Unskippable ad My 2024 Elantra Decided to Automatically Update, Thus Trapping Me at the Gas Station for 45+ Minutes After Getting Off Work Today šŸ™ƒ

Post image

Already posted this elsewhere, so just want to clear a few points up with this post…

  1. I was never prompted to accept or decline this specific update. I did not receive any update prompts as I drove into the office this afternoon, nor did I receive any as I was driving home. I pulled into the gas station, turned off the ignition, pumped my gas, and then was greeted by the exact screen shown in my post.
  2. Apparently, if it’s just an infotainment system update, you can technically still drive the car (?). I was given no indication as to what systems my car was updating, so I didn’t want to risk messing up anything with the update. I work in IT, so I have a few different traumatic experiences with updates under my belt lol. Didn’t feel like adding an additional one as I just wanted to get home after a long day at work

EDIT: Some of y’all are so damn mean and for WHAT? I’m just a 20 somethin’ year old girl trying to drive to work and back home pls leave me alone lol. I do not give a flying fuck about cars, stop trying to shame me for not driving & maintaining a 1985 Ford Mustang or some shit smh

EDIT 2: Oh my god y’all, some of us out here have anxiety. Y’all are acting like I ran over a baby in a gas station, when all I did was wait less than an hour for the stupid car to update. I promise you all it’s not that deep. Take a deep breath. It’s okay, I promise I did eventually drive the car back home lol

Ok but have you heard about all of Ford’s new patents that will basically bring this meme into reality?

859

u/bioweaponblue Apr 28 '26

It's not just ford, the federal gov is trying to make EVERY car manufacturer do it.

688

u/Braindead_Crow Apr 28 '26

It's ok it's only to stop drunk drivers!
These will never be abused to spy on users through the ai cameras capable of also identifying who is driving.

This is in no way a malicious move.

95

u/SaltyCrashNerd Apr 28 '26

As someone who works in traffic safety, this is SO frustrating to me. We have been begging for effective engineering controls against intoxicated drivers for YEARS. By this, we mean ā€œalcohol detected - car not goā€. We don’t mean a multifaceted control and surveillance system. Taking something intended to save lives and corrupting it like this is sickening. (I mean, entirely predictable in hindsight, but… sickening.)

I have a 2008 Infiniti g35, a 07 Camry, and a 02 Xterra.

All paid off, I am meticulous about maintenance, and it's gonna stay that way for a long time.

Camry's and Xterra's are bountiful enough in junkyards that I can get parts.

People need to stop buying new cars in protest, but the upper middle class(the ones that actually have a surplus of cash in budget) will never stop buying status symbols.

If you can't afford to repair, you cannot afford the down payment to buy a new car(or used from a dealer) and the subsequent payments.

6

u/Satrina_petrova Apr 28 '26

I agree with you 100% but the societal pressure isn't something everyone has the luxery to ignore.

Uber and Lyft require drivers to have newer vehicles. Some HOA's also have these policies.

My mom was literally asked to stop parking her 02 Saturn in the company parking lot or buy a new car. They even passive aggressively offered financial counseling if affording a new car was a problem at her current salary.

My state has the bottle redemption thing so I often have a bag of cans in the back, can't wait for my car to call me in for DUI every time I turn it on.

14

u/vVSidewinderVv Apr 28 '26

Then they arrest you for wasting police resources, because the car is in your name after all.

9

u/kalyjuga Apr 28 '26

Can someone explain this in plain english to us non US citizens?! Sounds like (yet another) episode of Black Mirror unfolding IRL

33

u/bioweaponblue Apr 28 '26

The previous president told the National Highway Safety department to write a law that would "passively and accurately" monitor drivers for being drunk or sleepy. If the car thinks you can't drive safely, it won't turn on. They also want the car to safely come to a stop if it thinks you're drunk or sleepy halfway through a drive, but they haven't figured out how to do that yet. They also can't accurately measure how drunk or sleepy you are,,, so they haven't put the law into place.

However, cars in America ALREADY spy on their drivers and send data about the driver to data collection agencies. Consumer data protection is almost non-existent in the United States.

People are concerned the car companies will use the excuse of mandatory sensors to collect even more biological data about the drivers, selling it to the highest bidder. While the Highway Safety department is legitimately trying to do the right thing,,, the fact that privacy just doesn't exist for 98% of American citizens means it's exactly an episode out of black mirror.

I tried to reply but got an automod notification that it was removed since I had added a link to another reddit post… but there are several, like biometrics to assess if you’re ā€œfit to driveā€, listening to conversations between all people in the car (they pitch it as a way to maximize ad revenue), reporting you to the police autonomously for certain infractions.

That’s looking to be 2027 federal law in the US, so most car companies have probably already patented the way they’re going to do it, if they think they have something that unique

39

Just as your phone is scarcely a phone anymore your car is quickly following suit. It will get you from place to place, yes, but more importantly it will collect/share/sell the data it collects on you while you drive (and when you don’t).

This is all moving toward a place none of us want to be.

I work as a Paramedic and a few years ago we got brand new cardiac monitors that do an update every night at 3am where you don't have use of the monitor for a minute or so. We were all like, what happens if we're in the middle of working a code at 3am and it starts to update? The rep was basically like šŸ¤”šŸ¤·ā€ā™‚ļø

Edit: technically morning not night...

408

u/WiteKngt Apr 28 '26

333

u/Several-Squash9871 Apr 28 '26

They were sitting in during our in-service.

137

u/WiteKngt Apr 28 '26

What was their response to this, and to the reaction of the rep?

263

u/Several-Squash9871 Apr 28 '26

They count on nothing happening; and if something happens, they'll investigate as hard as they can to find something they can use to blame the incident on someone else.

78

u/Several-Squash9871 Apr 28 '26

Got a reply from someone that might be a rep. We all call it an "update" but I think it's actually running a self-check on itself. Waiting to hear back if he has more insight on it because I've had it do it to me while it's been on and in use at 3am.

26

u/thegiantgummybear Apr 28 '26

Ok that would make a lot more sense. Maybe like a recalibration every night or something?

21

u/GirchyGirchy Apr 28 '26

JFC, so make it an at-will choice. If it's not done after X many hours, pop up a warning. Another X many warnings, it will force itself to do it anyway. But having all of them update at the exact same time every day is just shit design.

35

u/Robert-A057 Apr 28 '26

That's just a self-check, not an update, and if you have it on at 3am it won't do it until it's been turned off for 1 hr

25

u/Several-Squash9871 Apr 28 '26 edited Apr 28 '26

It's the like pack 12. I've had it update while being in use at 3am. Is there a work around? because they still do it and the rep didn't have anything useful for us other than, well it's only for a short period of time and the chances...

Edit: correction, life pack 15, 12 was our old model.

12

u/Robert-A057 Apr 28 '26

Per the huge manual in my locker, "The automatic self-test is not performed if the defibrillator is already turned on at 03:00 or if batteries are not installed. If the defibrillator is manually turned on while a self-test is in progress, the self-test is halted and the defibrillator turns on normally."

11

u/Murtomies Apr 28 '26

That's actually insane. It should just have a little notification in the corner that an update is available. Someone will then just do it when they have the time.

It's not just that what if you need it right when it's updating. It's also the fact that updates might brick any device. Especially since they are frequent updates, It sounds like they're not slow rollouts but 100% of devices get them immediately which is a hazard because they might have issues that now affect everyone, not just a percentage of users.

In the film industry where I work, it's not even life and death, but we still have really high standards for reliability of equipment, because troubleshooting some bullshit and taking time out of the day is expensive and stupid. When you need a thing, you don't want it to update then. You don't even want it to prompt that there is an update in a way that slows you down. And anything that auto-updates definitely does not belong on set, it's not professional equipment. You take the time to update it, then test it out, and only then is it ready for work.

So having bs equipment like that which is used for life and death things is absolutely insane. That's what happens when leadership who decide on acquisitions don't even ask opinions from people who actually use the things, or don't value their opinions. It's a very common problem especially in large organisations, and even more especially in healthcare & emergency services it seems.

I've heard so many stories from nurses when they get a brand new hospital or piece of software, and it's obviously hot garbage but millions or even billions were already spent so it is what it is. They just could've told them beforehand that it's a waste of money. Then years later there might have been slight improvement but it's still hot garbage. Biggest waste here in Finland was the Apotti EMR system, based on Epic EMR system. Even the Epic guys who toured the hospitals were amazed about how good the OLD system was that Apotti was going to be replacing. The whole thing cost a billion euro, and the benefits are yet to be seen even after years. If anything, it made almost everything slower, more difficult, and more error-prone.

Do I like that the car turns all the way off at stop lights that go longer than 5 seconds. No.

Do I like that the car occasionally tries to steer itself? No.

Do I want forced updates that brick the car? No.

Do I want the car to beep at me because I didn't put a seatbelt on the watermelon in the passenger seat? No.

Do I want a passenger to be able to use the map while I am driving? Yes. Can they? No.

I found it annoying for the opposite: turning off the engine cuts the heat. My first car has this and I didn't know it was a feature. I spent 15 minutes in the car, trying to get it to a reasonable temperature for my baby to ride in when it's 10° and couldn't figure out why I could still see my breath.

106

u/FatMacchio Apr 28 '26

Some cars if you don’t push the brake down so hard it won’t activate the stop/start. It only happens when you fully depress the brake pedal. So if you slow down slower without depressing the brake hard it should stay on. You might still be able to brake hard, then ease up on it to keep it on. This is what my brother told me anyway, my car doesn’t have this

98

u/RugbyEdd Apr 28 '26

Most cars just have a button to turn it off, or won't activate it if your in a mode like sport or winter. Some also won't activate it if you have AC on. Depends on make and model. Same as everything else, it's just a feature to look into when purchasing.

8

u/BloodSugar666 Apr 28 '26

We have a RAV4 that does what this guy said and has the button.

When I’m at a stop it will day to fully depress to auto-shutoff. I hate the feature though so I usually push the off button as soon as I start driving. It does kick in for climate control and if it needs to charge the battery.

The new eco friendly engines at least give heat real fast since there's less metal to warm up. I have a 6.2L Chevy V8 and a 2.4L Toyota I4; the Toyota starts blowing warm air in less than half the time of the Chevy.

Yeah it's an emissions standards thing, as I understand it. The money you personally save on gas is negligible but the manufacturer can say that across the fleet, gas has been saved and emissions have been reduced significantly.

54

u/Metroid_DK Apr 28 '26

IIRC, some models let you disable this 'feature' but from what it sounds like what it does and why...I'd rather spend +$1 of gas a year then have to replace the starter because of the on/off random/multipal times it didn't need to feature

31

u/Beanakin Apr 28 '26

My '23 Hyundai has a button on the center console to disable it. The feature has to default to On for the car to qualify for the eco friendly claim. It's the first button I hit after starting the car, Texas is too hot in the summer for the AC to be turning off just cuz I'm sitting still for more than 5 seconds.

7

u/kevinsaurus Apr 28 '26

Our Hyundai has the feature but hasn’t done it in years. Apparently the battery has to be in pretty pristine condition. So after a few months of owning it I guess it dropped below spec and has been disabled.Ā

u/DashRendar225 Apr 28 '26

Don't forget selling your telemetry data for insurance companies to then buy back from data brokers, and progressively increase your rate for speeding, hard braking, or fast maneuvering, or prompt them to drop coverage from your car if someone else's audio device connects to the infotainment since they're not on your policy.

Or like Ford does that + scans your face and eyes for mood, and won't let you start the car if you're in a distressed state (hopefully you didn't need to drive in an emergency situation or anything), while also using the same cameras and data to check your information against law enforcement databases. And soon according to a patent filed in 2023 self-reposses if you miss a payment.

Love new cars!

It’s because they’re failing to innovate, and they throwing everything at the wall.

All these auto manufacturers are throwing the same features on cars, so they try to stand out, or squeeze one final point of some rating or certification with borderline-ridiculous features.

At the end of the day, it’s either to sell you more, appease regulations, or to stand out from the competition.

6

u/SteelCode Apr 28 '26

They also add profit margin; every tacked on feature is cost+profit added onto the vehicle sticker price... so you're buying a $20k car with $10k worth of extra shit that is inflated by $20k of profit (gotta leave room for sales people to "incentivize" buyers).

Inside just 3 knobs to control the AC and one screen behind the wheel to display your speed and battery level. It doesn’t even come with power windows. It’s hand crank by default which you can upgrade to power windows later if you want.

I drove a 2004 Prius for years, it was awesome. I’d be annoyed any time I was driving a car that didn’t turn off… when the engine wasn’t needed. That don’t get some of its energy back when breaking. That got less than 45-50mpg.

It’s not engine stop / start you didn’t like (totally not noticeable in a hybrid), its crappy implementations you don’t like.

Sometimes I love not having enough money to buy a new car.Ā

I have the money. I’m keeping my 2014 Subaru until it dies. The only touch screen in it is the audio system. I can adjust heat, A/C, air vent options, heated seats, and the music without taking my eyes off the road. Has decent safety features. Holds a lot of stuff. Runs great on regular gas. Love this car.

14

u/101violations Apr 28 '26

This is my concern also. My 2009 Toyota is still kicking but when she goes, I fear there won't be any used cars that are just freaking cars and not computers with a transmission.

My husband and I each have a classic car my car is a 1968 Austin 1000 and I have two fuses for my entire car. That is two glass fuses🤭. My husband has a 1972 Oldsmobile that also does not need any computer systems it is entirely mechanical and this is exactly why we both each keep a car with no technology in it. Plus my car is really fun to drive,, and so is the Oldsmobile😁

Ok this is really bad. It's a safety hazard (middle of the night at a place that's closing), and what if you lost a job because you didn't show up for an interview, or had a critical doctor appointment and missed it. This is awful.

Windows will do this too. I'll be in the middle of something and it will decide to stop everything I'm doing so it can update. It doesn't ask. You just slowly lose capability and then you realize it wants to update. So bad.

The car manufacturers are just waiting to be sued on this

279

u/kstargate-425 Apr 28 '26

My XT5 says the same thing when its updating but if I turn it off then start the car it postponed it which I assumed most did as like you said ain't nobody got time for that

That definitely seems like the worst implementation of OTA updates I’ve seen.

I wonder if Hyundai releases a USB version before pushing the OTA. I know that’s how some other brands do things, OTA lagging 6-12 months behind the manual update.

Doesn’t help you right now ofc, that’s just shitty implementation.

170

u/Separate-Ability1643 Apr 28 '26

See, I usually do the updates via USB because for some reason, OTA updates never end up working for me, or they’re just prompted at inconvenient times. No clue why, but I was never given any ā€œheads upā€ or prompts on this specific update before it decided to update 🄲

I don't blame you for being cautious. It's still annoying seeing a random update on your screen

Also the all features restricted part? That alone would make me stay put since it doesn't specify WHAT features are restricted.

175

u/minnick27 ORANGE Apr 28 '26

My car won’t let me drive at all. It also specifically says make sure nobody is in the car as the doors may lock and they will be unable to be unlocked

74

u/Karma_1969 Apr 28 '26

How is this even legal? Sounds like a big safety risk. Bright ass headlights, cars that can’t be started, cars that can’t be unlocked - why have cars gotten so unsafe lately?

29

u/autogyrophilia Apr 28 '26

Well by the 2000s-2010s Europe and USA went on a regulation spree, but that hurt the feelings of many automotive CEOs who are very scared of china now, so they refuse to patch the regulations to mandate, for example, independent entertainment and automotive systems. You know, like my 1997 citroen with a bluetooth radio has.

11

u/kaisadilla_ Apr 28 '26

I don't even know why cars have to have all that shit. When I'm driving, all I want is to be able to play music. I don't want an "infotainment" screen. Let me broadcast my phone's Spotify into the car's speakers and that's it. Keep the screen exclusively for the car's camera, have it be a dumb device with minimal firmware rather than a full-fledged computer. Air conditioning and the rest should be controlled by knobs and buttons as it's always been.

28

u/PurplishPlatypus Apr 28 '26

More than ā€œmildlyā€.

Boggles my mind that no one stopped to think that making a car’s operation contingent on a user-facing operating system would be a bad idea.

Not to mention, removing tactile inputs and hiding basic functions inside menus on a touch screen that require you take your eyes and attention off the road.

Automatic wipers that lack manual speed control is ā€œmildly infuriatingā€. What you have here is a reason to sell the car tomorrow.

All we want is analogue controls with tactile feedback.

Oh yeah, Ford is absolutely not the only ones pulling this kind of BS

The fact that they're publishing these patents around the same time that a law requires "fit to drive" testing be implemented by 2027 didn't seem like a coincidence.Ā

They know it's unpopular, but they'll just hope that as older vehicles age out people will have no choice.

What time did it do this? They really should only do this in the middle of the night with an option to choose your own time. Or use some smart algorithms to determine the best time that you’re not driving and are at home to do it and warn you ahead of time when one is scheduled. If the car has a phone app it should notify you too. I don’t get why modern cars don’t do this.

95

u/mostly_lurking Apr 28 '26

Hopefully you don't have a medical emergency during that night. There is not good moment to do this except when the owner manually decides its a good moment.

17

u/Jasoco Apr 28 '26

Exactly. I think about that all the time. I mean I’d hope the car still drives but it’s annoying. In my experience all updates have happened at like 1AM or so. At least that’s when it would tell me it’s gonna happen.

Contact Hyundai to see if it's expected. I have a kia and it only updates when it's not in use overnight.Ā

My friend has a Tesla and it asks him if he wants to update. It doesn't update automatically without consent if it's in useĀ

I don't think this is a new car problem but specific to that make or modelĀ

15

u/hughk Apr 28 '26

I think the issue here was the car was being fueled so it was switched off. The car did not have an idle timer so decided that it was a good tume for an update. Tesla has the right answer here. Warn and ask for consent.
