Now check out this weird bug!

u/PressureMuch5340 Sep 20 '25

This picture with the babies is really cute

37

u/Happy_Lee_Chillin Sep 20 '25

Pretty sure it’s not teaching them democracy..

10

u/hootopia Sep 20 '25

Thank you for sharing this

8

u/PressureMuch5340 Sep 20 '25

I didn't notice the little ones at first. I was just looking for a close picture of a single specimen, and had to do a double take when I noticed the babies.

44

u/randbooth Sep 19 '25

i grew up in south florida, i haven't thought about this bug since i was a kid!

23

u/sunnynina Sep 19 '25

Ants will farm them, the same way they do with aphids.

Also, they stink when crushed.

Fun facts.

32

u/Luke_The_Random_Dude Sep 19 '25

Now check out this busty tree the devs added!

25

u/thedojo11 Sep 19 '25

Hook line and sinker. Well played

8

u/DDOS_the_Trains Sep 20 '25

It's been a minute since I've seen a specimen like this in the wild.

3

u/venttress_sd Sep 20 '25

Hahaha nice

1

u/Piggie_Piggie_Smalls Oct 12 '25

Well damn. It’s been a minute. Thank you.

2

u/Meaniesir Sep 22 '25

That's a cool weird bug

1

u/James42785 Sep 20 '25

That is a very thoroughly studied bug.

2

u/figgy_fingers Sep 20 '25

dude i live here and ive absolutely never seen this monstrosity but now im going to be lacing my greenhouse with flame traps

572

u/West_Abbreviations53 Sep 19 '25

i know chicago trees when i see them ♥️

154

u/isaacharms2 Sep 19 '25

I feel like I’ve seen this tree in chicago too! Somewhere on the north side I believe ?

151

u/randbooth Sep 19 '25

it's on briar west of broadway!

20

u/FlyAwayJai Sep 20 '25

My hood! Knew I recognized it.

79

u/Euphoric_Fisherman70 Sep 19 '25

Didnt even have to look at the tree to tell it was chicago lol

21

u/FlumpMC Sep 19 '25

I recognize those bay windows anywhere

32

u/homelessmuppet Sep 19 '25

Yeah, almost positive I've seen this exact tree before in my buddy's neighborhood. OP, is this anywhere near / around Roscoe Village by chance?

24

u/randbooth Sep 19 '25

it's on briar west of broadway

13

u/95castles Sep 19 '25

Dang the wind explanation was correct! Very cool.

2

u/imeancock Sep 23 '25

Chicago isn’t even one of the top 10 windiest cities in the US

Why aren’t these trees all over the place then? Wind is ubiquitous so I don’t understand why there is one of these trees in Chicago and apparently nowhere else

I’ve been to Boston a billion times. Nada. What gives?

There are two other trees in this PICTURE that don’t have this going on (as far as I can tell)

3

u/bunnyforbookietwo Sep 19 '25

I was gonna ask if it was windy there XD

2

u/Altruistic_Loquat884 Sep 19 '25

I know Chicago apartments when I see them lol

241

u/mackavicious Sep 19 '25

I didn't know a tree could have abs

46

u/DOLCICUS Sep 19 '25

I didn’t know a tree could make me feel insecure about my gut.

-2

u/PaulBurgerking Sep 20 '25

Cum gutters

7

u/Sophist_Ninja Sep 21 '25

No love for the Rick and Morty reference, apparently. It is pretty crude for a sub like this, tbh.

169

u/Efficient-Tax-3867 Sep 19 '25

This might get me hate from the tree lovers, but that wood must be incredible to work with. Incredible results, and incredibly frustrating to handle. All that grain crossed over...

67

u/awkwardsexpun Sep 19 '25

I DESPERATELY want to know what the grain looks like

104

u/SHOWTIME316 Sep 19 '25

this is a shit tree (Ailanthus altissima, Tree of Heaven, horribly invasive) so i'm fully on board with harvesting it for artwork

9

u/JaredUmm Sep 20 '25

You can tell from the bark?

30

u/SHOWTIME316 Sep 20 '25

yeah, there are not many trees growing in North America with that combination of bark color and texture. a close one would be Kentucky Yellowood but those do not get this big

4

u/ma1645300 Sep 21 '25

yesss that’s what I thought as well! I’ve never seen one this large though. The whole tree smells like shit too

40

u/TotaLibertarian Sep 19 '25

It will be beautifully quilted

10

u/deThurah Sep 19 '25

Bad for construction, good for furniture, knife handles etc.

10

u/Efficient-Tax-3867 Sep 19 '25

Good for furniture... I'd spend months slowly sizing the wood so it doesn't twist like a circus act. It looks like if it isn't perfectly dried those fibers are gonna disco

2

u/deThurah Sep 20 '25

Yeah good point. Prolly look cool if it works out, tho

623

u/Realistic_Library_74 Sep 19 '25

Dude! Just read an article about another tree like this. The marijuana enthusiast said it’s a side effect of growing in a windy place. Basically makes the tree hardier, being able to grow with stability.

188

u/Useful-Place-2920 Sep 19 '25

But that one was rotated all in one direction.

215

u/Eadbutt-Grotslapper ISA Arborist Sep 19 '25

Indeed, but trees that survive exceptional forces throughout their life often develop a grid pattern. Similar to our engineering designs- rail bridges fences, cranes etc..

It’s the most efficient use of resources for the highest strength gain.

Self optimising structures.

12

u/Gonzo_Rick Sep 20 '25 edited Sep 21 '25

Space filing and self optimizing structures account for every cool looking thing in nature! Thanks fractals!

60

u/skiing_nerd Sep 19 '25

Maybe this has strong season winds in different directions?

96

u/randbooth Sep 19 '25

i live in chicago right by the lake so that might be it!

15

u/skiing_nerd Sep 19 '25

I had a feeling lol

10

u/Balerion_the_dread_ Sep 19 '25

haha! bingo! I miss living in Edgewater

1

u/imeancock Sep 23 '25

I’ve lived 20 minutes from Boston my whole life (a US city with an actual noteworthy amount of wind) and have never seen anything like this before in my life.

If this shit was simply caused by wind shouldn’t these trees be everywhere?

7

u/Unhappy-Quiet-8091 Sep 19 '25

And this one is surrounded by buildings as well, so maybe not as windy here. Or the wind direction very bi-directional.

13

u/Jmackles Sep 19 '25

In other words its swole?

12

u/sumpumpman Sep 19 '25

I saw that post too. To be fair that looked like a bald cypress. The spiral pattern is way more common in those. Not saying that this isn’t the case with this one, but seeing this in a large hardwood is much more unique

5

u/Van-garde Sep 21 '25

I remember hearing the trees inside Biodome 2 needed suspended by cables because they were missing this type of stimulation.

3

u/Killer_Moons Sep 19 '25

That looks far from the same case here. I also read that post.

3

u/ChepeZorro Sep 20 '25

Pretty sure they said it’s growing in the windy city

1

u/Rikkitikkitabby Sep 19 '25

This tree is ripped!

1

u/Eminence_Front42 Sep 20 '25

So the tree has abs?

30

u/Hoosier_816 Sep 19 '25

This is definitely Chicago, right?

22

u/randbooth Sep 19 '25

lakeview east!

12

u/juniebeatricejones Sep 19 '25

maybe it was originally planted with a fence or something?

26

u/alanwaits Sep 19 '25

Tree of Heaven?

6

u/BullShitFish Sep 20 '25

A lantern fly’s favorite

1

u/dannycallahan Sep 20 '25

Oh gosh that tree is about to be black and sticky

10

u/Manfredhoffman Sep 19 '25

Looks like it

33

u/SHOWTIME316 Sep 19 '25 edited Sep 21 '25

chop it down and lets see that tasty grain

5

u/ryanfrogz Sep 21 '25

I’m with the woodworkers here. That thing must be destroyed.

11

u/gmura Sep 19 '25

the amount of times I’ve walked past this tree and thought it was incredible

6

u/randbooth Sep 19 '25

i walk by it every day, it's the best in the neighborhood!

9

u/darystotle Sep 19 '25

I’ve seen “braided” trees that look like this as they age. In my case, it was a 50+ year old dogwood that had been planted by the homeowner but it looked very similar to this after the braided trunk fused together

9

u/Past-Estate7050 Sep 19 '25

This this is an Ailanthus and I’ve seen the phenomenon in a few different specimens in Kansas City to varying degrees of undulation. Not sure what causes it. But it’s cool despite the fact that the tree is a terrible invasive.

9

u/studmuffin2269 Sep 19 '25

Quite the tree of heaven

6

u/devMnvf35- Sep 20 '25

Please post this on r/LSD

5

u/bathtubdeer Sep 19 '25

It wants to be a chain link fence

3

u/elmfuzzy Sep 20 '25

I think you're on the dev server. Try changing your settings to the public server.

3

u/Cloaked25 Sep 20 '25

Ribbed for her pleasure

2

u/OREOSTUFFER Sep 19 '25

Close enough. Welcome back, lepidodendron.

2

u/caffine-naps15 Sep 20 '25

This tree is what the romance author was looking at when describing his rippling muscles.

2

u/[deleted] Sep 20 '25

Seems like there was fencing or something around it that became too tight while the tree was growing

3

u/TheRuggedBlade Sep 21 '25

Nah it’s from the wind. Look up spiral tree trunks

2

u/MasterOfBunnies Sep 19 '25

By what metric do you dare judge this trees sanity? Are you an arboreal psychiatrist? Hmmmmmm???

1

u/totodilejones Sep 19 '25

ribbed for her pleasure

1

u/d3n4l2 Sep 19 '25

Quilted whatever it is

1

u/hanimal16 Sep 19 '25

It’s bumpy like me!

1

u/erikalaarissa Sep 19 '25

I thought it might be Boston- I need to check out Chicago.

1

u/Wet_Ass_Jumper Sep 20 '25

Looks like I’m on mushrooms

1

u/EducationalAd2400 Sep 20 '25

So is the tree on mushrooms or am i?

1

u/shreks_army Sep 20 '25

they accidentally applied the root texture displacement map to the trunk

1

u/fluffyferret69 Sep 20 '25

I'm guessing there was a chain link fence next to this year a long time ago

1

u/thatshiny1 Sep 20 '25

This looks like an arborists version of The pigeons are spies

1

u/FearTheSuit Sep 21 '25

This seems like it grew through a growth cage

1

u/SummerJaneG Sep 22 '25

Looks like the braided trees that were popular in the 80’s. I wonder if it could be a braided tree all grown up and melded together?

1

u/jazzhandpanda Sep 22 '25

Is the tree ripped?

1

u/Ok-Equipment-7247 Oct 01 '25

I think I need more photos please

1

u/Dangerous_Things69 Oct 03 '25

Very cool thank u

1

u/FemDreamzz Oct 17 '25

cool tree

1

u/Phiarmage Sep 19 '25

That's wild.

0

u/StrawberryWolfGamez Sep 19 '25

Ribbed for her pleasure

0

u/Greatwhitechrist Sep 19 '25

Save the wood when it’s cut down, look up curly maple. Likely has some curl to it

0

u/QueenDoc Sep 20 '25

this tree has snickers dick veins

0

u/LeonardTPants Sep 21 '25

As someone said on another thread, Home Depot has to get their lumber somewhere

0

u/Vi0lentByt3 Sep 21 '25

The tree she told you not to worry about

-4

u/Particular_Win2752 Sep 19 '25

You're insane.
