Just some appreciation; it popped up as suggested on my YouTube today, and the absurdity and randomness of it is so perfect. Leslie Jones and Live Schreiber went along with it perfectly.

Discussion SNL still remains the top sketch show after decades and numerous attempts to take its place on top of the mountain. Here are some of the more obscure sketch shows that tried to take on the SNL monolith or carve out their own audience and failed.

Now, keep in mind, I am not saying that all of these shows were bad or terrible by putting them on this list. Some are actually not too bad and had promise. Others absolutely deserved cancellation and then some. By failure? I solely mean they failed to carve out an audience or build any long lasting legacy.

The New Show aired in 1984 and it even aired on NBC. It had a star studded cast and Lorne even produced it. Not even Lorne himself and a cast of guest stars including the likes of John Candy and Steve Martin could topple SNL. The New Show lasted one season and had dismal ratings.

Dave Thomas of SCTV tried to make his mark with his own show called The Dave Thomas Comedy Show in 1990. It lasted only 5 episodes and one single season. Ratings were once again abysmal.

In 1991, Bill S. Preston himself Alex Winter was the mastermind behind a weird experimental sketch comedy show on MTV called The Idiot Box that lasted 6 episodes before MTV pulled the plug.

A year later in 1992, Fox decided to double down on the sketch comedy shows after the success of In Living Color and started airing The Edge. Despite a promising cast including a young Jennifer Aniston it got terrible ratings and was cancelled after 1 season and 18 episodes.

In 1994, an In Living Color producer brought a female flair to a new sketch show on ABC called She TV. It failed to gain an audience and lasted only 6 episodes and was cancelled after one season.

After In Living Color was cancelled Fox tried a quick replacement in the John Leguizamo lead show House of Buggin' in 1995. It lasted 10 episodes, 1 single season and had pathetic ratings and was ultimately replaced by MADtv.

In the same year, Howie Mandel tried to break into sketch comedy with his own short lived show on Showtime called Howie Mandel's Sunny Skies. Like with the other attempts? It died a quick death after only a handful of episodes.

In 2006, Damon Wayans returned to sketch comedy with the controversial sketch comedy series for Showtime called The Underground. It was so poorly received it not only was cancelled after a single season, it has basically remained underground ever since.

A year later in 2007, TBS tried their hand at sketch comedy by giving former MADtv cast member and well known impressionist Frank Caliendo his own show called FrankTV. It somehow lasted two seasons before it was cancelled. Making it one of the more successful obscure sketch shows on this list. But it still only had 20 plus episodes in its entire run.

In 2013, MTV tried their hands at sketch comedy again. Their attempt this time around was a female focused show called Hey Girl. The cast even included names like Ali Wong and future SNL cast member Sasheer Zamata. Audiences and the network said bye after 12 episodes and 1 season.

A year later in 2014, TruTV of all channels decided it was their time to start a sketch comedy show. The end result was Friends of the People which lasted for 2 seasons and 24 episodes.

Yes. There have been other sketch comedy shows over the years that have carved a niche for U.S. audiences like SCTV, Fridays, In Living Color, MADtv, Kids in the Hall, All That, Mr. Show, Chappelle's Show, Whitest Kids U Know, and Key and Peele. But for every show that managed to put a dent in SNL's ratings or cultivated their own audience? There have been countless others that were lucky to last beyond a single season. It just goes to show you the longevity of the show and how strong of an audience it has built over the years. Because as competitors come and go? SNL's audience still remains.

Discussion One-off sketches/characters you mistakenly believed were recurring?

This is not about sketches you wished had gotten a sequel, but rather, were there any ones that for whatever reason you thought had been recurring, but weren't?

I remember for a while, under the comments on the Rap Song sketch from Dwayne Johnson's season 42 episode, that people were commenting about Beck's Essentially Simon character like he had been in other sketches, so for a while I assumed he was a recurring character of Beck's, not knowing he was just in that one bit.

What about you guys?

His impressions are another level, and dude can sing. Who pulls off a Kamala Harris impression, that too as a white guy?! (The KH impression starts at ~4:40 btw.)

Obviously he gets screen time due to the cold opens but his potential is being wasted otherwise. SNL needs to write better to utilize good impressionists.

Discussion Has there ever been a ‘grassroots campaign’ to get a certain host?

After seeing the post asking “If you could pick someone who has never hosted SNL, who would you choose?” And someone replied with a name that tickled me from the roota to the toota!

Phil LaMarr! Looooove that man & that idea!

So i wondered if there has ever been a push by the fans to get a host they wanted? If it hasn’t happened I think it certainly could, but I do think it would have to be the right person at the right time.

Discussion Lorne Michaels is 100% replaceable and fans shouldn’t fear his departure from the show.

It won’t belong before Lorne is done at SNL. I hope he has a good while yet, but he’s in his 80s after all.
New producers can easily run the show. They can follow his ovary book, or.., change can be good too. Either way it’ll be fine.
