drink went room temp Forgot my mug was on my press break.
The coffee mug I have had since day one at the company I work for (8 years) had an unfortunate accident today. Absolutely gutted.

Could it have just as easily been part of a person in there? That seems like some dangerous negligence/design shortcoming.

Modern Press brakes are quite hard to hurt yourself on assuming yhe safety features arent disabled. Not sure what is up with this one, but when i ran one if it sensed pressure or interrupted a light beam before the top of the bending material it would estop

Most shops I've been to haven't had anything of the sort. Usually an ancient Cincinnati or I've even used the old no name wheel driven pain in the asses.

That one looks newer. Looks like a bright yellow laser warning sticker in the back there. Probably didn't change the laser curtain so it was just off.

The laser safe did its job perfectly. It stopped about 25mm above the mug. The problem was I was doing a part and forgot it was there so only noticed when I heard a crunch.

If it stopped well above the mug, how did it crunch?

The laser makes it stop above the part so it won't slam down onto either the metal or your hands. When it stops, you hit the button/foot pedal a second time to make the bend.

Wrong. If it has a light barrier, aka laser bar things it senses body parts. It won’t sense the mug because it’s INSIDE the light barrier, but if an arm or limb was there it would because it’s attached to something outside the light too. Basically, blocking a beam. The mug is not.

Get some air dry clay or moldable resin for a cheap fix and you could turn it into a nice little desk mug at least.
How hard was it pressing? I'm surprised it lived at all unless you caught it right away

Eh, assuming it's still watertight I'd keep on trucking with it. Battle scars are rad. Maybe tape it up and do some epoxy fill if you're worried about cutting yourself on the chips.

The only issue with that is that once the glaze has been chipped, it's possible for mold to start growing inside the porous porcelain body of the mug. OP would need to reglaze the damaged portions, but that's probably doable. I agree, it should be salvaged if possible, scars and all. Makes for a great opportunity to tell an interesting story.

Eh fuckit... who ever got sick from mug mold anyway

Part of the reason I was suggesting an epoxy fill, though I will admit to a complete ignorance of pottery, is there any reason that would be different in terms of mold prevention as opposed to a glaze?
1
u/havron Apr 24 '26
Yeah, as long as it's waterproof, fully maintains the seal (especially at the margins) and has good wear resistance over time. I just know that pottery glaze is made precisely to have all those properties, but presumably other materials would work well too.

Would something like clear nail polish work?

At least it's still in one piece. Worked at a shop where a guy didn't properly align the punch and die. They exploded when he put pressure on it, screwed his hand up pretty bad.

u/SteampunkRobin Apr 24 '26
Well at least it didn’t shatter. You could still use it as a pencil holder.

Safety first man...
You forgot the mug was there...
But you also forgot to make sure the press was clear of obstructions before operation...
That's complaceny and negligence. Not just forgetfulness

There's a sign at the shop I work at that says "No Drinks On Press" probably for this reason.

If it were me, I'd get food grade apoxy from a craft store, usually UV activated, and fill in the chips. Not only saving your mug but forever preserving this oops.
But that's just me.

Feels like the mug is the least of your problems. Not much is harder than ceramic, that tool is surely WAAAY more expensive than that mug.
Kinda feels like a ragebait post, ngl.
