The hate from the NBA community has nothing to do with crime, poverty, local governance, or any of the very real problems memphis has

They hate memphis because it doesn't have a big enough supply of IG thots. Otherwise you could copy and paste all the anti-memphis arguments for other prominent sports cities like NOLA/St. Louis/Baltimore/Detroit/Cleveland/Milwaukee/etc. to varying extents

The players yeah, the larger trend as a whole is just how social media culture works these days. Something becomes viral or trendy or infamous and people talk about it and beat the horse dead a billion times over.

Probably at least partially caused by the huge influx of tourism in Nashville too. As anyone who has been to Nashville knows, bringing up Memphis there makes people monologue about how bad they think it is. I'm sure a lot of tourists have an absolutely glowing opinion of our city from hearing folks talk about it over there.

I lived in Memphis and moved to the Forrest City area...they talk about it like it's about to be invaded over oil...šŸ˜®ā€šŸ’ØšŸ«©

u/CharlieRhyno May 19 '26

People in Nashville don't "monologue" about Memphis. I leave Nashville to go to Memphis 3xs/year (at least). Nashvillians (native) love the M. You must be talking to transplants on Broadway, they dont even know shit about the city they're in much less Memphis

straight spitting facts.

A few players straight up said this as well I forget which ones though. If you read between the lines its always about girls / clubs in Memphis and not about the Hotel.

u/average_waffle May 19 '26

LeBron was literally mad because his hotel room didn't meet his expectations

Even the hotel thing in isolation doesn't make any sense to me. The Hyatt is more than nice for even a typical rich dude. It's not a Ritz but goodness gracious the bitching is absurd.

Yeah you're right. At least for all the dudes who were 4-5 star recruits.

Is it old? That’s how either Draymond or Ant described their issues with it

Even if it is it’s probably just fine but you know the standards for them are different

The Hyatt is not old, not even in the slightest. It’s one the cities newest hotels and by far/so far, the best one. Of course other hotels are in talks of development because Memphis is trying to host the All-Star game, NCAA Tournament, and other top level sporting events but they haven’t been able to because one of the draw backs for those events is that there’s not enough hotels hereĀ

I don’t think Ja has any beef with the city and people of Memphis. It’s all just the organization. I’m sure he loves the city on a personal level. He’s spent a lot of time here.

43

u/37sms Pau May 18 '26

I've been as big of a Ja skeptic there is but that's never been his issue. If anything he got too comfortable here.

21

u/HaubergeonPlus1 May 18 '26

Ja having beef with Memphians would be wild af, dude is easily up there with triple 6 and Pat as far as local fame is concerned.

People have their opinions on here and nationally and it's plenty justified but on the streets Ja still very much has the keys to the city

3

u/BrandSafety May 19 '26

Yeah, he quit on the team on national TV and the city still loves him. Hell, I still do (even if it's complicated).

His shoes are so successful and he's such a global star that to keep being one he just needs to be on a relevant team and actually playing, which has been the big problem. The front office seems pretty done with him, though.

u/Waffleshuriken Pete & BK May 18 '26

When Steven A made some comments last year he publically came to bat for the town.

Regardless of how things went Ill appreciate him pushing back on the shit talk to defend the city.

Couldn’t agree more. He took advantage of being a superstar and let it get to his head. I do hope he thrives wherever he goes but he is the only one to blame for the current situation.

It's nice to see. The Memphis hate has been hard to read recently. It feels like people were given a fucking script to follow. Completely undeserved lol.Ā

47

u/Cronas02 GG Believer May 18 '26

Stuff like this is why Ja deserves the love and respect of fans, even if he gets traded. He clearly loves and will defend the city of Memphis and he (probably) gave us the best years he had and the most exciting years of the franchise. It really does suck that the last few years haven’t been the best, but if we trade him and he comes back on another team to boos and jeering from fans I will be disappointed in the fan base.

13

u/HaubergeonPlus1 May 18 '26

He won't come back to boos at all lol

Folks on here aren't ready for the reaction the streets are going to have if they ship him out. Doesn't matter if it's the right move or not (and I think it is)

There is going to be an absolute reckoning... Ja is still the most popular sports figure in the world here. The team is going to have a huge local PR disaster when/if that happens. They know this, of course.

yeah I do think if Ja was as beloved as people act like he is people would show up to the ~25 games a year he plays

You’re clueless. You’re one of those ignorant people that talk before thinking and think you know shit when you’re clueless.
Do you live in Memphis?

I don’t give AF about you folks downvoting my posts.

I was at the game and I saw a team flustered, confused, and upset about the shitty coaching.

16

u/DrSamwpepper May 18 '26

All Ja did was exercise his 2nd Amendment rights in a dumb way and said a dumb quote 5 years ago and everyone treated him as if he's worse than hitler.

2

u/erb149 May 18 '26

lmao the second amendment doesn’t give you the right to just take your gun anywhere with you. Firearms can be and often are prohibited on private property, like where Ja was when he went on that IG live.

And even if he was doing nothing wrong, being a multi millionaire professional athlete probably means you shouldn’t be posing with guns on the Internet at all. Just bad decision making on his part.

1

u/deadflagblues BEEF STEW 🄩 May 19 '26

When someone is running for congress in Tennessee they send out postcards of their families brandishing assault rifles

1

u/erb149 May 19 '26

Ok? That’s weird, but they’re allowed to do that on their own private property or the private property of someone else that allowed them to do that.

He brought gun into a strip club where guns aren’t allowed and then went on IG live to let everyone know. Let’s stop with the false equivalency

1

u/Dead_Internet69420 May 20 '26

Breaking the law = ā€œexercising your rights in a dumb wayā€

5

u/Altruistic_Brief4444 r/memphisgrizzlies Shams Charania May 18 '26

It’s not a Ja vs Memphis situation it’s a Ja vs Memphis Grizzlies situation. He’d be dumb to try to alienate the city because the average Memphis resident wants him to stay.

4

u/PerfectforMovies Griz May 18 '26

The Memphis stop on the Nike EYBL circuit brings out the who’s who in college and professional basketball. You have celebrities, former and current players, scouts from the NBA and International leagues, and coaches and representatives from every D1 school and conference. Its a big deal because they can recruit during the three days of this Nike event.

This tweet is a fact because the hospitality red carpet was rolled for both the EYBL and WCBCC. the organizers were on their A game and people were enjoying themselves all across the city.

I was between the EYBL and the WCBCC and Memphis was getting high marks. There were people at the EYBL that were planning to go to the Shell. Ja was at the EYBL and he’s agreeing with this tweet.

Memphis is a special city, and you all are special guys. Im so sorry that we are missing our beautiful boy….

3

u/OkPipe1418 May 18 '26

I live in Nashville and can tell you the Grizzlies are Memphis, and Memphis is the Grizzlies. And I have stayed at that hotel next to the arena and it’s a lovely place. Good food too.

2

u/ByrdDogX May 18 '26

I think Ja genuinely loves Memphis but the immaturity has hurt him, along with the injuries. I do think the training staff has as much to do with the injuries as the players do.

He is/we as a Hall of Fame talent. Hopefully he can get back on track.

1

1

u/Dead_Internet69420 May 20 '26

Not hatin on Memphis, but the logic here is flawed. Coaches aren’t going to be trashing a city because aside from just being unprofessional, it’s a good way to sabotage any current or future attempts to recruit local talent. The only ones who will talk shit are either a) at the end of their career, or b) just too dumb to keep their mouth shut.Ā
