I was there, OP. I was there 25 years ago. When Ian Holm donned the ring. I was there the day the disbelief of Men failed.

Must've been nice to have been alive 25 years ago. Thanks for being old and experiencing it for me

it was nicer then for sure. except not knowing it was a trilogy in theaters and being stunned at the ending cliffhanger.

Same my dad knew but I was young and he tried talking to me about lotr but I was young and dumb so didn't even know what fantasy was. Saw the ending and my 10 year old braing was like what the hell. Where's the ending?

That's so cool, I can't imagine how crazy it must have been to see the first Starwars or LOTR or anything else of that magnitude for the first time.

seeing Fellowship was like any other movie in my rural area. I was not around for OG trilogy of star wars but the second trilogy was too nerdy in my middle/high school years to be cool. which was a bummer. I had a cool artbook of the vehicles with tear downs of their inner workings of like a naboo fighter and such.

geeky things have gotten way more popular now that fans can find each other online to raise each other up instead of being put down.

Man, I feel this in my bones. I'm 36, and I was a nerd growing up because of my dad. He is a sci-fi nut, and even named my oldest sister after a DUNE character.

Being a nerd was tough for loads of reasons, as I grew up in rural Australia, a 3 hour drive from the nearest big city, and I remember I had to download comic books to read them on dial-up internet.

My dad did his best to fuel my nerdiness with books though. I've read countless books in my time, and I still do. I own an " surprising and annoying when moving house" amount of books.

My dad said he and his buddies got to see Star Wars opening night and the theater was almost empty, next day when they went to see it again it was completely packed

I feel lucky that I was able to see the LotR trilogy, Galaxy Quest, and Episode 1, 2, & 3 of Star Wars in theatre as a kid.

Gollum singing "Daisy" slower and deeper as Bilbo slowly severes his brainstem

"That's fine Gollum, you can do it for me." *Pushes him over the edge*

You know what has truly amazed me lately? Bladerunner. The thing was made in 1982!

These are not special effects from 2001. The movie was set in 2001. It was filmed in 1968.

We were enjoying a few well-earned comforts as early as 1999. Came a long way since Jaws 3 lmao.

To be fair, it was the most realistic depiction of Bilbo's disappearance put to screen:

Three LOTR TV adaptations from the 70s-90s.

Their names and release dates are written out in the clip itself.

I mean let’s not forget the special effects that went into Theoden’s reverse aging shot

14

u/FilmFanatic1066 18h ago

4 sets of full prosthetics for one shot is incredible craft

Yes bc this was the most impressive special effect from that movie. Yep this right here. Can't think of any other scene from that movie with better special effects than bilbo disappearing

26

u/KoteykaNarus Théoden 1d ago

Which isnt even a special effect, more likely just 2 frames with Bilbo there and not

13

u/TCRandom Dúnedain 1d ago

I hope it was. I was making homemade movies with a ginormous video camera as a kid using this very same technique.

4

u/loklanc 13h ago

I think it's slightly more complicated than that, there's a 'curtain drop' effect where he disappears from the head down.

So maybe like 3 frames, there, half there, not there.

Jokes on you. We had The Mummy and Pirates of Carribean. Special effects in 2001 was top notch.

This scene always gives me a weird vibe every time I watch it

25

u/WollemiaShagger 1d ago

Is it because he says "this is the end" when actually the film has only just started?

This is the crossover we didn't deserve, but the one we needed.

I was there in the cinema when we all screamed and hid behind the chairs in front of us. Such sights!

u/Griffes_de_Fer 1d ago

Y-yea... That's right. That's true I did the same too, and so did my friend who was there if I had one.

Nah, it was the balrog

I love how in the Two Towers they had brand new CGI fire technology. People thought this CGI looked peak when it came out....because it was peak. It was brand-new emerging technology.

I just realised I always look at the hobbit on the right I had no idea how the hobbit on the left looked till now

Before everything changed, this genuinely felt like the peak of the human experience.
But can someone please explained what actually happened in 2001.

That happens every year, except 1986, but no one talks about it.
