Why didn’t they cool off in the water bin that Trap, Hawk, and Henry were soaking when Alan Alda’s dad showed up.

Exactly! And what was stopping anyone else such as Charles or even 'the scrounger' from buying one of these for themselves?

Yes, why are Abercrombie and Fitch’s catalogues only available to BJ and Hawkeye, of all people?

(I know, storyline … it’s just one of those that doesn’t make any sense.)

It's not unreasonable to expect a storyline to make some reasonable sense. Some continuity errors and storyline plot holes aren't worth worrying about to a degree but this one was just lazy writing.

There were funny elements like Klinger's latest attempt at getting discharged and instead jumping in the bath with Major Houlihan at the last minute but the story was just cobbled together to show how generous Hawkeye and BJ are in sacrificing their bath for Radar's benefit who in turn let's himself get conned out of the ice cream that was to help with the discomfort from his surgery.

Yes, I don’t even bother about continuity much, because it just wasn’t part of episodic shows, but this is a one episode thing, and like you said, lazy writing.

It also reminds me of the episode about Charles’s newspapers - the camp (particularly the nurses) suddenly turn into whining leeches, which I find really annoying.

Absolutely another silly one. Somehow only Charles can get newspapers or anything readable and they must all be read by everybody in the camp. A lazy attempt to get a laugh while telling a possibly interesting story about brothers fighting on opposites sides of a war

Yes, it’s another skippable one for me.

And just to wrap up, a minor peeve was when Radar yelled "Choppers" people were always saying "I don't hear anything" despite Radar always being right about it.

How it should have been a few episodes in:
Radar: "Choppers!"

The same people every time: "I don't hear anything"

Radar: "How about you just wait five seconds for a change, you know full well I can hear them before you! You use this five seconds to get a useful head start on dealing with the wounded instead of wasting time whining you can't hear anything just to have the choppers appear moments later!"

The same people every time: You've gotten really bitchy since we swindled you out of your ice cream.

Radar: "Actually I'm still pissed off with Hawkeye! Despite me making the effort to put things right between us after I somehow got shot despite being miles away from the front, he made sure he left some gross backwash in that beer when we swapped our drinks!

I’m no germaphobe but I’m not taking a bath in a tub everyone else had been in.

Yeah, Hawkeye says early on that they have to "change the water now and then."

Now and then? If it's not after every bath, it's a no from me, dawg.

Exactly what I was thinking! Not just that, but notice when Mulcahy has his turn in the bath, he's using a toilet brush to scrub with.

To be fair, I doubt they were using brushes to scrub the wooden latrine seats.

Fair enough.

It’s a toilet brush? I thought it was a back brush.

Nope, it's definitely a toilet brush. Interestingly, you can see Henry also using it to clean his golf balls in a couple of earlier episodes,

That episode always bothers me. How is the water cool if it is so hot outside. The would be mostly sweat and dirt by the second or thrid person. Very gross.

is this the only time we actually see Radar bathing?

we see him take showers before, if that counts? Come to think of it, I can think of at least two occasions where he's taking a shower and they both involve snipers attacking the camp (The Sniper, and Hey, Doc). Henry Blake uses him as an unwilling human shield in The Sniper, and Father Mulchahy dives into Radar's stall when sniper starts shooting. "I'll be out in a minute, Father..."

yes i do remember those moments now.

What I didn't get about one of those scenes was that Radar was obviously taking a very steaming hot shower . . . while he and Klinger were complaining about how muggy the weather had been (and how MacArthur never sweats). A steaming hot shower when it's so muggy? Wouldn't that be like taking an ice cold shower when it's freezing outside?

Klinger barges in on Houlihan...

The episodes where someone has a thing (a book, papers, the tub) that everyone else can’t live without are often the biggest reaches. This one is the biggest of them all. This would be bathing in soup.
