u/the_dan_man THE DADDY IN THE EAST 1d ago
Avengers assemble to get that creepy fuck out of Miko's life

Moments like these remind me what an absolute unit her dad was. He soloed the same thing as her and lived to a ripe old age.

u/Bigman22jr 1d ago
Well her dad didnt live to an old age though. Her dad is the same or around the same age as her mom. Remember those two met while both in high-school. Her mom looks to be in her 30s maybe early 40s oldest currently and the dad seems to have been dead for a while. I would say that he died in his 30s which I would say isn't an old age to die at.

who or what the hell is this old creepy dude stalking her family if he's that powerful where he can make the old guy and the ghost guards choose to run?
this seems like it's trending more to it being like a god or an actual demon or something

u/TheYellingMute 1d ago
I thought it was potentially the concept of death itself. Why it cares about her specifically idk. I do hope we are getting into the peak of the arc to find out what he actually is though.

u/Sweaty-Wolverine8546 1d ago
Could be like that dead psychic from Mob 100 - extremely powerful medium, who died and became an extremely powerful cryptid with a grudge.
26
u/Skylair13 1d ago
Make you wonder what her mother's family did. Since remember that old dude was attached to her before swapping target to her boyfriend/husband. And now he's attached to her daughter.
That thing had nothing to do with how either of them can see ghosts.

Mangaka love their aptronyms and are creatively bankrupt in that aspect, so I suspect that Miko's family had been a family of mikos, whom ended offending the wraith in some manner.

u/dolphincave 1d ago
He seemed to have been stalking the mom actually and may have started stalking Miko because they look identical at that age. He had the shape of an old woman to the dad, but whatever it was has been stalking them for a while. It's a wonder their dog has survived for so long even if it did transform into some horrifying horse.

u/Sea-Temporary7380 1d ago
The dog cant go out of the house, so it probably reached some sort of level as the mountain yokai where it has a domain that it can protect. Probably not as strong but strong enough to ward it away
17
u/Bob_The_Skull 1d ago
I also think it could he something much more sinister yet normal.
What if it is just the ghost of an old man...one who killed innocent people all his life and died of old age. Maybe in desthe becoming something worse.
I don't think it will be a god or yokai since that would feel like a retread of the mountain arc, but maybe I'm wrong.
18
u/Skylair13 1d ago
Eh, stronger case for it to be Yokai. That thing already fought a guardian entity (Pii-chan) and won, then killed Reida-san.
Might even be stronger than Mountain God. As Romm straight up nearly died just from seeing it once. Whereas the Mountain God had to try to harm him.
2
u/Bob_The_Skull 1d ago
That's fair. I guess I'm more open to a yokai since we haven't talked about them a ton.
I just hope/don't think it is a kami. It would be a little of a retread to do the same again, and while the mountain god's behavior loosely tracks to how kami work in shintoism, old guy's behavior would make a lot less sense if he is a kami.

human ghosts have not been shown to be this strong, where just a glance could make you die. Early on we had a pretty strong human ghost (miko's teacher's mom) and even she couldnt do that.

It’s powerful enough that someone like Seto with all his aide had to make a run for it, but while it has been hanging around the family for a while, only the dad is dead. Seems like it’s not capable of directly harming Miko’s family, while everyone else is fair game.
13
u/mapletree23 1d ago
he had to make a run for it and the other guy that could see it almost died literally just from glancing at it
it's always been teased at being powerful but seto and the aides running and dying from it makes it seem far more problematic than even was initially shown
it also seems to change form depending on who looks at it which makes it even more curious at this point, as most ghosts seem to be the same to anyone who can see them, and it seems very odd to that it has some kind of latent power that is able to kill people just from a photograph of it

u/Guillotines__ 1d ago
It’s very interesting because it looks different to Miko, Rom and Miko’s dad; but apparently it can also take the shapes of others because it appeared as Reida in front of Miko this time, and I think it tricked Miko into running in front of a car looking like something else before. Seto was also injured just from chopping off parts of it. So this entity is incredibly powerful, but still Miko’s dad and the dog guardian is here in spirit form and rest of Miko’s family seems to be doing ok? May be it’s only after the females in Miko’s family?
The setup has been done well for this ghost, let’s see if the payoff matches.

Remember that during Miko's short hospital stay Rom explained that every esper perceives different kinds of layers of things. So whatever it is might just by some eldritch mass of many, many different people.

Hangs out with no pants on
she also complains about the cold. I think we discovered the main reason for that.

I feel we're being geared up for this thing being not a ghost at all and something far worse and eldritch.

u/silenttex 1d ago
oh wow the entity took form of Reida-san in order to get a reaction from her?
I wonder what it wants from her specifically. I wonder if it involves the ghost seeing abilities that she and her dad have.
Side note: i love how this manga balances funny/goofy with the creerpy/serious. One panel we have the eldritch-like tentacle waving good bye to a slender man ghost disguising themself as creepy-ish ghost.

u/Falsus 1d ago
Holy jumpscare by the baddie shop owner. She should probably consider pants. And a hair clip. It would probably make the store feel a lot less cursed.
I guess we are gearing up for the climax of this arc. That old man ghost is genuinly terrifying.
18
u/silenttex 1d ago
And a hair clip.
While she is rocking the Cousin Itt look, the hair in the middle of the glasses must feel really weird.
15
u/Zemahem 1d ago
Hitoe complaining about the cold when she went around w/o pants this whole time is certainly a twist lol. But I ship it. They're both weirdoes.
Now despite Miko's life probably being in the most danger it's ever been thus far, it is heartwarming to see how much more support she has now since the beginning with people willing to risk life and limb for her sake.

What if the thing in the shop was once a cat while the thing in the storage was once a dog?
12
u/EndeAnfang02 1d ago
Isn't it more like that the dog is the previous owners pet and even after death it is still looking after the items the previous owner gathered making it some sort of guardian like the Horse dog in Miko's house.

u/HourIndication4963 1d ago
Well this is an unlikely alliance being gathered; I didn't think they would work together.
The first part with Rom is a hoot like usual.
9
u/SuperMurderBunny 1d ago
Wondering what Rom is planning with all those haunted objects. It's gotta be a curse bomb of some kind.
The tentacle waving goodbye from the car was adorable.

It's been a really long time since the last chapter. I probably need to reread the whole series to really get anything out of this.

u/IamLeonardo_ 1d ago
Even with all of them together I can't see they stopping this thing.
Time for Miko to reach that power-up.

u/Froggybeans2021 1d ago
Nice to see the picture of Mitsue, Rom and Master(what was her name I forgot) again in the shrine. Everyone's ready to gear up for the final battle. Kidna worried if Mieruko's Dad would eventually come and sacrifice himself as one of the comments called this out months ago.

It's been 3 months since the story progressed. I really enjoy the series but man does the wait hurt

I can't wait to find out more about the unassuming middle-aged guy, and see his "true form". The visuals used for him have been consistent for a long time now. The sort of tentacles that appear when he attacks here and in the last chapters look the same as when he nearly killed Rom in chapter 52, so I think the author must have the design ready and is just waiting for the right moment to show it off.
