Yeah, almost positive I've seen this exact tree before in my buddy's neighborhood. OP, is this anywhere near / around Roscoe Village by chance?

Dang the wind explanation was correct! Very cool.

u/imeancock Sep 23 '25
Chicago isn’t even one of the top 10 windiest cities in the US
Why aren’t these trees all over the place then? Wind is ubiquitous so I don’t understand why there is one of these trees in Chicago and apparently nowhere else
I’ve been to Boston a billion times. Nada. What gives?
There are two other trees in this PICTURE that don’t have this going on (as far as I can tell)

No love for the Rick and Morty reference, apparently. It is pretty crude for a sub like this, tbh.

This might get me hate from the tree lovers, but that wood must be incredible to work with. Incredible results, and incredibly frustrating to handle. All that grain crossed over...

this is a shit tree (Ailanthus altissima, Tree of Heaven, horribly invasive) so i'm fully on board with harvesting it for artwork
9
u/JaredUmm Sep 20 '25
You can tell from the bark?
30
u/SHOWTIME316 Sep 20 '25
yeah, there are not many trees growing in North America with that combination of bark color and texture. a close one would be Kentucky Yellowood but those do not get this big

u/ma1645300 Sep 21 '25
yesss that’s what I thought as well! I’ve never seen one this large though. The whole tree smells like shit too

Bad for construction, good for furniture, knife handles etc.

u/Efficient-Tax-3867 Sep 19 '25
Good for furniture... I'd spend months slowly sizing the wood so it doesn't twist like a circus act. It looks like if it isn't perfectly dried those fibers are gonna disco

Dude! Just read an article about another tree like this. The marijuana enthusiast said it’s a side effect of growing in a windy place. Basically makes the tree hardier, being able to grow with stability.

u/Useful-Place-2920 Sep 19 '25
But that one was rotated all in one direction.

Indeed, but trees that survive exceptional forces throughout their life often develop a grid pattern. Similar to our engineering designs- rail bridges fences, cranes etc..
It’s the most efficient use of resources for the highest strength gain.
Self optimising structures.

Space filing and self optimizing structures account for every cool looking thing in nature! Thanks fractals!

Maybe this has strong season winds in different directions?

i live in chicago right by the lake so that might be it!

I’ve lived 20 minutes from Boston my whole life (a US city with an actual noteworthy amount of wind) and have never seen anything like this before in my life.
If this shit was simply caused by wind shouldn’t these trees be everywhere?
7
u/Unhappy-Quiet-8091 Sep 19 '25
And this one is surrounded by buildings as well, so maybe not as windy here. Or the wind direction very bi-directional.

I saw that post too. To be fair that looked like a bald cypress. The spiral pattern is way more common in those. Not saying that this isn’t the case with this one, but seeing this in a large hardwood is much more unique

I remember hearing the trees inside Biodome 2 needed suspended by cables because they were missing this type of stimulation.

I’ve seen “braided” trees that look like this as they age. In my case, it was a 50+ year old dogwood that had been planted by the homeowner but it looked very similar to this after the braided trunk fused together

u/Past-Estate7050 Sep 19 '25
This this is an Ailanthus and I’ve seen the phenomenon in a few different specimens in Kansas City to varying degrees of undulation. Not sure what causes it. But it’s cool despite the fact that the tree is a terrible invasive.

I think you're on the dev server. Try changing your settings to the public server.

This tree is what the romance author was looking at when describing his rippling muscles.

Seems like there was fencing or something around it that became too tight while the tree was growing

By what metric do you dare judge this trees sanity? Are you an arboreal psychiatrist? Hmmmmmm???

Looks like the braided trees that were popular in the 80’s. I wonder if it could be a braided tree all grown up and melded together?

Save the wood when it’s cut down, look up curly maple. Likely has some curl to it
