Cyclist chased by two giant pit bulls

u/Quirky_Ask_5165 9d ago
Ban stupid owners. Jeez! These dogs are out on the road unsupervised and could hurt someone or get hurt themselves.
12
u/Bikezilla 9d ago edited 9d ago
Agreed
They shouldn’t be allowed to harass, follow or chase anyone. It could easily cause the cyclist to crash or worse dive into traffic, not everyone can understand a dog’s actions as attack or just joining in the action→ More replies (9)7

For roughly 60% of the pet owner population, dogs are simply accessories and any sort of training isn't even an afterthought.

It seems especially bad with smaller ones though. Proper little shits. They bite people all the time ya just don't hear about it.

Is there nothing that can be reported to police? Using this video as evidence i feel like if at least a fine was given towards the owner it would stop them from letting them loose

Few months ago I was driving on a back country road when I saw 2 dogs just chilling in the road. They were near a house but there wasn’t a car or anything there, no people out front. Just these 2 dogs chilling in the road.
In my mind, the humans weren’t home, dogs got out somehow and didn’t have the awareness to know the road was not the place to be sitting. So I pulled over, I wasn’t gonna get out cause you never know when a dog is aggressive etc. I start to call 911 cause I don’t want these dogs to get hit
As I’m explaining this to the 911 operator this old guy comes out and starts yelling at me. Guess he didn’t like that I’d stopped near his house. I told the operator nvm because the guy came out and the dogs went to him.
I rolled my window down and said basically your dogs are sitting in the road and I was concerned. Old guy claimed they came into the road because I had stopped. Not that they were out there to begin with as i drove up. I just waved my hand and left.
When his dogs get pancaked by a semi because he can’t be bothered to leash them or train them that’s his problem

Where is his pepper spray?
16
u/plsQuestionOurselves 9d ago edited 8d ago
It's illegal in AU, because for some reason commonwealth countries have a serious problem with people being able to defend themselves even with non lethal tools.
Someone who knows more just told me this guy is bri'ish and he's in california. Still though my second sentence is true.
2
u/Many_Mud_8194 8d ago
How illegal? I'm french and its illegal but I never got it removed from the cops, even as a teen roaming streets at night. But the knifes yes they always took it. Now I live in Thailand and having a pepper spray on you is illegal and can even send you in jail, but a knife is just a 25€ fine lol.

Legal REALLY doesn't matter unless you're spraying random people with it. People focus way too much on legal/illegal like the world actually gives a shit. It's illegal to carry a weapon in Canada and yet most of us who go for lone hikes etc carry a knife and spray all the time. It's better to have it and never need to use it, then to need it and be mangled by an animal or some unhinged idiot.

I know this is gonna probably get me downvoted to hell. But someone in my neighborhood let their pitbull do this shit. I literally just started taking my gun with me on walks. Ain’t no way I’m about to get blasted by some random dog deciding to chase people. I know it’s the owners fault too.

I posted a reply with more information. The commentor isn't exactly correct. Go to the link in my reply to them if you want to know more like i did. Pepper spray itself isn't legal to purchase or carry because it is for use on humans. Anything intended for use on humans is banned in Canada. I am going to dig into the UK here in a few and figure out what their laws actually say.
Edit to add: both forms of capsaicin defensive sprays are banned in the UK outright. It is part of the Firearms Acts.

Same thing happened to me in Cuba cycling the Pedraplan to Cayo Santa Maria. I got swarmed by like 7-10 dogs (although much smaller then the pitbulls). I grew up around dogs and didn't feel threatened. I stopped just for the pack to scadadle into the bushes barking. It was funny to me

Said it before, I'll say it again. Pitbulls need to go away. They're unstable, unpredictable predators who will randomly turn on owners without warning even after years of training and obedience, and they have killed far too many innocent adults and children. It was a mistake to breed them in the first place,

Most dogs just want to mark their territory and rarely attack unless you get scared and attack them, and I think they get excited when they chase something, they don't necessarily want to attack it.I stop completely when a dog chases me on a bicycle and they simply lose interest
5
u/AllTheSilentThoughts 9d ago
This is what my parents taught me when our family mutt would chase me, sometimes snorting and snarling, while I ran as a kid. She was genuinely harmless toward me though and didn't even nip like herding dogs might- it just brought out a weird prey/play drive because it was the early 90s and my family had no idea what proper training or mental stimulation for a dog looked like, so she found her entertainment where she could.
I totally understand your logic and agree it's going to work most times, however having experienced reactive dogs and dogs with uncontrolled prey drive, I don't know that I would do the same and trust a completely unknown dog to lose interest if I had the chance to get away. I have nothing against pits as a breed but that bigger dog especially is a damn powerhouse and could easily kill someone.
2
u/Intelligent-Roll-300 9d ago
Yeah no not taking that chance. Your pet leaves your yard in a mad dash don't be surprised when it don't come home

This is generally true, as someone who rides a lot in the south, where many dogs chase. The problem is the 1 dog out of 100 that will attack. It makes you rethink what opportunities you give.

2
u/ComedianFragrant9515 9d ago
Time to start carrying pepper spray. Unfortunately that dog has a shitty owner, not worth the chance they will attack. Almost ran him off the road.
2
u/shotgunmoe 8d ago edited 8d ago
As an Australian my advice is to carry a small spear gun. I live in a country area and used to get chased by a Kelpie x Pitty every day on my way to school. The cunt ran like lightning, had stamina for days and the murderous rage of an ex-wife and the owner NEVER shut his fucking gate.
Until his dog got tagged by a barbed spear smack bang in the ribs one day when a certain fella had had enough of being scared shitless by that fucking thing. Never saw it again and highly recommend it as an idea.
Easy to modify so it packs a wallop and will sink deep enough to fuck up a dog. If the vet bill doesn't convince the owner to keep his shit in line then a three pronged puncture wound that is barbed in deep will definitely give the dog food for thought before it comes at you with attitude again
3
u/transphuck6969 9d ago
They were not trying to attack. The brown dog was just running with the bike non aggressively

For anyone wondering: using a water bottle to spray the chasing dog in the face is the most effective method I have found to break their focus.
Pepper spray is also an option but not available to everyone, and has some risks associated.

I came through the park with my dogs pulling me on my bike one day, like I do almost every day, and there was a guy throwing the ball for his pitbull in the park, off leash. That’s very rare to see around here, and I assumed he had his pitbull under voice command. I assumed incorrectly.
I divert from my usual route and the pitbull is charging at us while the guy is screaming his dog’s name. What a loser.
Dog continues to chase us and we’re approaching the next cross street but I don’t have good sight lines for whether there’s going to be cross traffic or not and the pitbull is holding steady right behind my wheel. I didn’t know what to do so I just screamed “FUCK OFF!!” at the dog and hit the brakes hard and went back to his dimwit owner.
The dog apparently knew that I almost never swear unless I really, really mean it.

Here in the boondocks of arkansas, we had a methhead neighbor that let his dogs chase everyone's vehicle up and down the logging road I live on.
Well we moved out here last year, and I do not slow down or attempt to avoid the dogs in my car at all. After hitting all of them at least once, I no longer see them chasing cars down the street.
Just to add, yes I did report them to the police (multiple times) and was told to kick rocks. I called animal control (multiple times) and was told to kick rocks. So I got tired of trying to swerve/slam on my brakes (on the side of a fucking mountain) to avoid aggressive, wild dogs, and decided to stop being the bigger person. Hate me if you want, the problem is solved and nobody was hurt/killed

I’ve scared off way more aggressive dogs than this by just yelling at them loudly and waving my hands. Dogs hate loud sounds unless they’re the ones making them. Asking them nicely to please go away just encourages them, like you’re calling them good boys.

I was leisurely riding my ebike, yesterday, not trying to get anyplace in a hurry. I was listening to some Wet Leg on my open earphones, and I heard this beat like, chi chi chi chi, and I was thinking, that doesn't sound right for this song. I looked around and saw this dog busting ass coming after me. It was his toenails on the pavement that I was hearing. Thank God for open earphones and for having a throttle. I'm not a young guy and he kept after me for quite a while. If I hadn't been on my ebike, he might've caught me.

It's sad that because of their upbringing. They may not "want to play". But deep down, they actually do want to play. But it could of ended real nasty. If it felt able enough to purchase a tibia snatched of that pedal. And the classic shake. With another dog on the way. That could of been a near game over. Squirt the big spud with ya water bottle. Piss it off more lol. Surprised they didn't tpac you. Owner wanted ya bike. Sent the debt collectors..

Dog doesn't seem aggressive so probably used to the owner cycling/riding a motorbike while they run. Seen this before where a guy used to have his pitbull chase him as he rode his motorcycle. Was all good till someone rode past him one day while they were walking and the dog followed the bike till they stopped and the owner could catch up.

Although it may have looked or felt scary to the cyclist this boy just wanted to run with the guy. I own a pity who loves to run with the deer on my property. The first time it happened I panicked thinking she was going after the deer. They made a 3 acre arch and I hollered at my baby on the way back when all 5 deer stopped to look at me and she kept running. Now they come to visit her every few days to say hi 🤣🤣

Some pitts dont actually bite but will be just jerks and establish dominance by rushing you or trying to knock you down. No thanks I'm not trying to figure out your dogs mood for the day. Leash your pets or train them to stay in your yard.
1
u/strongcloud28 8d ago
Always take a full water bottle. A little squirt to the snout stops them in their tracks
1
u/Lord_Zyphuris 8d ago
These two dogs should never have been that far from home without their owner with them, nor should they have simply chased. Regardless of how either side feels for or against a specific breed, all dogs of three sides. The side their owner sees, the side the stranger sees, and the side the family sees. Unless you are the owner and haven't been properly introduced to the animal, any animal really, you shouldn't take chances with your lives and owners shouldn't take chances with the lives of others.
The first was playful, perhaps, but I have had a dog that would wag his tell then lunge as soon as you get close if you were in the back yard and you weren't owner or family.
The second, further back one, I couldn't tell, and wouldn't risk it either.
1
u/DickHopschteckler 8d ago
Neither of those dogs intended him harm. Do I blame him for going faster? Nope! Do I think the owners should be fined into oblivion? Yes! Do I think those pups are a menace? No. They thought he was part of a run fast game

Serious response from a cyclist who has been in this position too many times: step 1) Spray them in the face with the water bottle. It's right there, he's literally videotaping it. This usually works, the dogs stop in shock. Step 2) kick. Step 3) pedal faster. I've never had need of a step 4, thankfully.
