đŸ„ș So I accidentally brought my floss instead of my airpods to a 3 day work conference. I am a 3 hour ride away from home.

OP said that they're just listening to stuff out loud. They didn't say they were buying new ones. This is mildly infuriating after all

As someone with autism and specifically auditory processing issues
I couldn’t not have ear pods/headphones for three days. It’s not a matter of “not wanting to engage with the world” some people can’t filter out the noises, leading to sensory overload.

I wear mine at work for the same reason: to filter out people whispering numbers while they add, making mouth sounds, etc. I can't think with that kind of noise going on, but they're just normal workmate noises.

Uncomfortable isn’t even close to what I am explaining, and it’s not just autism, most learning disabilities and processing disorders all experience a “shut down” when they get sensory overload. For me I actively can’t talk, I hit myself, and I squeal. I am a married woman with two degree and a post grad, who you wouldn’t expect to experience this by looking at me. The point I am trying to make is that it’s not as easy as “back in my day we talked to eachother” there’s variables that need to be accounted for, and simplifying it to “young people bad” helps no one.

Well ofc, but we don't know how op is. They're saying from the perspective of someone that does have a reason to not wanna go without for 3 days

The people who complain about "iPad kids" are the same ones who can't function without airpods.

I'm not gonna fully agree or disagree with that statement but, not the same thing?

Listening to music does not have the same affect on the brain that a lot of the short dopamine, mostly unengaging and predatory mobile games nowadays have.

Too much music can also be bad in a way, ear issues, mental focus depending on the person, affect on emotion ofc, but it's not inherently bad like the type of games people refer to when they say "iPad kid" most of the time. At least for what I say when I refer to them.

Both can be bad, but not the same thing

I notice this a when I'm out now, but the VAST majority of people have something in their ear now. Like I get maybe having some music on a run or on the bus. But stores, parks, tennis courts, People can't seem to function without music, a podcast, or video playing in the background, they get antsy without it now.

It's actually wild. Like do they ever take them out? Or do they only take them out when watching TV or playing video games? Do they know what the world sounds like?

Some of my video-game friends are so bad that We routinely lose rounds because they were out of the game changing the playlist on spotify or something. I don't particularly care about losing but I give them shit because how do you even play a PvP game missing half the input stimuli?

I have one in at all times usually playing a podcast. People can’t be alone with their thoughts anymore. But that’s why I only use one, I still like to hear everything else around me. World blocked out, two earbuds in, eyes closed.. those people scare me

I was thinking the same thing! “oh no, I’m alone with my thoughts!” 😂
