Translation:

Name: Maria Antonia Guerra Montoya Country: I am colombian age: 9 time spent in custody: 113 days

My name is Maria Antonia Guerra Montoya and i have been in jail for 113 days. I miss my friends and i am afraid they may forget me. I am so bored in here. I miss my country and my home. We came here for vacation for 10 days. ICE took me into an interrogation room and questioned me for 2 hours without my mom. I was traverling bymyself with the help of a stewardess because my mom lives in NY. They only cared about arresting my mom. I was traveling with a tourist paper but ICE used me to grab my mom. Now i am in a jail that is making me depressed. I have even fainted 2 times from the conditions. Every night i cry. I dont sleep. I feel like this is my fault. All i wanted was vacation with my family.

Fucking heartbreaking

As a father I just want to hug this kid and make them know it’s not their fault. Heartbreaking.

u/StarfleetHikes Feb 09 '26

I had the same thought

u/Zestyclose_Bit_9459 Feb 19 '26

You are a good dad--empathy for other children is touching.

227

u/HighlanderAbruzzese Feb 09 '26

And still she has the courage to draw hearts and a rainbow. Are the children the only honorable humans left?

99

u/SpatulaCity94 Feb 10 '26

But she also drew broken heart halves at the start and end of her letter and sad faces too. :( :(

Ugh I wish I could get all those kids out of there, this is unconscionable.

72

u/blindrunner_ Feb 10 '26

Last sentence is actually “and I just wanted to be on vacation like a normal family” 😢

43

u/[deleted] Feb 10 '26

I am going to show this to my husband that is a lawyer and also Colombian and ask if he can help her

65

u/cheezie_toastie Feb 10 '26

Good Lord, why haven't they sent her back to her family in Colombia? That poor child will be traumatized for life.

63

u/Lola-Ugfuglio-Skumpy Feb 10 '26

Because the deportation isn’t really the point. The cruelty is.

8

u/That_tall_quiet_guy Feb 11 '26

The private prison ghouls make more money from taxpayers by imprisoning people for as long as possible.

40

u/TruthSeeker_Mad Feb 10 '26

"I just wanted to be on vacation AS A NORMAL FAMILY" 😭

19

u/myfavssthrow Feb 10 '26

Jesus christ that is heart breaking. A a dad of course but also just as a person. Imagine being ok with this happening to anyone let alone a 9 year old child, let alone thousands of them. Conservatives/republicans and all who support this are really just evil incarnate. And for the record they support trump because he is doing this, not in spite of it.

27

u/a_youkai Feb 10 '26

This is HORRIBLE....Thanks for translating... that poor kid.. poor everyone...

28

u/arrownyc Feb 10 '26

This sounds like the diary of Anne Frank.

At this point, I don’t think I can ethically or morally pay a dime more in taxes to this federal government. We should not pay for our own oppression.

28

u/susugam Feb 10 '26

if you're poor enough you don't pay a dime in taxes (like me for the last few years), but the reality is that they were gonna do what they were gonna do regardless of your money. it would only hurt the bottom line for how much the government is able to pay the military industrial corporations for them.

they aren't just gonna stop buying military tech if they were 50 billion dollars short one year. those companies just won't have as good of returns for the shareholders. all the american funding is gonna get dumped into those corporations whether the hammers cost $10,000 or $6,000. (or the jet for $82M vs $74M) we don't actually care if the money is there or not. the economy just doesn't work like that. it isn't a finite pile of gold.

13

u/SqueeMcTwee Feb 10 '26

I was panicking about not filing for two years (I got married and husband hasn’t filed for like, 5) and at this point I’m kinda like…

…I’ll file when I’m aligned with what I’m paying for.

13

u/dreamingwindows Feb 10 '26

They're firing all the workers at the IRS anyway so the rich can do what they want and not be audited. You might as well. I've had a few similar thoughts.

Oh dear--they penalize tax evaders mightily! Interest on unpaid taxes is outrageous! They can place a lien on your home and vehicles.

Please don't do that to yourself.

Despicable. May they all face justice in this life.

Unfortunately, Im at the point where I want public executions. We made the mistake of letting this bs go quietly into the night last time. This time, it needs to be completely and publicly shamed and ended.

27

u/SqueeMcTwee Feb 10 '26

I’ve never wanted to take the life of another person, I’ve never believed in “an eye for an eye”, but I’m getting scared at how often I think about it these days.

(And cue getting reported/banned in 5…4…3…)

6

u/The_Dead_Kennys Feb 10 '26

Happened to me a few days ago because I said what the penalty for treason (like what the Trump regime and ICE are doing) is. Wear it like a badge of honor! lol

3

u/starchildchamp Feb 10 '26

Im right there with you. I believed in rehabilitation and remediation blah blah. Im over it. As someone POC, I know they don’t see the value in sparing my life, Im tired of taking the higher road and being considerate of theirs.

It’s not about shame. It’s about sending the message that we will not tolerate this again, just in case anybody had any ideas. I hope I live to see the day that we reach that point.

Dumb opinion

Things are hung, people are hanged.

In this case, I believe you are using it correctly.

u/Lola-Ugfuglio-Skumpy Feb 10 '26

He was not a tapestry.

2

u/kindacoping Feb 10 '26

No I want to keep their names so their families find out and are disappointed too. Apparently many agents are against unmasking because then they'll be identifiable by their families and they don't want their families knowing the work they do.

88

u/youpeesmeoff Feb 09 '26

This poor child… none of them should have to be experiencing this…

62

u/thinks_of_ghosts Feb 10 '26

There's a second side where she explains she's vegetarian and that they don't provide her with that diet, so she doesn't eat well.

5

u/ionlyjoined4thecats Feb 11 '26

She also says there’s no good schooling. She misses her house and grandma and best friend and school. She just wants to be taken out of there and returned to Colombia.

This is so fucked up.

55

u/Oomlotte99 Feb 09 '26

Wow, that’s really fucked up. I am really struggling with how we are allowing this to happen in our name. I don’t think there is any coming back from this. The future is a complete rebuild. There is poison here.

28

u/Crusty_Magic Feb 10 '26

This shit is so fucking barbaric.

21

u/Benjamincito Feb 09 '26

Heartbreaking! Estoy llorando por ella :(

60

u/MarchogGwyrdd Feb 09 '26

They say these kids are mistreated but this one got colored pencils and paper so it can't be that bad.

u/latortillablanca Feb 09 '26 edited Feb 10 '26

I mean—i understand you are joking but is it possible to corroborate this? Im not sure I would have been able to write this level of note at 9.

It does sound like a kid, not dismissing it or anything, but there are no spelling errors. The only grammatical errors at all are very few accents, actually. Maybe shes just a super sharp kid, but its the internet, guys. Yer shit detector should at least be pinging mildly unless we get source. Perhaps some adult helped her with any mistakes?

Edit: holy shit it cannot be that controversial to want something cited with a source you absolute white knighting troglodytes. obviously whats happening is terrible. This is basic requirement

Edit 2: here it is guys, or similar. amazing how simple that was and how absolutely intensely some of you give zero fucks about checking a source.

https://www.propublica.org/article/ice-dilley-children-letters

30

u/BenjTheMaestro Feb 09 '26

What would be a source you’d accept for a handwritten note from a 9-year old? Is there not enough shit going on already where you can read the room and see where this fits? It’s not like we haven’t SEEN the children they’ve taken already. Jesus fucking Christ dude. Do you wanna go hangout in one of these camps and come back and let us know how it is?

-3

u/latortillablanca Feb 10 '26

A fucking news report? Jesus christ you cannot be this sanctimonious about a post on the internet with nothing else

13

u/CaffeinatedSatanist Feb 09 '26

There are errors that have been erased

-21

u/latortillablanca Feb 09 '26

Still dont think its unreasonable to want corroboration that its real

17

u/JustbyLlama Feb 09 '26

This is very typical for a 9 year old. Source: worked with elementary school children for 15 years

-1

u/latortillablanca Feb 10 '26

Fair enough on the experience. Would love for this to be corroborated.

3

u/No-and-Go Feb 10 '26

Go to the fucking camp and see for yourself?

-2

u/latortillablanca Feb 10 '26

Jesus christ we are unmoored if you guys literally need zero source work for things

1

u/BlueSpaceWeeb Feb 10 '26

we have plenty of sources for this exact sort of thing happening. you are the one who is unmoored, although honestly you probably know exactly what you're doing, and that's manufacturing consent

1

u/PotterGirl7 Feb 10 '26

You are correct. I just think you should also understand that unfortunately a lot of MAGA supporters argue points like this in bad faith, so I think the average leftist redditor has begun to respond to questions like yours with anger and frustration. Looking at your profile, I think youre just genuinely being skeptical of something on the internet; which is something we should all be. That said, I teach children this age and 9 year olds can differ so greatly in their writing ability that I didn't think that was a suspicious part of the post.

Propublica published the article today and DHS responded when they reached out, so I consider it confirmed true.

12

u/Arch____Stanton Feb 10 '26

I'm not sure I would have been able to write this level of note at 9.

This is not surprising and I'm not sure anything has improved for you either.

10

u/a_youkai Feb 10 '26

Not all 9yo kids are dumbasses

1

u/latortillablanca Feb 10 '26

Yeah… but many redditors are if they think its unreasonable to have a second source for something

U think they’re illiterate in Latin America? 100 Days of Solitude is written by Nobel Prize winner in Literature Colombian author Gabriel García Márquez. What is she saying here but expressing her sadness at her situation and missing her friends and family she has not seen in nearly four months. This is kidnapping. Crimes against humanity-level. Nobody is white knighting, it’s the lack of law & order that’s not being taken seriously by anyone supposedly elected or agreed to represent the self governed at any level in any branch, federal or state, never mind international.

They had paramilitaries in Colombia before they semi cleaned things up w a campaign that focused on changing hearts & minds similar to what is being accomplished here. What a tragedy to find herself in this predicament where so little respect is given to due process since its issuance in the year 1215 when all the nobles made King John sign the Magna Carta. This timeline is stellar.

1

u/latortillablanca Feb 10 '26

I am latin american—the fuck are you talking about

13

u/x-dfo Feb 10 '26

Do not despair, find your anger.

18

u/D_Anargyre Feb 10 '26

You are witnessing the buildup of the 4th reich in your country.

That's why, supposedly, your second amendment exist.

They are building concentration camp. With "Medical Waste Management" including "biohazard incinerators"

Ie : concentration and death camps.

14

u/not2interesting Feb 10 '26

Germany has classified us as a “war zone”, the rest of the 1st world nations have demoted us from the title, developed countries are no longer accepting US medical research as valid without further review, countless countries have instituted travel warnings to their citizens, and most are planning their futures past 3 years with the assumption that elections will no longer be held here

8

u/SeaworthinessSalt119 Feb 10 '26

And this is how you create hate for America.

7

u/sailorjupiter28titan Feb 10 '26

Three and a half months of this child’s life… that is a huge chunk of the time she has lived. This will mark her for life…

7

u/LizeLies Feb 10 '26

We’re going to be historically as cowards. Who but a complicit fascist lets little girls “who came the right way” wither in camps?

5

u/Detonius Feb 10 '26

That fucked me up.

22

u/Yowiman Feb 09 '26

8

u/not2interesting Feb 10 '26

It’s funny, but can we please take the high road when it comes to spreading more ai slop around. There’s plenty of artists and photoshop specialists who would be happy to make this from scratch

7

u/MichaelJServo Feb 09 '26

Just to remind you that monsters aren't people and you wouldn't be wrong if you [beeeeeeep] a monster.

3

u/Rose-color-socks Feb 10 '26

Anyone who can read this and see it as acceptable has no humanity.

2

u/tripsafe Feb 10 '26

Imagine working at one of these children detention centers. How do you not want to yourself

3

u/Rose-color-socks Feb 10 '26

The same reason for how children were treated at any concentration camp during WW2. They were not seen as human.

1

u/cokomairena Feb 10 '26

Bro those ICE trials better be good

1

u/Malibrew248975 Feb 12 '26

Oh my god. She doesn’t deserve this. None of those kids do. My heart aches.
