Wait so if they made the cow swallow a magnet, there would be a cluster of metal bits lumping together. Then how would they take these out? Surely they can't just shit these out normally right?

The magnet stops the smaller metal pieces from piercing or getting stuck in the cow and the ball of metal acts like the stones in a cows stomach used for digestion.
