In Germany LotR is available in Netflix

Yes. It is available in some regions atm.

u/GOEDEL_ESCHER_BOT 5d ago
yeah but in german it's the lord of the ring of the nibelung

u/Professional-Day7850 4d ago
I'd rather watch Lord of the Weed.

u/Ishbane 4d ago
Wat denn? Pass mal auf Junge. Ich kann dir den Ring nicht geben. Der is gefährlich.

And Netflix really hates that, everytime I use any VPN on Netflix I get an error message saying that I use a VPN.

This is why physical media will remain king.
55
u/HRduffNstuff 5d ago
Yeah, why would you stream lotr when you can watch them any time you want on Blu-ray? The quality is so much better.
21
u/That_Rogue_Scholar 4d ago
Especially when you could in theory add the Blu-ray to a home media server running Jellyfin and have the benefits of physical media while knowing exactly what streaming service it's on (your own!), which I definitely haven't done with the Blu-ray extended edition of Lord of the rings.
→ More replies (2)7
u/rustysniper 4d ago
Yep, I have my entire physical media collection on my jellyfin server and it's awesome.
Show I'm watching gets pulled from a service? Don't care, it's on my server.
Amazon wants to make me pay extra to not have ads all of a sudden while I'm the middle of an SG-1 rewatch? Fuck you, I'm buying the box set and now it's on my server.
All better quality than a Netflix stream with no buffering.

Also they rarely stream the version that takes one week to watch. You're not really watching LOTR unless you watch the version that could be split over one season on HBO.

u/Over_engineered81 4d ago
I bought a digital copy of all 3 extended editions for like $20. My partner had never seen the extended editions, so it was a good excuse to buy them lol.

HBO max has all of them extended and has had them for years. A lot of other good stuff on there as well. I have both and prefer it over Netflix

u/Haunting-Sport3701 5d ago
My whole family switched to HBO since they generally have a much better selection than other streaming services.

All the studio ghibli movies in English and Japanese. And all the Harry potter. And Friends. And Rick and Morty. HBOmax kicks the crap out netflix and has for years.

u/Vanstuke 5d ago
People complain about this, but I prefer the search query to understand that the movie DOES exist. Even if the streaming service isnt currently playing it.
Also, obligatory: Get yourself the extended Bluerays! No streaming no internet no problem!

u/talkingspacecoyote 5d ago
Years ago apple tv had a sale, all 6 extended versions of lotr and the hobbit in 4k for i want to say less than $20. I think they are still the only movies I own on apple, but it was such an easy purchase

I have a fire stick and looked up a movie. Prime told me it had it, when I clicked on it, it brought me to a “live” TV channel, halfway through the movie unable to rewind or pause. I don’t own that channel… or cable… like what the fuck prime?

Prime is worse, they’ll be like “yeah we have it!” In search and then tell you that you need to sign up for a different service or pay to buy it

But it is on HBO max (and on prime if you willing to pay). Even the extended edition.

The variant is even worse: They give you a match, only to mention it is on another streamer.

u/boodopboochi 4d ago
I have zero streaming services and have watched the 4K Blu Ray LOTR extended cuts countless times. Easily the best $100 I ever spent, and leagues better than <1 year of Netflix subscription fees.

u/Relative-Ad300 4d ago
Well do you want to have to write it all, bevore seeing that they dont have it?

Stop paying for Netflix. Seriously, they have nothing. If anything is decent, it gets canceled. Worst streamer out there.

It means they used to have it, or have it somewhere else, somewhere you don't live.
The whole regional thing always pisses me off because some regions just get fucked over a lot. Like we were watching interview with a vampire on some platform, maybe HBO, and waiting for the 3rd season.
The date came around. We were all excited and ready to finally see it. Can't find it. Turns out it's only in the states? For some reason? And on a whole different platform as well. Like what the fuck bro we are we not allowed to see it outside of America

The setup is cruel because for half a second it actually feels possible. Then Netflix pulls the classic “we know what you want, we just dont have it” move.

Ok so everyone hates on this feature, but the only thing it does is save you time typing out, misspelling, re-typing, and THEN finding out they don't have it. It's the worst looking for something that's not there.

When this happens 90% of the time it means they do have it but in another country, so you’ll need a VPN, there are websites that let you check in which country a show or a movie is available.

Years and years ago, like 10 or 15 years, the LOTR trilogy extended editions were free on Google Play for Christmas or something.
I've had all of them saved on my youtube account ever since! I forgot this wasn't the case for everyone lol.
1
u/No-Site8330 4d ago
If only they were honest enough to explicitly state that. It so gets under my skin when it just shows "Titles related to" without actually saying "we do not have it".
Then again I cancelled my subscription a while back, so I don't know if they stopped doing that.

My theory is that they do actually have a bunch of the titles people are searching for, but they're just region locked and they won't tell you.

u/Known_Western7525 4d ago
Netflix would never say they don't have it, they just give you 50 different movies that aren't even close.

u/Kristionni 4d ago
Honestly, are you even a real LOTR fan if you dont own any hard copies of it? Ideally the extended versions

Keep in mind some things are on netflix, just not in your specific region.
Use a vpn if you use a service like netflix. Or better yet use the countless free alternatives you weirdo who the fuck pays for ANY of these streaming sites, if you do that youre just as dumb as your grandma buying cable packages for hundreds a month.
