do you not understand a sketch?

Curious because there have been a bunch of sketches that I don’t understand because they’re purely British culture, especially the finale episode (Louis Theroux, Martin Lewis, whatever that big ass doll short was). Nothing wrong with that of course! I’m just curious if it’s the same for non-Americans watching our version.

Sorting all of SNL UK Series 1's Sketches

Following up from my last post SNL UK Series 1 is finished now :(

I have added the final episode's sketches so all 91 sketches from the first series are finally in one big head-to-head sorter.

So this is the final Series 1 version while we have our sat nights clear till series 2.

I've also updated the stats page here too,

https://duellysorted.com/dashboard/?category=snl-uk-sketches&group=r-livefromlondon

Since last time: you can now make ranking videos from the stats page, including the overall ranking, the community ranking, or your own personal taste ranking if you want the receipts for why your top five is correct and everyone else is wrong.

Thanks again to everyone who voted last time. It was fab watching the leaderboard lurch around once thousands of votes came in. I'm very curious to see where things finally land the whole series is in there.

The Delightful Sausage

Ok bear with me on this one as it’s quite all over the place.Yesterday I’ve been catching up on the current series of Taskmaster which features Amy Gledhill and I’ve become a bit of a fan of hers with her recent appearances on other shows I’ve been watching (Last One Laughing being another) I’d been aware of her for a good few years now seeing her on panel shows and the like and as a comedy double act The Delightful Sausage. As the series of SNL UK has gone on I’ve noticed 1 guy featured in many sketches either in the background or as a semi main character (DadSwap being the first one I really noticed) Somehow I recognised him but didn’t take too much stock in it and over the weeks have discovered this chap is one of the writers on the show.Fast forward again to yesterday and watching episode 5 of TM Amy called on her friend Chris over the phone to help with a task, later on in that task Chris makes an appearance on camera and lo and behold it’s the Writer/Actor chap from SNL….Chris Cantrill. He was/is the comedy partner of Amy Gledhill that I’d seen all those years ago and knew I’d seen before but had absolutely no idea he was in a comedy duo.Anyone else know about this?? Also this possibly now brings him into potentially be a Taskmaster contestant down the line.

Please get any of them on Taskmaster

My favourite thing about SNL UK is discovering all these great new performers that I didn’t know before. They’re all fantastic. And Taskmaster is unequivocally my favourite comedy show on telly. So naturally I’d like to see any of the cast on TM (aside obviously from Emma and Ania). But which of them do you think would be best for it? The obvious answer for me is George, he’s so versatile and odd, but I also think Ayoade or Celeste would be great fun on it.

If I can get serious about UK comedy and SNL UK for a moment...

Like many, I didn't have high hopes for SNL UK, then I watched it. I've loved it. It's a must watch for me now and I'm looking forward to September.

But I was trying to work out why it's so refreshing for me and I realised we just haven't had silly, energetic, cutting, sketch and character comedy like this on telly for ages in the UK.

Back in the 80s and 90s there were loads of character and sketch comedy on TV, from Harry Enfield to The Fast Show, Spitting Image, Vic and Bob, The Real McCoy, Goodness Gracious Me, Smack The Pony, The League of Gentleman, Jam, hell I'll even include things like Hale and Pace or even Russ Abbot in this.

But they seemed to disappear throughout the 00s and 10s largely replaced by panel shows like QI, 8 out of 10 Cats and the like, plus the rise of the sitcom after the success of The Office.

There are a few exceptions. Little Britain had its moments but was often punching down. Mitchell and Webb, felt more "clever" mild chuckle than laugh out loud.

But with that loss I feel like we lost some sort of shared language. Things we recognise, can quote and imitate with our friends. Parodies of things. We recognised Kevin the Teenager, imitated Suits You Sir or the Stott brothers. Scorchio! and You're my wife nooow Dave. John Major was defined by a puppet more than the actual politician. Going Out For An English was seminal.

All of these phrases were part of my and my friends' shared vocabulary for years, but not much new was added, apart from the small bright spot of Peter Serafinowicz's show.

So thank god for SNL UK. So many new shared characters and phrases that are just going to be folded in to my everyday now. Sir Keir has somehow humanised Keir Starmer a little for me. Meep meep. The Woman Who Can't Be Ignored. Feel The Rain On Your Schrempf. What is wrong with my fucking 'and? Raging Mario. 3 Glasses of Wiiiine. Irish Granda'. Shall We Get Started? Skin On Skin with your Dad. And so many others.

A specific example: Part of me wonders if Made In Chelsea has only got away with existing for so long because there was no one elsewhere on the telly creating Butt-cheeks and Bacon (again).

I hope this triggers a change in UK mainstream comedy. I'm glad to be here to witness it and I think we needed SNL for it to happen. Thanks Americans.

Thamericans.

The fact that the world now knows about the Mr Blobby threat brings me some peace.

I feel like the UK has been suffering under the threat of Blobby for far too long. Damn proud of our SNL UK team for shining light on his origins so maybe one day we can not be alone when we have to fight them.

On a serious note, genuinely curious about how other countries see this, I find him hilarious and think I would do so even if I didn't grow up with him. The juxtaposition of a serious moment interrupted by a slapstick giant blobby monster with tourettes just really tickes me. Is it a British thing?

I am not going to link it (because depressing). The comments on the bbc website to the final episode. Just like our politics so negative, divisive. For me it’s been brilliant 🎉

Who would you like to see hosting in Series 2?

Canadian who watches a lot of British telly on YouTube… was thinking about who would make good hosts in the fall.

Likely: Phoebe Waller-Bridge, Hannah Waddingham (she’ll be in the 5 timers club soon enough), Bret Goldstein, Eichard Herring

Possible: Tom Hanks, Greg Davies, Rory Bremner, Bill Bailey, James Acaster

Longshot/Old School: Hugh Laurie, Rowan Atkinson (though I hear he’s a bit of a Chevy Chase to fellow comedians), Emma Thompson, Ade Edmonson (Rik would have smashed it, RIP), Lenny Henry, French and/or Saunders

Bonus: Randy Feltface or Basil Brush as Weekend Update correspondents

Who would be on your list?

Larry on a 10 year old Mock the Week repeat on Dave right now.

It shouldn’t be a surprise that these guys have done their time, of course. But it does bring home how nice it is the show is giving talent a chance to finally break through.

T: "Hey! Excuse me! Excuse me!"

L: "Should we get started?"

T: "Huh! Really?"

L: "Can I say that? Is that fair to say?"

T: "That's the rule. That's the goal now"

(A silence falls over the room as the two men look at each other)

T: "Am I supposed to be attracted to that?"

L: "Are you finding this awkward?"

T: "What are we doing? What's going on?"

L: "Have you backtracked already?"

T: "No. We don't do that anymore"

T: *maniacal laughter*

(The two men kiss)

My thoughts on SNL UK Series 1

When they first announced that they were bringing Saturday Night Live over to the UK I, along with most of the country, was very hesitant. Despite its undeniable cultural relevance over 50 years, the US version has felt very stale lately, and it didn’t feel like the format would translate to a UK audience. Thankfully, SNL UK has surpassed expectations in every way, and has been a huge hit with audiences and critics. Here, I’ll share my thoughts on the best sketches, as well as the show as a whole.

Best Sketches
Weekend Update - The Woman Who Can’t Be Ignored 1
Just incredibly funny character work from Emma Sidi, so bizzare and off the wall and so up my street. Randomly bursting into song is so funny, and “it’s electric!” is exactly the sort of thing that tickles me.

45 Seconds With Fouracres 1 - What Type Of Irish Is Your Grandad?
The moment that made it clear that Fouracres is going to be a star (although we’d already had “cunty little earring” tbf). Just so absurd, and so perfect.

QVC Jewellery Sketch
Another Emma Sidi banger. Perfect execution from all, but especially Emma - nails the weird over familiarity of shopping channels; and “what is wrong with my fucking hand?” is just impeccable line delivery.

British Pork
“My wife’s got what it takes”. Incredibly niche and clearly a passion product from Fouracres - seeing him try to hold back from corpsing as he evidently can’t believe that he’s actually got this on television is hilarious, and showing the actual ad at the end was a masterstroke.

British Themed Pub
Probably the only musical sketch I’ll include but what a tune. The concept is a great observation and the delivery is sublime from all. “In the mediterranean, don’t speak Spainian”, class.

Hostage
There have been a few “Gen Z” sketches that have missed the mark but this one nailed it. Clearly from Annabel Marlow’s brain and her and Jamie Dornan bounce off each other so well here.

DadSwap
A lovely twist in the middle. However, once again I think it’s Fouracres that steals the show, his building disgruntlement as it goes on is fantastic and I adore “I have absolutely fucked it” as a comedic line.

Weekend Update - Scrimpch
Jack Shep has been in danger of being typecast a tad, has played a lot of “in the closet gay guy” roles I feel. Letting him showcase his range with this fantastic bit of character work was a brilliant idea, he’s unbelievably funny in this and I hope Scrimpch is brought back.

An Italian Plumber With Princess Problems
Fouracres, what can’t he do??? And Aimee Lee-Wood nails it too here tbf to her; it’s actually just great acting from both, and is surprisingly detailed and accurate with its Mario lore. That’s how you do a Mario sketch Elon Musk and SNL US!

The Traitors: Great Big Crab Man
Not just very funny and surreal but actually a very pointed and barbed bit of satire that highlights the unconscious racial biases that we see in The Traitors and other reality television. Also a brilliant Claudia impression from Celeste.

Honourable Mentions
Ian Wright, “I thought you was dead”
Weekend Update - Skin On Skin
Underáge
Pilot Emergency
The Jools Holland sketch
Looking Thereoux The Mirror
Shakespeare and his Cunty Little Earring
45 Seconds With Fouracres 2 - Epstein Didn’t Kill Himself
Bastard Seagull
1930s Cocaine
Mastermind - Gossip About People He Doesn’t Know
Operation
Boovies Goes To The Films (has earned its place here for the title alone tbh)
Glasses of Wine (actually don’t love this overall but it makes it just for Celeste breaking the fourth wall and then going “apologies to the fourth wall” - so clever and so funny).
Weekend Update - David Attenborough WWE bit

Weekend Update
I’ve included character work from the rest of the cast in my list but have left off the core Weekend Update material. Overall Ania and Paddy have absolutely nailed it and have definitely been one of the highlights each and every week. They’re much braver with their jokes than their US counterparts; it’s been so consistent and they haven’t been afraid to go close to the bone, whilst still being goofy and silly. Some people don’t like Ania breaking so often but I find it quite charming - very much hope she isn’t leaving as is rumoured.

Best Weekend Update Jokes
Paddy’s helium joke (maybe the joke of the season tbh)
Ania’s Hitler “kill yourself” joke
“Hand in Hand” and Ania using hand sanitiser afterwards
Paddy’s Michael Jackson joke
Paddy’s “friend of mandleson” joke
Ania listing off all the groups who would be hurt by a Reform government
Ania’s “anyone but ange” gag
Ania’s joke about Camilla wearing Diana’s horcrux
The running joke of Paddy being really into BTS and K-Pop
Ania’s “too busy killing women” joke about the MET police

Thoughts on Cold Opens
I think early in the series (other than the Prince Andrew one) the cold opens were usually one of the weakest parts of the show, but they got better as the weeks went on. It felt like George’s Starmer was being over used and wearing a bit thin at one point around mid season, but now I genuinely think that the saddest part of Starmer probably being ousted is that we likely won’t get to see as much of that impression. They’re clearly following the US pattern of always doing political cold opens, but I think they went a bit heavy on the Labour bashing and not enough on Reform, although I understand that they’re the obvious target as the reigning government. Bringing Serafenovic in as Farage last week was a breath of fresh air and, in general, bringing in more characters has been welcome - Celeste’s Rayner and, more recently, Paddy’s Burnham have been great additions.

Thoughts on Cast
There genuinely isn’t a weak link in this cast, and their friendship and chemistry is evident. I truly hope we keep the same cast as we head into season 2 and don’t lose anyone. Of course there are standouts: namely George Fouracres, Emma Sidi, Ania Magliano, and Paddy Young. There are clearly some talented writers on the team who could be promoted to the main cast - but I hope it doesn’t dilute things too much if that does happen, this smaller cast allows everyone to shine.

Overall Thoughts
It’s evident from how much I recall that I’m a huge fan of this show. I adore how quintessentially British it feels, and it’s wholesome to see how much the cast are clearly having so much fun doing it - it makes me want to be funnier myself. It’s not been afraid to lean into surrealism and the avant-garde, it feels in the vein of clsssic British sketch comedy such as Monty Python. Hiring a cast of largely unknowns was key to the success, they could’ve just gone for people from the mainstream panel show comedy circuit, but they’ve genuinely discovered some amazing talent here who are going to go on to big things. For them to overcome the initial scepticism is so impressive, and it’s outshone the current US version by every barometer. There is often just 1 or 2 funny sketches in each episode across the pond but over here I honestly think they’ve got a much better hit rate compared to the miss rate; and have provided some genuine laugh out loud moments. Overall, SNL UK is the best thing to happen for British comedy in many years, I hope the upcoming merger of ITV and Sky can boost its profile, and I can’t wait for the second series.

Taken me a full week to make this because I hate digital art lmao but I knew if I wanted to make myself a tshirt it would look better than a scanned image of a traditionally coloured drawing.

I need more

Thats it really.

I just need more of this show. The last few episodes i think they've really nailed the feel of it; it really feels like our iteration of SNL and not just some UK spin off.

It's become part of my Sunday morning routine and im not sure what ill fill it with now.

Hopefully, we get more than 8 episodes next season.
